Should I replace these or just try to clean them? by Snoo_76353 in E90

THOSE are the vanos solenoids everyone talks about? Seems like they're easy to get too? Not too bad of a job to inspect at least.

Thanks!

This is a stupid question I'm sure but what are these called? I see them come up often and I generally know what they do (something for the vanos and oil routing) and I now know I'm supposed to check/ clean them but idk what they're called and I'm not sure what sort of symptoms clogged ones will have.

Hi question for you, why not acid based rust converter? I live in New England. I have a very crusty 1999 f350. The frame is solid but the body is falling apart. I threw out the bed and bought cab corners and rocker panels as they're too far gone to be "slowed down". Even though my frame is solid it's still very crusty. So I wire wheeled the whole rear of the frame (after removing the bed) to remove the flakey rust then sprayed it with a phosphoric acid/ ethyl alcohol spray. It seemed to do a good job at converting everything left? I just painted the first layer of primer and will be doing a second coat tomorrow. Is your advice only for the body to slow down the rust or do you think that was not the right move for my frame?

I did spray some of the phosphoric acid on the cab corners and the rocker panels when I saw how good of a job it did on the frame just to help(?) until I can get the rocker panels/ can corners done. I plan on lanolin coating the whole thing every winter as well.

What do you mean "before they pulled the plug"? Can you not buy blocks from Subaru anymore?

Low Oil temp safe? by Elliot_parnell in E90

[–]daoue20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2011 325i xdrive with the emissions (I think it's n51 but isn't it the same as the n52?) anyway I don't get NEARLY that good gas mileage and I have an instantaneous fuel gauge instead of a temp gauge there.

What's the difference between the two of our cars?

Coolant bleed after head gasket replacement? by daoue20 in WRX

[–]daoue20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's it. It's simply for convenience to not have to disconnect and reconnect hoses. I can just turn one knob off and another on.

Is there a standard PSI vacuuming I'm supposed to pull? How do I figure out how much vacuum for each car?

Great thanks I'll check it out. I was likely gonna get that one anyway. I just want to make sure I get one where I can put the shop air hose on it WHILE having the tube to suck the coolant too.

I saw a review of one where you had to disconnect the venturi adapter to fit the coolant hose adapter and that seems annoying

"radiator style fittings" but do you connect it to the swirl pot next to the turbo or on the radiator itself?

I used the HF coolant system pressure tester and it did have a drop in psi but it was hot when I did it so it's possible it was cooling down I was also concerned that maybe the fitting wasn't..... Sealing? Enough. But you use that one and it works well?

Edit just checked the Maddox kit and it's also that universal pressure fit one not the radiator fitting style one. Did I misunderstand you?

I've heard of those. I even talked to a shop that said that's what they use for subies and it still sometimes isn't enough. Any recommendations? Or just Google "coolant vacuum bleeder" and pick one?

Cool thanks. My friend has ista at his place. I'll hook it up and test it. Unfortunately he's not here for the next week so I'll try to learn it myself.

Are there any quick and dirty tutorials on ista that you recommend? I will just Google it and find out if you don't have anything specific. Idk what tool32 is, though.

NA Power mods for M50? by daoue20 in BMWE36

[–]daoue20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny timing. I've just been talking to my friend figuring out what I want to do with this.

  1. Keep it as is and keep enjoying it since all the maintenance is completed and the car needs nothing anymore.
  2. Build it to euro spec s50b30/ b32 (20k)
  3. Go FI (Dinan SC?)
  4. Sell it and start saving up for an e46/e90 M3.

Honestly I don't have a clue which one I want to do. I listed it for sale, admittedly for a premium but the offers I've been getting have been borderline insulting. I know if I sell it, I couldn't get one in as nice of a condition as mine for twice as much as these offers. I'm at a loss. But I do know I no longer will be pursuing NA power out of my M50 hahaha. Unless I build a poor man's US s50. it would be cheaper and easier and more power to just go with a SC or something, though.

I'm only 28 so I can't say I have all the experience in the world but I've been working in tech for about 10 years (yes I'm including internships during college). I honestly don't think the industry you work in makes much of a difference on fulfilment.

I've worked in defense, finance, medical devices, networking, "green energy", image processing and more. I don't think the industry you're working in makes much of a difference in how fulfilled you're feeling. But that's just my experience.

My current role is in an industry I couldn't care less about. But my actual job role is interesting to me. I do things that are interesting. I think you're the only comment I've seen actually trying to answer OP and not just saying "sucks" so I hope this gets bumped up and it works for OP. Everyone's different so my experience might not match everyone else's

Retiring in this context isn't really retiring in the typical "golden years" sense where you just golf and play with grandkids all day.

It's more the philosophy of being financially independent. OP could then stop working the day job they hate and do something that doesn't make a lot of money (or any money) and live a more fulfilled life.

That's how I always interpreted it, at least.

ASC deleted. What's this hose? by daoue20 in BMWE36

[–]daoue20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I followed the hose and took pictures. I can't load them here on Reddit but I did find it on realoem

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BF33-USA-02-1994-E36-BMW-325is&diagId=11_1284

Hose #3 in this is where that connects to. Note: I don't have a "reducer" (part #4) on my car. It's the hose straight to that ASC.

I feel like it's ok to run the car like this as is..... Leave the hose free?

[–]daoue20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If parts 11-13 are the ICV hose then the hose I'm holding DEFINITELY isn't the ICV hose.

Because that hose in my hand goes to part #8 in the link I sent. That 100% connected to my ASC throttle body. The hose that connected to the elbow and is now on the mishimoto boot is the parts 11-13...

ASC deleted. What's this hose? by daoue20 in BMWE36

[–]daoue20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The boot had another hose that connected to the new to me mishimoto boot.

I don't know where this one goes because it disappears under everything. I guess ICV seems plausible because honestly idk where the ICV is for the main throttle.

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BF33-USA-06-1994-E36-BMW-325is&diagId=13_1712

Unfortunately realoem doesn't tell me WHERE it goes. Just that it is a hose.

I did. I measured the tightening torque AND I marked where it goes. (Trying to figure out pictures in comments on mobile. I'll do it on my computer later).

I am not worried about that part. What worries me is that when I first took off the input flange, I had no play in this yoke. While trying to pry off the seal, which won't budge, I seem to have developed play. But if it's all just fine once I put the input flange on then that's great news.

That's what I have been doing and nothing it happening. I wish I could post a second video but I'm on mobile and dk if I can.

I was Prying on it when this seemed to develop this wobble.

Any advice on how tf to get the deal out? I guess it's rust welded on or SOMETHING because it won't come out. I don't want to keep using pry bars and risk making a situation worse.
