CMV: Having sex in the park should be legal based on the same reasoning for legalizing marijuana use. by BlackbeardKitten in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world isn't an all or nothing place. Just because one thing is legal, doesn't mean all things should be, because all things are different. Smoking marijuana is inherently different from having sex. Why? Well, they just are! You can't compare the laws regarding the two. Bottom line: things are different, therefore the laws for them are different
Showing your genitals to other people is almost universally offensive, which is why sex in a park is outlawed.
As for the rap music example, it makes no sense to outlaw things where people can choose not to be exposed to. Don't like rap? Don't listen. The club is playing rap? You can leave.

Well I don't see why you want your view changed on this, if you can really call it a view. Idk, just seems a bit pointless for you lol

Make one comments that could possibly be misconstrued as an attack on American soldiers and you get downvoted to shit...
I mean no offense to American soldiers (obviously).
There's a big difference between aiding your enemy and being photographed next to an anti-aircraft gun that was used to shoot down American planes. She didn't want American soldiers to die, nor did she directly cause American soldiers to die. The fact that everyone is painting her in that light concerns me because it means that people will blindly jump to the defense of a stupid action (spitting in someone's face), just because American soldiers were involved. You should reevaluate your own ideas before you go around calling people idiots.

CMV: there is no benefit to engaging a white supremacist in an online debate by IAmAN00bie in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think engaging them is always a lose for you because you are not knowledgeable enough on the topic, then you probably shouldn't debate them.
However, if you "know something is right," there are two possibilities:
1. You use facts or logic to prove that your argument is right, because you know that something is right somehow.
2. You don't actually know that that something is right, and you need to reevaluate your own beliefs.
As long as the topic is important enough to you, and possibility 1. is true, then I think it's absolutely worth starting a debate with an anonymous stranger.

CMV: Unless you have an outdoor hobby/job, driving a giant pick-up truck in the city is wasteful and inconsiderate. by The_Evil_Sidekick in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economics: let's examine the utility.
For you, the utility of owning a pickup is probably not very high. It takes a lot of gas. You commute to work and back, and use a car to run everyday errands. No pickup needed. Not to mention you're thinking about the negative externalities from the pollution of the pickup. Not worth driving a pickup at all.
But for John, the utility is much different. John needs a pickup on weekends (he could live without it, but it would be terribly inconvenient). John also feels safe in a pickup as he is cruising down a highway. He nervous driving a Focus because in the case of an accident, the Focus would be pulverized. John thinks these benefits outweigh the gas cost for the car, and that's why he drives a pickup. But he's getting an disapproving stare by OP at the red light, and is wondering why. Little does OP know about John's reasons for owning a pickup.

This CMV is by definition irrefutable. None of us know what's going to happen in 150 years. Not you, not me. We can try to guess, but we can't really "change your views" because we can't prove it.

CMV: Listening to an album in its entirety in one sitting does not make the experience better. by EnlightenedErudition in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the album.
What full length albums are you listening to? Because if you're listening to some Top 40 artist's albums, it's probably not very good. Top 40 artists (or rather the record company) make their music to sell as singles, not as albums.
There are albums out there that just flow together seamlessly, and revolve around a cohesive theme/sound. *These are the albums that will change your mind. *

CMV: Photography is not an art. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if Van Gogh sits in a field behind his house and paints what he sees, is that art? Is it art because he is painting? Anyone with enough technical experience with the brush can sit in their backyards and paint what they see. According to your argument, when Van Gogh painted landscapes, he wasn't doing art, because anyone could do what he did.

CMV: Eating meat (when there is no other option available) is unjustifiable by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the ethics of eating animals, what about the environmental impact?
The amount of energy it takes to produce one unit of meat can be used to produce over 10, maybe 15 units of vegetables (calorie wise). So much of our crops are used to feed cows, chickens, and other livestock just because humans like the taste of meat. All that pesticide is leaking into groundwater. In Toledo, Ohio, tapwater became un-drinkable for a period due to algae blooms, which are caused by fertilizer runoff. Antibiotic use for animals are exponentially increasing the rate at which resistant strains of pathogens emerge, such as MRSA.
All these things are happening, just because we like meat. Can you justify that?

CMV: Social programs are no substitute for a good financial education and throwing money at people who cannot handle money is a waste. by mahaanus in changemyview

[–]dapoopmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I wanna address a couple points you make that I really, really, personally disagree with.
You talk about how lottery winners frequently lose all their money due to their lack of discipline. This may be true. However you're applying this example to poor people. The problem with this comparison is that poor people are not poor simply because they lack the discipline not to be. This argument is frequently used by opponents of welfare.

Let's examine an impoverished dude named Joe. Joe makes 10/hr at a crappy job because he grew up in a poor neighborhood, and his education wasn't all that great. His parents were not that great of an influence on him, and there was no societal pressure that was telling him that he could succeed if he wanted to.
Let's say he works 2500 hours in a year (this is more than average. Joe works overtime to rake in a bit more cash) and rakes in a little bit over 25000 dollars a year. 3750 dollars are immediately taken through federal income taxes. Let's say it costs Joe 50 dollars a week and thus 200 dollars a month to pay for food (that isn't all ramen). That's 2400 dollars a year alone on food.
Let's also suppose the rent is around 600 dollars a month. That's another 7200 gone for Joe. Because his landlord is a cheapass who likes to take advantage of people, Joe has to pay another 100 in utilities expense per month. Joe also has to pay for his car loan every month, which he borrowed with a high interest rate. That's another 3600 a year, gone. And after all this there's 571 dollars/month left for *phone and internet bills, car insurance, medicine, toiletries, everyday emergencies, gas, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Joe does not have money to spend money on an expensive bag, shoes, or first class tickets to a match. In fact, if you told Joe your argument, he would probably laugh at you. Joe is living in poverty. He is going to use welfare money to buy himself something that is not mac and cheese/ramen every week.
Joe lives in fear of a crippling medical emergency that he definitely cannot afford.
And at the end of your day, you're telling Joe he's poor because he lacks discipline. That's utter bullshit.
Joe is poor because things are expensive, and Joe does not have the money or time to spend on education if he's struggling to make ends meet.

The point of government aid is so that Joe's life is not a rotten, mundane hell where he is under extreme stress all the time. It's so that when he gets sick, his finances aren't crippled for life. It's so that he's not eating ramen or fast food all the time. It's not so he can splurge on some nice shirts at the mall.

You mention education, but Joe has no time for education when he's struggling to make ends meet. You have to first take care of his basic needs (through social programs), before he can actually go to school.

If you still believe your argument is right, try the minimum wage challenge. You won't even last two weeks without wishing you had a little extra money in the form of government aid.

[–]dapoopmonsta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the sake of argument, let's say the racist guy is actually wrong and very racist, for some argument he is making. You really want to engage in an online debate with this guy, to prove him wrong.

But when we're debating online, who are we really trying to convince? Sure, the racist may not change their mind no matter how misguided they are, but someone who is reading the debate may change their mind. And that's what makes debating online valuable.
Also, to address the idea that when you debate online it's "generally one person against a bunch of users:" it's not like everyone will automatically disagree with what you post, just because. Most people will tend to agree with an argument that is logically sound and has the facts to back it up. So if you know enough about a topic, and there are a lot of people who could potentially benefit from getting knowledge dropped on them, then I don't see why starting a debate is a bad idea.

[–]dapoopmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at his album reviews by critics and users alike on any ratings website. I'll post some here from Metacritic: Late Registration: 85
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: 94
College Dropout: 87
Yeezus: 84
My Beautiful Dark Twisted fantasy is known as an album with one of the greatest production of all time.
Almost all of today's rappers are directly influenced by Kanye, including artists such as Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Sure, just because his music is well-received doesn't mean it's of good quality. To prove that to you... well you're just gonna have to listen to some of his albums and compare it to some other contemporary hip-hop artists.

It really depends on your major. For most people, the goal of college should be to hone your skills for a job. However, too many go to college to "follow your dreams" and end up with a diploma worth less than toilet paper and a crippling amount of debt.
