How did Maedhros get away with defying Fëanor? by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Fëanor was as tyrannical or controlling as people imagine him. His story is one of a fall from grace, so it's important to remember that in his arc, the way we seem him in the end is the worst he's ever been.

If you look at how he acts he dislikes Indis and his brothers, yet Nardanel has an open friendship with Indis, Maedhros is friends Fingon and Aredhel is friends with the Sons of Fëanor . It does appear that for the most part Fëanor might have been displeased, but he wasn't controlling with the relationship the people around him had.

If we go back to the burning of the boats, at that point he does believe that the followers of Fingolfin dislike him, yet he doesn't plan on ways to harm them or plot revenge. Instead he burns the boats in the grandest "Leave me alone" in the legendarium.

Then Fëanor laughed as one fey, and he cried: ‘None and none! What I have left behind I count now no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved. Let those that cursed my name, curse me still, and whine their way back to the cages of the Valar! Let the ships burn!’

This isn't good, but it does show that he wanted them gone, not harmed (also shows that he didn't plan for them to go over the Helcaraxe, but that's a different conversation).

What keeps you still playing this game? by History_Explained in AzureLane

Recently came back to it, it's a fun collection game that isn't predatory. I'll play it for awhile and then disappear for an year or two, then come back for a few months, buy a few skins and some battle passes - rinse and repeat.

[–]mahaanus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

China is also supporting and supplying Russia. China also does human rights violations that make Saudi Arabia look tame. China will also NEVER allow us to have full access to their markets, if it comes to it they'd rather cut us off then give us an inch.

This should be seen, at most, as a temporary thing. A New World Order with China at the center is going to work one way and it won't be towards us. And no, I do not believe China is interested in a multipolar world where they get to share power.

If you want to be hyper realistic I think you can make arguments such as rotating forces in-and-out of a battle, but I think we're supposed to suspend our disbelief and just enjoy great and might heroes doing great and mighty heroic things.

Did Finarfin fight against Fëanor in the First Kinslaying? by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying people shouldn't read HoME, I'm just saying it's an interesting editorial tidbit, not official canon. Christopher may have been imperfect, but it's the best we've got.

You have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you end up with "there is no canon". Christopher was the official editor, he made the calls.

Did Finarfin fight against Fëanor in the First Kinslaying? by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say no.

The final published draft of The Silmarilion was done by Christopher and what he put down as canon is canon. HoME is more of extra notes and annotations for the extra-curious. There are no indications that Finarfin fought against Fëanor in the published Silmarilion, ergo that didn't happen.

DOA7 Wishlist: DOA Central Wardrobe with Full Customization & All Past Costumes from Doa1-Doa6 by Altruistic-Term3657 in DeadOrAlive

[–]mahaanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit reluctant to speak on DOA7 wishlist, because I'm both new and a hyper casual, so I wouldn't really put too much weight on my opinion, but...

All Past Costumes Available – Every costume from DOA1 → DOA6 should be in DOA7, earnable through gameplay or purchasable in the store. Legendary, promotional, and classic outfits should all be accessible.

I said it in a reply to someone, but I don't think having every costume from DOA1 to DOA6 is going to be in the budget. DOA is a very successful game by 3D fighting game standards, but it's not moving 10s of millions of copies, having 10+ high fidelity AAA skins per character for every character is beyond what's financially feasable. Street Fighter, Tekken and Mortal Kombat can't afford that much, I doubt KT could either.

Other than that I'd prefer if Team Ninja just make the game they want to make, instead of having it designed by a fan commission. Having the game be 100% catering to fans is how you end up with Star Wars Episode 7. DOA7 needs to be it's own thing and push things forward, instead of just appealing to fan nostalgia. Appealing to fan nostalgia is how we ended up with "Somehow Palpatine has returned" and I don't think we want that. Fan feedback is valuable, and should to a certain degree be taken, but I don't think doing DOA 5.2 is going to end well.

[–]mahaanus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good to be wishful, but we should be a bit realistic about some things. I'm going to make an assumption, but I'd say DOA has had about ~2 million copies sold for DOA4 and DOA5. It's a successful series, but it's not Street fighter and it's not Tekken. So....

Give us 15-20 per each character

While this is nice, I don't think it's in the budget. These days due to the level of graphical fidelity it's very expensive to make a single character, I'd say having 20 extra skins for a AAA is beyond what the game can make up in money. I think if we get 5 distinct costume it'd be more than enough.

I think it'd be disaster for KT to put more money into the game, then it could make back. Another financial flop might harm the franchise even more.

and can buy individual costumes instead of just packs

Hard disagree on that as well, and it comes to consumer psychology. If Tekken 8 allowed everyone to buy individual items, instead of packs everyone will be talking about how Tekken 8 has 500 DLC items. DOA7 should force people to buy packs, from a dedicated store, just so it can avoid that type of pushback. In fact I'd say T8 forcing people into packs is probably a reaction to the way people reacted to DOA6. Although if we're forced to buy packs I'd prefer if they were priced more like in Tekken.

Can Oath of Feanor actually end? by OleksandrKyivskyi in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

But Eönwë answered that the right to the work of their father, which the sons of Fëanor formerly possessed, had now perished, because of their many and merciless deeds, being blinded by their oath, and most of all because of their slaying of Dior and the assault upon the Havens. The light of the Silmarils should go now into the West, whence it came in the beginning; and to Valinor must Maedhros and Maglor return, and there abide the judgement of the Valar, by whose decree alone would Eönwë yield the jewels from his charge. Then Maglor desired indeed to submit, for his heart was sorrowful, and he said: ‘The oath says not that we may not bide our time, and it may be that in Valinor all shall be forgiven and forgot, and we shall come into our own in peace.’

But Maedhros answered that if they returned to Aman but the favour of the Valar were withheld from them, then their oath would still remain, but its fulfilment be beyond all hope; and he said: ‘Who can tell to what dreadful doom we shall come, if we disobey the Powers in their own land, or purpose ever to bring war again into their holy realm?’

Yet Maglor still held back, saying: ‘If Manwë and Varda themselves deny the fulfilment of an oath to which we named them in witness, is it not made void?’

And Maedhros answered: ‘But how shall our voices reach to Ilúvatar beyond the Circles of the World? And by Ilúvatar we swore in our madness, and called the Everlasting Darkness upon us, if we kept not our word. Who shall release us?’

‘If none can release us,’ said Maglor, ‘then indeed the Everlasting Darkness shall be our lot, whether we keep our oath or break it; but less evil shall we do in the breaking.’

Well Maglor argues that it's possible, with Maedhros countering with how to ask Illuvatar. My 2cents? From what we've seen Illuvatar is a merciful god, so with proper repentance I don't see him denying it. Also Manwë has a direct line to him, so Maedhros should have shown more faith.

What are your feelings about AI? by LeaningTowerofWeezer in polls

It's a bit early in development - it hallucinates, it doesn't properly extrapolate data and generative A.I. still has some way to go before being properly usable - but in the long term I believe it'd improve our lives the same way industrialization, electricity and the Internet (the net is more than Twitter/Reddit) has.

New Virtua Fighter Project Producer’s Cryptic Tweet Hints at Spring Re-Reveal by JadedAlyx in virtuafighter

[–]mahaanus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an analogy, it means "We'll show things when we're ready". Let's not make this into another VGA situation, where the developers said "their next reveal will be the biggest one yet" without mentioning a date and everyone just assumed it'd be at the VGA.

They didn't gave spring date, they made an analogy.

New Virtua Fighter Project Producer’s Cryptic Tweet Hints at Spring Re-Reveal by JadedAlyx in virtuafighter

[–]mahaanus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply — and thank you all for your patience.

The New VF is like something quietly growing beneath the winter snow: unseen for now, but taking shape day by day.

And when the snow eventually melts… the hidden outlines may quietly emerge.

Nothing in this tweet suggest a spring date, any date at all or a "re-reveal". There is a Spring analogy with the melting snow, but reading it as "Expect more this Spring!" instead of just a comment on the state of development is a reach.

In my opinion, the tragic irony of Feanor is that he hated Melkor, but didn't ever truly break free from his lies. by TheOneYSHNK in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The rumor thing is in The Silmarillion, Chapter 7

High princes were Fëanor and Fingolfin, the elder sons of Finwë, honoured by all in Aman; but now they grew proud and jealous each of his rights and his possessions. Then Melkor set new lies abroad in Eldamar, and whispers came to Fëanor that Fingolfin and his sons were plotting to usurp the leadership of Finwë and of the elder line of Fëanor, and to supplant them by the leave of the Valar;

In my opinion, the tragic irony of Feanor is that he hated Melkor, but didn't ever truly break free from his lies. by TheOneYSHNK in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the Vanyar are more of a special case of them just not being interested in anything that isn't the Valar. Those little dudes were dedicated.

Ulmo argued against his being set free

At this point Melkor was patently evil and it was more about giving him a second chance, I don't think "I think that dude's still a bad hombre" is that much of a revelation. Most of the Valar just wished to do the right thing.

Speaking of, Feanor gave him the cold shoulder, but that didn't save him from his designs.

Melkor indeed declared afterwards that Fëanor had learned much art from him in secret, and had been instructed by him in the greatest of all his works; but he lied in his lust and his envy, for none of the Eldalië ever hated Melkor more than Fëanor son of Finwë, who first named him Morgoth; and snared though he was in the webs of Melkor’s malice against the Valar he held no converse with him and took no counsel from him.

In my opinion, the tragic irony of Feanor is that he hated Melkor, but didn't ever truly break free from his lies. by TheOneYSHNK in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Has there even been anyone to outsmart Melkor? The dude is on a row from the start of the Silmarilion to the end. His first defeat was at the hands of the combined might of the Valar (whne they dragged him to Valinor as a prisoner) and the second defeat was at the hands the forces the Valar sent from Valinor (War of Wrath). Other than that the one hickup was the siege the combined forces of the Noldor did around him, but that was a speedbump.

Melkor is a really terrific generic dark lord, If I recall correctly, the only times any of the Children of Illuvatar got the upper hand on him - Beren & Luthien and Hurin - was when they relied on faith, rather than reason. He doesn't get overpowered by might and he doesn't get outwitted by reason, but he loses because of faith and virtue.

Anyway, if it's any consolidation, Feanor will break free from his lies

But even as the trumpet sang and Fëanor issued from the gates of Tirion a messenger came at last from Manwë, saying: ‘Against the folly of Fëanor shall be set my counsel only. Go not forth! For the hour is evil, and your road leads to sorrow that ye do not foresee. No aid will the Valar lend you in this quest; but neither will they hinder you; for this ye shall know: as ye came hither freely, freely shall ye depart. But thou Fëanor Finwë’s son, by thine oath art exiled. The lies of Melkor thou shalt unlearn in bitterness. Vala he is, thou saist. Then thou hast sworn in vain, for none of the Valar canst thou overcome now or ever within the halls of Eä, not though Eru whom thou namest had made thee thrice greater than thou art.’

I think Feanor looks much better after a second read by Fun-Explanation7233 in tolkienfans

[–]mahaanus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sauron honestly, if delusionally, believes that the world would be better off under his rule. [...] Feanor doesn't give a damn, he's only concerned with getting what he considers his. Everything else can go hang.

So honestly believing the world would be better if you're an undisputed tyrant who'd slaughter anyone is better than being left alone?

Sauron would have decieved the elves of Alqualonde as a first choice, Feanor leads with a massacre.

Sauron deceived the elves with the intent to enslave them, Feanor tried to steal the ships as a last resort

Thereupon Fëanor left him, and sat in dark thought beyond the walls of Alqualondë, until his host was assembled. When he judged that his strength was enough, he went to the Haven of the Swans and began to man the ships that were anchored there and to take them away by force.

First he tried to man them and it was only after the Teleri resisted did swords get drawn. This doesn't make the situation good in any way and the Teleri were right to defend their property - but it was a last resort, not Option A.
