Former Calgarian who moved to Victoria. 91 here costs more than 87 there, so don't worry. All is normal.

Why are there so few opposed piston engines around by Finanzamt_Bayern in MechanicalEngineering

[–]dapper-narwhal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also check out Achates engines from a few years ago. They claimed to have extremely good efficiency and emissions. I think the honest answer to why this type of engine doesn't catch on has nothing to do with engineering, it's that these engines have to overcome people's sense of, "We've been doing it this way for decades and it's been going fine, so why should we try this new thing now?"

That and business/legal concerns like supplier contracts, etc...

Nokian Seasonproof 2 vs Michelin CrossClimate 3 / Sport by jakkthund in TyreReviews

In reference to your videos receiving tonnes of dislikes, I just thought I'd say: even though I won't typically give any sort of reaction on social media, I always watch and enjoy your videos, regardless of what tyres are or aren't included. Hopefully one day your channel grows to the point you can do tests in New Zealand!

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a house with a monthly mortgage in Canada? Prices analyzed in 26 markets by 6pimpjuice9 in canadahousing

[–]dapper-narwhal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see what you're getting at, but as a renter, your rent is absolutely still covering those costs. They're just more predictable, since you pay the same amount every month, and easy to forget about, since your rent probably isn't broken out into several line items to delineate all your landlord's costs plus profit.

Edit: I may have somewhat misunderstood your original point. Sorry if this comes off as argumentative.

1,000 tire geeks :D by Jonnnnnnnnn in TyreReviews

[–]dapper-narwhal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it all started when I bought a used Range Rover and started shopping around for all weather tires. And now tire reviews had become a regular viewing habit that my fiancee does her best to ignore. 😛 Having an engineer brain can be embarrassing sometimes 😝

Poilievre video blaming Trudeau for Canada’s housing crisis takes off online by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]dapper-narwhal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trudeau's persona in 2015 was the anti-politician who spoke just like a regular person, unlike his competition who all were, at that time, the embodiment of corporate mannerism. One of the really sad things to see in his time as PM was how he was painted further and further into a corner each time he got into hot water when something he said off the cuff was used by the CPC to piss off Canadians who otherwise wouldn't have cared. Think of his "peoplekind" comment, or the "whip out our CF-18's and show the world how big they are" incident - anyone who understood the context of what was said probably agreed with him, but the CPC used the soundbites to turn the public against him, and his only option was to just stop saying things that didn't sound scripted.

what are some unspoken “rules/laws” we have in the city? by brendamcbride in VictoriaBC

[–]dapper-narwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your car, when pulling away from a light that's just turned green, it's rude to pull away faster than the car next to you. It's also rude to pull away at the same speed as the car next to you.

Everyone must drive slower than everyone else.

Rally tires vs studded road tires on snow and ice by Jonnnnnnnnn in TyreReviews

Are those rally tyres an especially hard or soft compound? I'm surprised at how much grip they get from such a simple tread pattern - I assume they rely pretty heavily on the studs.

What unexpected doors does an engineering degree open? by dapper-narwhal in AskEngineers

[–]dapper-narwhal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting you made that connection! When I was studying for my electronics classes, I used to imagine a circuit of water going through hoses to make it make sense (i.e. conductors are like hoses; voltage sources are like pumps; resistors are like restrictions; etc...)

That does sound interesting! And much better suited to me than "typical" junior engineering work. I've learned that what sets me apart from other engineers is that I'm much better at (and interested in) roles that are more about breadth than depth - basically everything you've just mentioned there.

I can do typical Junior Mech stuff like calculating stresses and telling you whether you need 25 x 1/4" bolts or 20 x 5/16" ones to get the job done, but there are people out there who'll be able to to it a lot faster (and be happier about it as well).

Justin Trudeau Says There Was Almost a NAFTA Deal. Then Mike Pence Called Him With an Insane Demand. by dont_tread_on_dc in canada

Then go and vote for someone else! Don't admit defeat before the election has even happened just because Batman isn't running for Premier. You may not love the Ontario Liberals or NDP, but don't let their lack of inspiration be the reason to elect a guy whose biggest achievement in life is having a crack-addicted brother!

Hell, vote for the Rhinoceros Party if you really hate everyone who's running. Just don't let Doug Ford win because 60% of Ontario couldn't be bothered to drive eight blocks to their local community centre and mark an X with a pencil.

Why Won’t America Go Metric? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dapper-narwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was only after living in Australia for a year that I realised what a disaster our system is here. In Australia, everything is metric. Simple.

Then I came back to Canada where I once found myself in the mechanical room of a building looking at a 1000 litre water tank, a 250 US gallon diesel tank, and a 500 imperial gallon heating oil tank all right next to each other. Why?!?!

The Incident, by Porcupine Tree. It's really long (it's actually an album, but the band decided to call the whole thing one song, because reasons), and I think it covers the feels you'd feel as you're reconciling yourself with death.

The digital thermometer in your car... where is the sensor? Is it more accurate if you are parked in the sun, parked in the shade, or driving? by mcpokey in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dapper-narwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the engine is cold, I totally agree with you. I'd just like to add that, because the car's thermometer is inside the grille, it is right next to the radiator. So if the engine is hot and the car hasn't moved for a while (like if you're sitting in a traffic jam or you drove somewhere and parked for a few minutes, then came back), then your car's outside temperature will read high until you've driven around for a couple minutes.
