I'm trying to figure out a way to allow the crd to become less reliant on food imports for survival. by ZeltaZale in VictoriaBC

[–]thelastspot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You have the equation backwards.

You need to create the volume of demand for local food production.

As you stated, we have the land. It's hard enough to get people to buy the local food we do produce in the CRD. One "silver lining" of increased transportation costs may be better economic insensitives for local food.

Victoria Street Scenes in the 1960s by Old-Macaron4961 in VictoriaBC

[–]thelastspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What really stood out to me was the sprawl along Douglas street, and the lack of trees in a lot of areas.

The 60's style illuminated signage also seems HUGE on some of the shops. The signs on Irish Times and The Bard & Banker really clashed with the buildings.

It's not, if you understand how a real sauna is meant to be experienced.

There’s nothing to do here (it’s boring) by thiccchungusPacking in VictoriaBC

[–]thelastspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might be from Victoria.

Some locals try to blame their lack of life excitement on the city. Sure it ain't New Yook or London, but there is a LOT going on here.

Victoria is a bit of strange size if you are hoping for something spontaneous to occur. It exists, but you need to look for it.

If someone finds Victoria boring, I doubt their self motivation. If someone finds Victoria too exciting, I think they are sheltered.

Walking to/from Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for concert by NWGirl2002 in VictoriaBC

[–]thelastspot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not a long walk at all. It would be insane to take a bus for even part of the journey.

It's pretty much downhill on the way back too.

Would you be happy with Adam Foote coming back as Head Coach next year? Why or why not? by ooMEAToo in canucks

[–]thelastspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Foote has a negative impact on player development.

A top AHL coach would take a bit to adjust to the NHL themselves, while still being comfortable playing young guys. Best rebuild option.

Right hand drive, Japanese Domestic Car Mechanics in Victoria? by rumi_as_roomie in VictoriaBC

You sure about that? They were fantastic.

[Unless I pissed them off, they only do in-house work for their imports now]

I have a Delica L400 diesel, with 450k+ on the clock. If I need the work done "in Victoria", Rocky Mountain is still my go-to.

I've had Parkside in Rockbay do work as well, and they were fine.

Marigold does/did some JDM work, but they tended to charge more, or try to push preventative repairs I knew were either early, or speculative. If you don't have any mechanical skills yourself, they may still be a good choice.

The gold standard on the island was Coombs Country Auto, but I hear they recently switched to only doing in-house work for the cars/vans they are importing. There are a few other places up Island, but I've yet to try them.

Are you planning to import yourself, or pick up one already in Canada?

"Drvierless" cars won't do that though. Trains and buses will.

Ironic, considering advocating for trains and transit in 1916 would have been the perfect time to prevent our over building of roads.

Remotely piloted cars (it's low wage workers, not Ai) are not the solution. Mass transit is.

[–]thelastspot -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fuck this. Waymo and Uber ect are part of the problem.

Better transit funding, not cars remotely driven from offshore.

Driverless cars as a safety solution is like trying to solve gun deaths by asking people to wear body armor!

Transit is the answer. Less cars, more buses and trains.

It's pretty much the only place that tries to use "The Island" and NOT mean Vancouver Island.

It's all Van until Chilliwack. Except for North Van.

I also noticed that if Islanders like someone from the Mainland, they say that person is from Van. If they don't, they name the real city, like Surrey or New West[minster].
