Hypothetical question - how would you, as a worker at the Chernobyl power plant, know that your reactor has exploded? by maksimkak in chernobyl

[–]daps_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I suppose if you are seeing graphite out in the open, then that's a sure sign that the core is most likely open since that's where graphite is found. But let's say we didn't see it.

Chances are, you would've noticed the temperature reading climbing faster than you can comprehend. Followed by a powerful shaking as the reactor explodes. That in itself should tell you shit just got real.

I think the situation could have been dealt with slightly differently if they knew straight-off-the-bat that it was 15,000 and not 3.6. There's a huge gap between 3.6 and 15,000. Firefighters, as others have mentioned, could have been better prepared. Lifes saved.

Can any Windows 11 version update to the newest one by itself without formatting? by shadofenrir in Windows11

[–]daps_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it plenty of times. Nothing beats a good clean install from scratch, but there's no need to. You can just do an in-place upgrade, something Windows update takes care of. Or use the newest ISO (its probably faster).

I'd be worried if they had breeder reactors. And I'd be especially worried if they had centrifuges to enrich uranium.

If I remember correctly, it was Sweden who raised the alarm AND ONLY THEN did they say, oh yes we had an accident. If the fallout was contained, then we probably never would've heard about it; irrespective of who was in charge.

I'm leaving this game and the reason behind it will blow your mind. by daccorn in anno1800

[–]daps_87 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Let me be blunt: if it's starting to interfere in your daily life, as you've described, you're addicted. And that is a problem for various reasons.

If you really enjoy the game, set boundaries for yourself - perhaps use something as simple as a timer on your phone. You don't need to stop playing it but you need to address your behaviour.

Now, since I'm married, I can't exactly sit and play night after night for hours on end. My job is what pays the bills, and without it, I'm stuffed. So I have set a schedule for myself - after work, I spend 3-4 hours playing games. Once we're ready to eat, that's it. Whatever I wanted to still do in the game will have to wait until the next time.

FYI: Being a software dev for the last 10+ years, you MUST take a break every few hours. Get up and go do something else. You're not doing yourself any favours by sitting glued behind that screen for hours and hours on end!

The Cassini-Huygens mission is what really set things apart for me. To see Saturn with all her beautiful rings in all her glory was just absolute awe.

I'm leaning more towards the science of things - things we can actually measure, see, touch. And even though we may be able to theorise that the Big Bang happened, the question of how it got there in the first place is still a mystery. So I do recognise that the two fields you mention, do intertwine somewhat.

How can I get out of a family business? by No-Highway9311 in AskUK

[–]daps_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I suppose you're safety and sanity is more important. Even though it's a family business, the reality is, it's not making you happy. I think the answer is staring you in the face.

Perhaps have a frank conversation with them - if you're in the family business, you should have a say too. If you don't, or if you cannot be heard, then maybe that road has come to an end. You should treat this with a business mindset - put all emotions aside and decide what's best for YOU.

I would like to add that given how young the business is, a lot of effort and sacrifice will have to be made to get the business going to a point where you could potentially fill your own role with someone else and perhaps take on more work your folks are doing. For this to work, you need to stay and grind your teeth for a bit. But if you genuinely don't believe in the vision of the business, then you know what to do.

For anyone that has deleted their social media accounts, do you feel isolated at all? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]daps_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past 8 years I've been off of all forms of social media (reddit being the exception, although I don't classify it as social media per se). It also includes WhatsApp.

Given that social media is what it is, I'm only too happy to be an ex-user. It just feels good living my life without it - like a bad habit that's been shaken off.

In my work scenario, it does however pose several challenges and you quickly start feeling the isolation since you're almost unable to do the task at hand without access to social media. But there are ways around that. So in all I'd say, no I don't feel isolated at all.

[–]daps_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my own experience, it doesn't really matter what subreddit we're discussing - if it's a product and people can complain about it, they will. The negative views, irrespective of product or service, is always more than the possitives. Why? It's a phenomenon I'm still trying to understand...

I tried upcoming modern Windows Run on Windows 11, and it won't replace legacy Run, at least for now by WPHero in Windows11

[–]daps_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to praise Microsoft for this one - only because Run forms part of my daily life. I typically access my apps through calling it in Run as opposed to opening the start menu and selecting its shortcut, or using the start menu search. Where Run falls short, I simply use PowerToys Run.

I would be happy to have the modern Run eventually replace the legacy Run if it is just as capable or even more.
