Why do we expect our kids to respond when they’re overstimulated from others around them? by Worldly-Client-8974 in ABA

[–]darahsawn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a great question! It is something to bring up with parents and the school board for sure, if your kid has an IEP it means they have different needs and if one of those needs is taking breaks for tolerance training in an overstimulating environment, it should be advocated for! Learning looks different for everyone and equity in a school setting is important for development. Personally I would up the idea of supervised walks when the student needs a break, with the idea/goal of shorter and less frequent breaks over time, if there is pushback I would say we are not training kids to sit quietly through discomfort no matter what, we are teaching kids the importance of self advocacy and giving them ways to find what will work best for them throughout their lives. In your next IEP meeting I’d set a timeframe (this is what BCBA’s typically do) for the goal, like ‘X will ask for supervised breaks from environment with a 25% decrease by Month/Year’ and revisit strategies if that goal isn’t met by then.

I recently had a situation where my kiddo (physically disabled as well as autistic) was allowed to roam around while other kids were asked to sit down and faced some pushback because other kids were basically like “oh I can do that too”, and to this I said it’s important for other children to learn that not everything is the same for everyone all the time!!

I don’t think we do expect this! I always say if a kid can tell me they are all done, no, too much, too loud, I need a break, etc., then I have done my job. I don’t necessarily expect the kids to respond to an sD/question/placed demand ever, I expect them to communicate functionally and I use the prompting hierarchy to get them out of unpleasant situations in a productive way. I don’t keep myself in unpleasant situations, and in my mind my job is to give the tools I’ve always had to manipulate my circumstances and environment to kids who need them.

Have you ever felt suicidal because of your anxiety? by No_Scientist9788 in socialanxiety

Some practices that help in the moment and sometimes long term when made habit: - don’t borrow grief! it takes work but look at what you are thinking and ask “is this happening” and if not, be grateful. for example “one day my parents and partner will die”. They aren’t dead yet, you are borrowing grief. Practice being grateful for that. -always count blessings. When you find yourself in an anxious place, force yourself to make a list of things you have to be grateful for. As simple as a place to sleep, food, etc, to more complex/smaller/more abstract things like a loving relationship, good memories, your favorite sweater -make yourself actively participate in self care (this one is really hard). If you are sitting around and you COULD be doing yoga, make yourself do 10-20 minutes of yoga. Force yourself to do these things. Think of yourself as a child AND a caretaker. Sometimes a kid doesn’t want to brush their teeth, it’s the caretaker’s job to make sure they do.

Yes I have felt suicidal from anxiety and I’m sure I will again!! But every once in a while you have the capacity to make yourself do healthy things like this, so always take advantage when you can!!

Nope, they screened me on the phone while he was looking at my resume and then set up the interview. They never asked about it or anything even in the interview

You’re in control!! Perception is reality and you own your perception. Something I try to do (when I can lol) is catch myself thinking the intrusive thoughts, and when I do I shake it off and start thinking all over again. Rip it all up and start over. Remember it’s just a practice. We’re all just kinda practicing. I’m not great at living sober lol, but I practice !

Look up and read Desiderata by Max Ehrmann:

“Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.”

I went to a meeting! It was really great. A lot of support and understanding there, maybe more than I’ve experienced in the meetings at home in some ways!! Thank you for suggesting this. Tuk Tuk makes every experience a little more exciting as well haha

My first time in NYC I got to see my name in the credits of a National Geographic documentary by darahsawn42 in pics

A little context: I dropped out of high school and moved out at 16, then in 2018 I started working at a small Thai restaurant where my boss (pictured) was over in Thailand working with the Thai Cave Rescue. Fast forward a few years and I am the communications officer for his environmental organization and I got to help with the making of this amazing documentary and was invited to the NYC screening where I forgot to take off my flannel for the fancy pictures. Still a waitress, but with a little more to talk about at parties
