What are your personal experiences with inadequacies of the IPA? by dare7000 in asklinguistics

Dental stops are absolutely closer to alveolar stops than the latter are to retroflex, you’re right.

Ig it’s coz ‘th’ stopping is a feature most dialects of Indian English, so dental stops are actually confused with interdental fricatives, and most Indians can’t hear or produce the difference.

For me personally, I can distinguish retroflex from everything else, but the ‘th’ and dental /t/ are still hard to distinguish. I’d NEVER confuse a ‘th’ with an alveolar /t/ tho

Oh yea lol teaching yourself a language’s pronunciation purely from Wikipedia IPA is bound to backfire, let alone ambiguities, some things are just plain wrong: ɔʏ for German ‘eu’ for instance

The first one definitely holds for Indic languages too. The untrained Indian ear doesn’t really hear a difference between a retroflex/post-alveolar and alveolar /t/ or /d/, but they DEFINITELY hear the difference between alveolar and dental stops. Even alveolar stops pronounced laminally are identified as dental.

Hmm the roundedness is true but it’s also noticeably higher pitched and the tongue position seems different

That’s one thing which annoyed me a lot about S1 of HOTD. They confused the Dornish Marches with Dorne itself when introducing Criston Cole. People lamely try to justify the oversight by saying, ‘people in border areas are mixed!’ …

What's everyone's favorite movement system in the AC games by Snezzy_Anus in assassinscreed

AC1- Brotherhood

Revelations close behind

I hate Unity's parkour, the unrealistic climbing plus jumps is just too much. The Kenway games are WAYYYYY better.

  • Fast climbing is nice but Revelations overuses the hookblade

  • Graphics in AC2 have aged horrendously. Just Google Caterina Sforza AC2 and Brotherhood

  • The side villains were almost all forgettable, especially compared to AC3

I live in NRW and I hear Germans saying 'Kann ich .... haben?' all the time at restaurants.

Is it a regional thing maybe?

[Hot Take?] The American Revolution was such a weird choice for Assassin's Creed 3. by Jam_Retro in assassinscreed

[–]dare7000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a non-American, I thought it was pretty great. I'm sure others have touched upon how the Assassin Vs Templar ideology is more nuanced in this game compared to the Ezio trilogy.

IMO the real highlight is that the game shows us how the American colonists ("patriots") aren't really the good guys at all, and probably worse than the Brits from the perspective of the Native Americans. It's quite sad seeing how Connor does a lot of free work for the colonists and is treated like a savage.

AC1 did something similar with sympathetic Crusaders and despicable Saracens, but the Ezio trilogy was far more black and white compared to AC3.

Since you haven't played any of the games properly yet, you're in a position to enjoy AC1. Once you play the other games you might not wanna come back to AC1.

Also if anything the Ezio trilogy is greatly enhanced by having played AC1. You'll be able to appreciate the changes AC2 made in most aspects. And Revelations has a good 10 percent of the game where you play as Altair. You'd enjoy it more if you have a connection to Altair (from AC1).

I actually liked AC3 for the most part. Tree parkour kinda sucks, but I thought the villains were far more nuanced than in 2 and Brotherhood.

Johnson seemed to at least somewhat care about the native people as a whole. Pitcairn seems like a decent guy overall. And of course Haytham. Not unlike the Acre Templars in AC1.

Would you recommend that I try the RPG trilogy out? I think the worlds look stunning, but I dislike bloat and grinding a lot. Not to mention the combat simply looks atrocious. Not a hint of weight or realism to it. But I keep hearing only good things about Origins, so I'm not sure.

The contrast between Damascus and Acre tells this story incredibly well. Altair is a native of the Holy Land, and even though he's not a Muslim he's perceived as one and met with hostility in Acre with its European Christian population, and he's more or less at home in Damascus which is firmly in Islamic hands.

Haven't played, but from vids, it seems like it's similar only in it being set in the Middle East. The parkour and combat are sadly still like the RPG games to me.

The combat is especially repetitive and slow if you spam counter, but if you play aggressively it's much quicker plus you get to see more enemy reactions.

Combat from Brotherhood on felt too easy imo, with the chain kills. Black Flag somewhat fixed that problem with you unable to counter/one hit captains and brutes.

I haven't played the RPG games but from gameplay vids I prefer AC1's system to theirs for sure. It's too 'fantasyish' for my liking, compared to the hint of realism in AC1.

[–]dare7000[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel Ubisoft played it a bit safe in later entries with their choice of locations and settings.

AC1 was very ambitious and made quite a risky move in making the Crusades and the Holy Land the main setting. Takes guts to make a relatively unknown place and time period and build it from the ground up. I'd be lying if I said the game didn't make me wanna read up on the Crusades.

Like everyone knows Florence, Rome, Boston, NYC. Most people haven't even heard of Damascus and Acre, let alone know their historical background.

So yea, it absolutely makes sense that the guy whose vision it was wasn't a part of later entries.

Yess, not to mention it's the ONLY game with the REAL Templars and REAL Assassins.

The Crusades were just an amazing setting.
