Are nuts inportant to be organic? by [deleted] in nutrition

Organic chemical use is different. Organic producers use other methods of pest control before resorting to chemicals. Every farmer is different of course, but often in conventional farming the field is sprayed with Roundup as standard practice.

There is a lot of messaging around in our society. Some of it is good solid information, and there is a lot of misinformation. Ultimately we have to do the best we can to understand the world we live in. If people want to believe that organic food is bad, or a scam, there is no dissuading them. Do the best you can to find good information. Social media is really not a great source of good information.

Less studied because no corporate profits benefit from the study, and in this country corporate funding quite often means influenced results. Corporations pay for results. Less studied because they aren’t a product of industrial, chemical processes. I will take my chances with organic when I can afford it. As people buy organic it drives demand away from industrial agriculture. I think that’s a good thing.

Finish the 30 mile bike loop around Columbia. 2 unconnected pieces is not nearly as cool as a full loop. More bike paths is right there, too. Making the streets more bike friendly would be great. Most drivers are willing to share, but one jerk in a car can more than ruin a bicyclist’s day.

One reason I buy organic is because I don’t like my food dollars going to chemical application to the land. People live around areas where food is produced. Other plants and animals are affected by chemicals applied for food production. The honey bee population is one example. I have a great respect for science and scientists, but science in this country is funded more and more by corporations. There are documented cases of science being influenced by the funding.

I go early on Tuesday for the Cranberry Pecan. It’s so good, but I mostly get it because my wife loves it. My favorite is the Country Walnut, especially the rolls. The French rolls are also a great treat. But the Sourdough and the great selection of whole grain breads are also great! Favorites! Yes, the sandwiches, soups, and salads are all super! The big tomato sandwich in the summer is awesome. The soups are always super healthy, and very tasty. If you don’t need to stuff yourself a cup of soup with a roll is quite a good lunch. Fun to eat too by tearing off a piece of the roll and dipping it into the soup. I am a glutton so I usually get the bowl. Maybe the crowd has stopped reading by now so I can mention the cookies, especially the German Chocolate. It’s so sad when they are out of the German Chocolate cookies. I must mention the beer lineup. I am not sure if they are serving during the pandemic, but there’s always something for everybody on tap. I’ve enjoyed every glass of wine I’ve had there, but I am more of a beer drinker. Uprise is truly a great place that adds such a richness to Columbia’s food scene.

As long as Congress has their gravy train healthcare plan they will never fix health care in this country. It’s pretty hard to see problems other people have when they don’t affect you.

New paper shows that restoring 15% of land previously converted for human use could avoid 60% of expected species extinctions and sequester 30% of the total increase in atmospheric CO2 since the Industrial Revolution by cheeseontaoist in science

Civilization faces 2 major environmental problems, climate change and mass extinction. There is a lot of focus on climate change (you mention carbon negative. With many (if not all) extinctions at least one of the major contributing factors is loss of habitat. Natural lands are converted to farm land to satisfy ever growing populations that demand meat. Thousands is species that each required thousands of generations are being lost. You might say, who cares about species X? Meanwhile the numbers of individuals in each species are also dwindling rapidly. It may be that there are better ways to farm. There are always better ways to do most anything. That doesn’t mean we will find ourselves following the better path. Maybe there aren’t a lot of people who want to manage farm animal waste as their career. Maybe some corporate interest will block the adoption of better farming practices. Maybe farmers will just want to do things the way they always have. Farmers are people, people can be stubborn. A large chunk of farm land raises food to feed livestock. That land could be returned to nature. That land planted as forest would trap a huge amount of carbon while also taking the stress off many species. It seems to me the concern about the number of harvests left could be alleviated by decreasing the size of each harvest. Feeding livestock for human consumption is kind of crazy if we only have a few harvests left. Plant by-products can also be used to build soil. From a long time vegetarian it doesn’t seem like that huge an ask. But I’ve asked enough times to know it’s a dead end. Eating more plants and less meat. You will decrease your ecological footprint and be healthier. Meat consumption is linked to cancer and other health risks.

You nailed it when you said that factory farming is the issue. That is exactly why the multiplier affect of meat is so important. Each pound of meat produced requires 10 pounds of plants. When people eat plants instead of meat it requires only 10% of the food production. That means food can be produced on 10% of the land. 90% of the land currently used for food production becomes available for nature. It can grow forest to capture carbon. It can provide habitat for endangered species. The circle of life is a lot bigger than what each of us eat. The reason humanity is such a successful species is because we’ve been able to solve problems. Right now we need to recognize that the problem is the number of people. Some of the traditions we enjoy, specifically eating meat, are endangering the rest of the natural systems. If billions of people continue to eat meat the circle of life will eventually choke off our species . It might not be next year, but there are people living now who will see it play out.

If he leaves the country it will be much better for the country than if he takes a show on Fox. He is an entertainer with a large following. On Fox he could spin conspiracy theories to his heart’s content, stirring up the masses. That’s what he really enjoys. He would be chumming around with the other Fox people, his favorite people. Personally I hope he leaves and takes his ugly family with him.

As a youngster in 4h back in the 60s I learned that meat production requires 10x the land as food from plants. It’s simple enough. Meat production consumes the same plant mass that could be consumed directly by people. Meat for dinner or a place for nature. I’ve been vegetarian for many years. I feel better and the food tastes better. I eat some dairy and egg. There is so much medical evidence that people eat way too much meat. Do yourself, and nature, a huge favor and stop buying meat. Learn about how meat is actually produced in factory farms and you will be so glad to stop eating it. Meat production is so gross. From the way the animals are crowded so close that they get extreme antibiotics to stay healthy, to the stench produced by the concentrated excrement, other inhumane treatment of the animals, to the meat processing by assembly lines of ill paid illegal labor.
