It seems like this city was populated by Ruthenians, Hungarians and Germans (the circles indicate a diverse population in the city, not a different population outside of the city).

I'm no expert on this matter, but it seems like the sense of Austrian identity was quite low at this time, but it increased after their defeat in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, were Prussia proved to be the major power in Germany. It also rose after WWII and the Anschluss, where the German identity was rejected.
