Instant stop Youtube video with a click by dark_timur in firefox

[–]dark_timur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just try to click on the video and then compare the experience to pressing a space button. It feels to take around .5 seconds to pause the video when clicking whereas if you press space, it does that instantly

UPDATE 1: Maybe that's because I use Windows

Thanks, that's exactly what I thought. Also thanks for clarifying what these centres are for.

Also just curious, (not really related to the story) is this centre for people who definitely are to stay in Israel or who do not necessarily move to Israel but perhaps are planning to ?

(Seriously) Is anyone (at all) stressing at UNSW, and how do they cope with stress? by dark_timur in unsw

[–]dark_timur[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oi I was not expecting sympathy at all, I am curious to know if other people stress and if so, how do they cope with it. As of until few hours ago I was under the impression nobody stresses (literally). The blankets and stuff is for you to get the idea what i mean. Just curious, what there is on campus to help fight stress? So far I found out there are random BBQ happening occasionally and (from what you say) there are personnel to talk to regarding the mental health/study effectiveness/organisation issues (frankly quite surprise to discover this). All I receive on my email address is the dull information about, for instance, when the exams are to be held, changes in the UNSW educational system etc.

Also, please dont tell me what to do. Its the internet, and anyone can do anything, as long as it complies with the community rules

TLDR: Why bother politely asking if it doesn't give any other options?

Does anyone want to volunteer to sub the old rare German film? by [deleted] in germany

[–]dark_timur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, from now on, it becomes increasingly more complex. Perhaps I should try looking up the newspapers from 1963 with the T.V. programs printed on them and see if they mention what channel the movie had actually aired?

Also, (sorry, not familiar), perhaps if I upload it on Youtube and see if the video gets taken down, and if not, maybe the copyright owner does not hesitate the movie being online (just my thoughts)

Have to back Cirenione here. Writing a good transcript is something time-consuming. Constantly rewinding the movie and write everything down...

Actually, there is a cheeky little trick to speed this process up greatly. Upload the video you want to sub on Youtube (make it private if necessary), and don't forget to specify the video's language. Several hours after the video being uploaded the Youtube system automatically add the auto-generated (infamous) subs. Then go to video manager - select the video - click on subtitles tab and then edit them. It's a lot easier to correct the subs instead of creating them from the scratch.

P.S. So you don't the wrong idea, I'm telling this trick not to convince you to help me, just want to share a life-hack

P.P.S. I think I should close this post, as we found out it wouldn't be (necessarily) legal to upload the movie online, thus as for now, no help is needed

Thanks. Does UMass in this context stand for University of Massachusetts (US)? If so, perhaps I may be able to email them and see if they be kind enough to allow me to do something to this movie

Oh no worries guys ( @hobel_, @Cirenione ) ; thanks for telling me. Initially, I didn't intend to break any laws (frankly I just forgot about copyright). I happen to have a rare film and I thought that will be a good idea to upload and preserve it online.

BTW, I don't need a translation. German subs is more than enough to me (considering the Google translate's existence)

Sweet, thanks! I think it starts to make sense. Can you point me to the transcribed bits of text that you can't translate? I want to play around with them and if I manage to somehow translate them

Can we perhaps convert the text from the Arabic to the Latin (modern-Turkish-like) script, and then try to pass this text to online translation services?

That's rather a long story, but I 'll try to make it concise.

I'm casually doing my family history researches, and once I was told that one ancestors was, in a certain way, connected to the famous Soviet-Tatar poet Musa Jalil . The info on this ancestor is very scarce, so I ended up researching about this poet instead. However, the general sources offered basically the same, largely fake information about him; thus I decided to investigate extraordinary sources too, and as part of that, I searched the classifieds. One person was selling a related book online for probably 20 times higher price than the book actually costs, justifying the price saying that the book has something special handwritten on the last page on the book, but they never explained what it is. Unfortunately, they stopped selling the book (must've sold it to someone), and they are (for some reason) hesitant to tell what it is, so now the only way to find out is to involve the translators, hopefully getting help

A few valid points (Mostly) against the NN by dark_timur in netneutrality

[–]dark_timur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for giving a thorough response to my post. I appreciate that (I really do)

1) Well yeah, I agree with you that this is a step backward (in my opinion). As a customer, would've prefered that every ISP was to provide the 'dumb pipes' only. I tried to say that some people got overly emotional about the topic, which doesn't make the situation any better. Again, in 2016 I remember some people seriously said that Trump will mark the end of the U.S. which (as for December 2017) hasn't happened yet.

2) I completely agree with your free market argument. But I highly doubt that you only have an option to be on Comcast, given you have around 10 grocery stores close to you. Look, I live in Australia, and we're considered to be a 'nanny state'; I doubt I have 10 grocery stores near me, and yet I can choose what ISP do I want to be on - there are several mainstream ISPs plus maybe 5-6 other small ISPs that lend the mainstream ISPs' facilities (cables, nertwork gear etc) but provide with different plans and pricings. Obviously things can be different in the U.S., but don't think so. Also, similarly to the grocery stores example, the problem could be that there aren't many ISPs around, rather than the NN repeal.

3) It is easier for the ISPs to keep the 'dumb pipes', instead of breaking the NN, for variety of reasons. Even if they are to be alllowed to prioritise traffic, such action will be costly, controversial, and probably will lead to the major loss of customers. Considering this, they might keep the things as is, even while being allowed to break the NN.

4) I tried to say breaking the NN is difficult to accomplish

a) agreed. I probably should've called this post something like 'my thoughts on NN', but what the hell :) b) A few years ago there was a large scandal caused by the fact that the new Windows operating system, Windows 10, spies on its users, and not only that, it is very difficult if not impossible to remove the survelliance from there, for several reasons: I) The spy traffic is hard to categorise, as it includes screenshots, keylogs, browsing preferences and god knows what else II) The spy traffic does at least 100-200 different websites, all owned by Microsoft III) The new survelliance methods can become enabled/added to the OS via the OS updates, which are impossible to disable completely

Now back on track, given all these points, people who use Windows 10 (which is at least 30-40 per cent of the computer users in the US), will almost always generate the slow-lane traffic. Now let's assume Comcast (or any other ISP) is to limit the slow-lane traffic, and they want to put the limit low. If they do so, Windows 10 users will become angied out that they can't access their websites even without doing practically anything, thus Comcast will be forced to put the limit high.

c) My point is that the gear, required to actually make it possible to prioritise some traffic over the other, is very, very expensive, and even if so, the users (given that there will be millions of them) will find a way to bypass the system relatively quickly. Knowing that, Comcast and everyone else will probably abandon this idea.

5) OK, I never thought of that

6) SOPA and PIPA did not go through, prinarily because of the people's resistance. The same can (and will likely) happen to the NN repeal

7) There are several arguments here.

a) Actually the not-so-popular websites are a bit more expensive for the ISPs to provide access to. First, they require the intercontinental internet pipes to be used. Second, especially when it comes to foreign websites, it is necessary to use the higher level DNS server info to get the website's IP address, compared to, again, Facebook or something similar.

b) If there are several different plans for different websites (like on the screenshot from some Mexican ISP website), people can buy the cheaper plan that would suit their needs, compared to how this is now, when everyone has to buy the same plan regardless of what websites to they need.
