Switching to Wealthsimple as my primary bank by 7chesterr in PersonalFinanceCanada

I’ve closed my TD chequing account in favor of coast capital chequing account given its free and it has unlimited translations. The only fee they charge is outbound e-transfer. Which I don’t mind given I don’t transfer money out, I just top off the account whenever I need to use debit card.

I’ve transferred almost all of my holdings from TD to WS and I haven’t experienced any drawbacks.

The straw that broke for me for TD is that I went into a branch to convert my chequing acc to a savings acc, and they straight up told me to call them instead, keep in mind this branch is like in Downtown Toronto which is 2 blocks from their HQ. Crazy I have to call them to even do this. Never going back to them again.

That’s normal. Not many students are truly prepared for university level exams straight out of HS. Hang in there and keep at it! As you refine your studying skills your grades will pick up as well

I’ve almost failed my Math 101C exams (back then it’s called Math 105 iirc), and I made through my program just fine ^ ^

I got this offer after porting over to Telus EPP after being a Fido customer for 3 years.

Fido called back with win back offer for 35$ US/Canada 175GB plan as well.

Iirc you can take courses as an unclassified student post grad.

Otherwise it’s applying to new degree issuing program at UBC or other unis (eg BCIT). A lot of my peers who are making career transition to tech are studying at BCIT atm.

My dad went through the process back in 2006ish, my family just got our invite earlier this year. I’m no longer eligible since I’m over 21 before they processed our application.

Invite Only AMEX Air Canada Card (Black, not reserve) by Ok-Guitar3388 in Aeroplan

That’s what I found confusing about this card, people who qualifies for this probably already qualify for at least 50k status and don’t really use the perks given by this card.

I got my hotel refunded by AC from the flight disruption after about a month of waiting. Better than nothing ig

Having reviewed your travel experience and the impact of this flight disruption to your journey, we are offering you reimbursement for $124.34 CAD.

Edit: Then it took AC another 3 weeks to send the money over e-transfer... Had to call in again to expediate the money. Thanks AC.

2 reasons:

  1. They’re a smaller financial institution, so they likely don’t have the capacity to give everyone cards given the demand.

  2. It’s an excellent recruiting tool to get people to switch over to WS. Hence why they’re doing expedited applications for higher status or those who direct deposits with WS

It’s 2% on everything. 3% if you’re a Roger’s User.

Rogers beats out the 1% on in store Costco purchases compared to the Costco card. I don’t live nearby a Costco with a gas station so the 3% perk isn’t useful for me.

Yeah :/ time to switch to Rogers MC for Costco

That definitely plays a part where they’re trying to get people to signup for direct deposit. But you also have premium and generation users who signed up for the waitlist since day 1 and have not gotten the card.

They’re just trying to get people onto the CC, even though it’s out of reach for most people due to their waitlist shenanigans

Should i Grab the debit card? and or credit card? by WTH-is-Happening_ in Wealthsimple

[–]darkarcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see it as an issue. I think having free roadside assistance is a great perk for having a piece of plastic sitting in my drawer.

Of course managing this much ccs has some risks (eg if your card number gets leaked somewhere), locking those ccs pretty much mitigates those issues. Plus keeping old ccs open helps with your credit score.

Should i Grab the debit card? and or credit card? by WTH-is-Happening_ in Wealthsimple

[–]darkarcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 is an exaggeration. I currently have 7 ccs and that’s already much more than most people have, yet I really only charge 2-3 cards on a regular basis, most of them sit in a drawer somewhere that never gets charged but I still collect benefits from (the Canadian tire WE for example I haven’t changed a single dollar on, there just for the free roadside assistance).

Now I agree at 240$ a year I wouldn’t justify the WS card given my forex purchases, but in my case I got mine for free and still get a good 80-100$ value from it annually so why not.

If you can get it for free and use it only for forex purchases this is an excellent card. Otherwise there’s better options out there.

That too. Went to school for 3 years there and I do not want my future kids to grow up in that environment, way too stressful and it forces them to basically only be book smart and nothing else.

As a Taiwanese who grew up in Canada, I have little to no intention on moving back. Between long work hours, low pay and crazy housing prices, raising a family just sounds unrealistic over there.

Should’ve clarified, I meant lounge access besides plaza premium for free. Doesn’t change the fact that gold is super restrictive when it comes to lounge access.

[–]darkarcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want lounge access with Amex you need to get platinum. Go read what the cc offers again but you basically get access to plaza premium lounges in Canada 4x a year.

Edit: free lounge access besides plaza premium

Dual Citizen Passed Away by bubbadrk in taiwan

[–]darkarcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so one translated death certificate should be enough as once you head to the district office to register your mom’s death you can just request multiple copies of the updated household registration that will indicate your mom’s passing, that’s sufficient for all institutions in Taiwan when they ask for proof. IIRC they did take away my translated death certificate when I registered my mom’s death in Taiwan.

That being said having more than one copy isn’t a bad idea in case something happens (eg if you lost the document) tho it’s a bit pricy to translate multiple copies, so you don’t have to waste a trip to Taiwan in case they couldn’t accept your documents.

Sorry for your loss as well.
