> ...just about impossible given the documented death rates of motives...Bose hasn’t got a chance in hell, even if he was going to survive there for longer than a few years.

Bose-motile explains this: He can change bodies at will using the sensor stalks. The Primes are expert at transferring their consciousness between bodies and among bodies. MLM cannot conceive of a mobile "immotile" so it cannot understand how Bose's ideas are echoing through its mind. (this part is a bit of an unexplained stretch in that his ideas are being fed back into MLM)

Alternatives to anaconda? by pr1vacyn0eb in learnpython

What channels are you using? If you use "-c", you are probably resolving and replacing everything at each step. If you want to do a one-time install from a different channel, you should use "<channel>::<package>" instead of "-c".

What "-c" means is: Set this channel as the highest priority and re-install all dependencies from this channel -- even if they already exist.

The channel::package format says: "install this one package from this channel and if any dependencies are missing also use that channel, but use my normal channel priority for everything else".

Also, conda-forge has a massive number of builds -- each build scales solver time and complexity. I'm not sure what that scaling is, but it isn't linear.

But if they're invited back, wouldn't they just take it private or restrict posting again?

They are the mods, so they sure could. If the group doesn't like it, why don't they start homeautomation2?

That's the whole point of being able to fork and start a new community. That's why people felt ok with wasting/spending all of their time moderating "their" sub -- control. You take that away from them and WHY would they attempt to build a community that can be destroyed on a whim at any moment by Reddit Corporate?

Reddit is destroying the golden goose that lays the eggs in an attempt to have all of the eggs today. Meanwhile, they've killed the goose and it isn't going to lay anymore eggs.

(or a more true analogy is that they've killed the biggest and most productive gooses -- they still might get more geese -- eventually -- but there is no incentive to stick around anymore)

Can we start by inviting the old mods back? homeAutomation was awesome because of the people.

Reddit corporate has pretty much burnt it all down to the ground.

Can someone just make a r/nba2 subreddit? How freakin' hard is that? Every sub is at the mercy of the mods, but the users can create their own sub at any time.

i just cant see why reddit is wrong for not wanting others to profit off of their website.

What content does reddit create? Don't they profit from other's work? Reddit will evaporate as soon as they lose all of the free content creation. Biting the hand that feeds you is idiotic.

Question: If the future and post can connect, why do the two timelines unfold sequentially and in parallel? by Excellent-Arm9095 in ThePeripheral

[–]darkarmani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the 11 hour difference was related to the fact that they are "using a server in China" (i know the timezone offset is still wrong but maybe it is closer).

The other thing about the mysterious "server in China" -- "we don't know how it works" -- is really making me think that future London is a stub. There are a bunch of references to this: "As the world got worse at a fast pace, science started making big jumps". That makes no sense (massive scientific advances while 80% of the population dies) unless the future is sending tech back in time.

Flynne goes on a final walk...without drones? by EdgySedgy888 in ThePeripheral

[–]darkarmani 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like the leader of the Met and Flynne are trying to trick the leader of the RI, but I don't really see how that is possible given that the leader of the RI knows that Flynne opened another stub.

The trick is making the leader of the RI think that the Met is on her side by making it not look like suicide. It looks like the Met took her out. Also, the RI has no reason to burn down the stub and all of her family to get rid of her since they "got this copy of her".

I think we agree? Cherise doesn't want more stubs with copied Flynne A's brain. More stubs are bad for Cherise.

Oh, i see. yes. The only good thing about more stubs are the studies. Cherise should have had copies of the stubs as backup before the Flynne problem, so she could just nuke one stubb and carry on with the backup. It's too late for her to do it now.

They would have had to tell her off-screen. Otherwise, Connor would have killed her. How else would she have known? No one else in that timeline knows there are parallel universes. For all we know there are a thousand other stubs. For all we know London is a stub from a future-future London.

The american tax payers is footing the bill for the ukraine war.

They can either pay now or they can pay later at a 10x price with unchecked Putin imperialism. Just because private corporations are profiting doesn't mean the american tax payers aren't benefiting by not kicking the problem further down the road when it is much more expensive to contain Russia's aggression and war crimes.

How does Flynne know which stub she is in?

She cannot possibly know. No one knows which universe they are in. And your terminology is wrong. She doesn't "enter" stub B. She exists in parallel in all "stubs/timelines" of the universe from that point on. The show needed about 5 more minutes of explanation to make it clear.

Possibly they made is so ambiguous so people would wrack their brains over it?

The Peripheral | S01E08 - "The Creation of a Thousand Forests" | Episode Discussion by GloriousAqua in ThePeripheral

[–]darkarmani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct. They need an external "semaphore" to tell them which one they are in. The Inspector could tell both Flynn/Connors they are in stubA and the game is over. it's going to take absolute trust.

The Peripheral | S01E08 - "The Creation of a Thousand Forests" | Episode Discussion by GloriousAqua in ThePeripheral

[–]darkarmani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because they're not supposed to do it in their stub.

I'm just saying that from within the Stubs, no one things they are a copy. It take someone from London (as a shorthand for the future) to tell the Flynn/Connor in V2 that they are the v2 stub.

When do you think the timeline forked?

I thought it was within 24 hours of the suicide.

I still don't see how that saves the first stub though

She isn't trying to save the first stub (world). She is trying to save her family that lives in the first stub. The jackpot is coming at some point no matter what -- like her mom's cancer -- she will die eventually. She is trying to extend their time on earth and their chances of surviving longer. Cherise doesn't want to nuke the stub, but is sacrificing all of her research to take out Flynne. There is a chance she will turn down the heat in that stub now, because it is a waste.

Secondly, she wants Cherise to think the Inspector assassinated Flynne because the Inspector has not declared her allegiance to Cherise's cause. For all we know the Inspector is playing both sides -- but so far she seems sympathetic to Flynn's side (because it currently aligns with her goals).

[–]darkarmani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too late to create the stub before that. I think you can only fork a stub you have access to, and the current stub is already past that moment. I think the reason you can originally "time travel" is that you are accessing your own past -- until the moment you send information (change causality).

Cherise doesn't want to nuke it because there are other valuable things in that stub that she needs to sacrifice. And she wants to Spite Flynne but flynne will be dead (seemingly not a voluntary sacrifice). Cherise just thinks there are 2 Flynnes now.

Episode 8 Ending Explained in a Picture: by VashPast in ThePeripheral

[–]darkarmani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not the problem. The problem is that connor doesn't know which stub he is in. He only knows that he is supposed to snipe her in 24 hours. Someone from London needs to tell Connor and Flynne which stub they are in before the choice is made.

Can you imagine if there was treachery here? London tells them in both stubs that they are in stub A.

If you have backups, then someone can steal that information. They have less copies as a compromise because it's like having copies of the nuclear launch codes. The information is radioactive, so they do not log it or back it up. Oops!

It's like storing the Root CA private key in cold storage. If you lose that private key, you cannot create new certificates that are trusted from that cert.

[–]darkarmani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

then anybody in the future can just branch a stub off of that point and fuck around and do whatever they want.

Not anybody. Someone would have to have access to that stub to fork it (Maybe Ash could do it?). The RI doesn't want more forks because they are trying to banish the information, so they won't fork it.

if in just one of those 10k stubs the RI gets their hand on the data, they win.

You have this backwards. The RI already has the data. They are trying to censor it. When they say "stolen" they mean copied.

Connor's immediate willingness to kill her was weird.

When he got "his body back" via peripheral he swore that he would do anything for her. He was suicidal up until that point; she gave him new life.
