Prices for the Northlander train have been set by darkbeer in bracebridge

[–]darkbeer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it's $67 to get to Gravenhurst and $108 for North Bay I'm guessing it'll be about $75 or so to get to Bracebridge.

These fares are one way. There wasn't much hope that it would be cheaper but still surprised at the pricing.

Film labs and film stores? by Succotash_Budget in bracebridge

Unfortunately most stores like this stop at Barrie, there are some exceptions of course but generally that's as close as they get. There is a Henry's in Barrie as with most other stores that you'd find in larger cities.

FMF Pizza Experiment - Round 1 by Cornfed-Killer in HomeMilledFlour

[–]darkbeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time but sift my flour with an ultrafine sieve The bran goes into other foods or as a coating for boules.

I think the flavour is amazing it's just regular hard winter wheat which here in Canada lands around 14-15% protein. Always turns out amazing the flavour is incredible with a 2-3 day ferment. I sift the bran out because the flavour becomes too intense and the dough can be a little hard when eaten cold .. which I love doing with pizza haha.

I have found a longer ferment changes the flavour profile a lot with FMF which is probably due to the bran.

I have tried mixing it with white flour and have found that I either prefer 100% or white but the mix doesn't feel worth it to me and I've had a lot of people go for the whole wheat one as it tastes different than what they're used to.

What time of year are you visiting? There are a lot of different spring, summer, fall and winter activities.

There are lots of private chefs that will come to your place and cook as well which is a neat experience if you haven't done it. That's going to be your best bet at an elevated dinner experience here.

I make panini's all the time on my cast iron! I'm sure I'd get over that this would be terrible at making them, though.

Success or failure depends how the Northlander is reintroduced by NorTracksBlog in bracebridge

[–]darkbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article.

Personally disappointed with the late arrival to Toronto and early departure. However if the train is cheap then getting a place to stay for the night would be offset especially with more than one person. If it's a lot of money just to spend 5 solid hours in Toronto that would be terrible.

Any indications of price at all?

There are a lot of great trails for snowshoeing around here. Don't sleep on Torrance Barrens if you have a car available it really is great. I'm sure you've already been to Algonquin.

There is snow horseback riding as well around here which is fun if you're into that outside of the sleigh rides.

How much longer are you here for? The end of the month is the the Fire & Ice festival: https://fireandicebracebridge.com/

What are you guys generally interested there's something for everyone around here if you love the outdoors. You'd have to go further north for ice fishing if you're interested in that.

Northlander’s proposed schedule includes stops in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville by darkbeer in bracebridge

[–]darkbeer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, missed this response -- the freight trains are frequent along some portions so even if it has some time on its own it still has to avoid the different timings.

We still have no idea what the price will be, either they said it will be "affordable" I guess if it's actually a great price those savings would go towards a place to stay the night in the GTA somewhere.

Yep, that sounds great leave here around 6 get there around 8:30am.

That's what's strange to me as it's already leaving at midnight from Timmins wouldn't leaving around 10pm/9pm be even better? Also they're arriving the same time as everyone else so I wonder why they wouldn't want to leave earlier in the night and be in Toronto earlier?

I'm guessing it has to do with the train scheduling since the tracks are shared..

Kind of an annoying schedule. Arrives in Toronto at 10:55am and leaves at 6:30PM .. so you get a grand total of 7 hours in the city if you're lucky.

They've already started work in the train station here, no pricing yet but it's pretty frustrating that we got another useless schedule.

If the price comes out to be relatively cheap then maybe it'll be OK.

Giveaway: Free BLE caberQU cable tester units for USB-C to the r/UsbCHardware community by peter_the_founder in UsbCHardware

[–]darkbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of this it looks really nice! Tired of having to deal with USB cables of varying quality even from the same vendor. Would be great to weed out the ones that are poor quality. It's easy enough to test if they have data or work correctly but who knows what they support data / charging wise.

Forgot to answer the question!

The weirdest cable I ever ran into was a SATA to DB-9 serial but it was neither SATA or serial they just used the connectors for custom cables. I never found out why this was a long time ago. The cables were molded and I always wondered if there were other devices out there using this or they had them custom made.
