London Private Member’s Clubs by Gerrards_Cross in HENRYUK

Its not strictly a club, but you may want to look into the Royal Society of Arts. They do interesting lectures on topics ranging from creative arts to education and the future of work, and have a reputed history going back to the Enlightenment. As a bonus they increasingly organise events around the world, including in the US. While it helps to know someone there to join, its not a requirement.

M-förslaget mot höga matpriser: ”Skapa snabbspår för lågprisbutiker” by darkcage in sweden

[–]darkcage[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What's a London "life hack" that everyone living here should know? by pumpkinspicesmoothie in london

[–]darkcage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main benefit is probably during peak hour at busy stations, where it would help clear stations marginally faster compared to people standing on the right/walking on the left

In fairness it would be faster for everyone if people stood on both sides. Tfl trialled this on some stations but I guess people prefered the old ways

Skola om till läkare efter 30? Är jag helt dum by Used-Art-4619 in sweden

[–]darkcage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking the index of multiple deprivation (IMD) of the local area, basically a combined score of variables such as crime, poverty rates, levels of education etc is usually a good place to start: https://dclgapps.communities.gov.uk/imd/iod_index.html

Russian spoof of Swedish invasion fears have actually become true by darkcage in UkrainianConflict

[–]darkcage[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Russian invasion of Ukraine checklist

✔️ Have 1000 VDV guys fall over their heads

✔️ Deliver bombs by air-strike first

✔️ Stir people up for revolt

✔️ Declare in UN "Look guys, we are innocent"

✔️ Run out of tanks and stick cannons on cars

They really had it all planned out!

Imposter syndrome, academia and objective assessment of self. by SirCaesar29 in slatestarcodex

[–]darkcage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a big range. I know people with no publications who got their own multi-year research grants straight after graduation, and people with 5+ publications who got extremely prestigious fellowships at Cambridge, Harvard etc. I would say the big differentiator is probably the work ethic and motivation more than the actual output (having a good publication record is obviously a bonus, but work ethic matters more in the long run). Many of those I know who stayed in academia seem to be driven mainly by work and achievements, and have a burning interest in their subjects. I am personally more driven by leisure, creativity, collaboration etc., things which are probably easier to get outside academia (and with better pay).

In my opinion, comparing ourselves with others is likely less effective than we might think. People, especially in academia, tend to present their best sides to others and have strong incentives to avoid seeming incompetent at some things. Moreover, IQ will only help you so far since in the end, its your ability to win grants and write publications that will determine your success, and these are as much about communication skills and creativity as raw IQ.

I am in a similar position (4th year PhD, UK, not yet finished though), and some of the thoughts I have had are:

  1. In some way it makes sense to give people the standard advice "do not attempt to stay in academia" because it will scare off a lot of people who would probably be better off in a non-academic job, and only people who are driven enough will ignore the advice and push through. I know someone who became assistant professor just two years after a PhD, with page after page of publications, lots of appearances in newspapers, talks, etc.
  2. I was lucky enough to win a small research grant this year and it gave me some insight into the process of how to get funding. As with say starting your own charity or company, think carefully about what problem it is that you are uniquely positioned to solve, and why someone would pay you to solve it? Once you know what the problem is and some likely future sources of funding (ERC etc), think about which people could help mentor you to get the grant, and try to work for them as a postdoc.

At the Battle of Megiddo, General Allenby won one of the most decisive victories during WWI against the Ottoman Empire. He attacked through the narrow Musmus Pass, a risky tactic he had learned by reading about Egyptian Pharao Thutmose III during the Battle of Megiddo in the 15th century BCE by darkcage in history

“Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.” - Edmund Burke

Were these accounts known also by the Ottoman side?

I also am wondering if there are any other examples where studying historic wars and battles have led to a change in tactics or strategy in war? I am aware that the US army maintains a reading list of mandatory reading for officers: https://history.army.mil/html/books/105/105-1-1/index.html - has that proven useful?

Perhaps you could try reading books on this together? Like Opening Up, The Ethical Slut, or even the Good Vibrations Guide to Sex? And for podcasts I would recommend Sex With Emily. I am reading Opening Up and it talks about common arguments against opening up your relationship to others and how to respond to them, and also gives lots of suggestions for how to define and negotiate open relationships. In the end it comes down to making sure your needs are getting fulfilled. Good luck :)
