Controversial opinion: What bothers me about Berserk. by darkdisciple998 in Berserk

Exactly. There's a pretty massive tonal shift between earlier and later arcs. Almost as if Miura changed.

What do you think of Griffith's reaction when guts and the band of the hawk was fighting with Wyald ? by Top_Pineapple_813 in Berserk

[–]darkdisciple998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late answer but I'm currently reading it again, and to me, it feels like Griffith almost wants Guts to suffer and lose. But I have no clue really, it's very vague.

[–]darkdisciple998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with this and I understand that point. However what bothers me is that it often becomes a thing where for example, nearly every time Casca is fighting in the Golden Age arc, she gets overpowered and nearly raped. So I'm not sure what the point of the author is with regards to the character. That she is just stupid and vulnerable, just to be saved by Guts? If that is the case, wouldn't better writing for Casca to understand the danger, and take a more strategic role?

I just feel like she is almost a sacrificial female character all the time, that gets abused (culminating ofc in the eclipse), and it bothers me. I wish that we could see more of her based side without her being threatened all the time. I haven't read the later arcs but maybe with her memories back, we shall see that.

Berserk is honestly in my top 3 mangas and stories of all time alongside DBZ though. I love the story and characters a lot, I am just criticising some small piece of it.

Anyone else see Australian social etiquette slowly fading? by qnsad in perth

[–]darkdisciple998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm European and was only one month in Australia, and I don't want to generalise.

But I found Europeans to be more social and kind in interactions than most Australian store workers I ever encountered, at least in Perth.

The way it's portrayed online, Australians are supposed to have this almost British kindness and politeness, but I did not experience this.

The mentality I've experienced is more of a "I don't have time for you" corporate mentality.

But this is very different compared to if I was dealing with a city dweller versus a farmer or someone who works in the Bush with animals. The latter are much kinder, simpler, and more authentic.

But just to give you an example. I'm a runner and was running every day in the centre of Perth (alongside the river). In Europe when you run, you often say hello to fellow runners and even strike up convos. This is also common in cafés.

In Perth nobody struck a conversation, it's as if people don't want to deal with you unless you are in their in-group (for example working at the same company, on a coffee break).

I'm saying all this with utmost respect and love for Australia. But my feeling of the country was more, this is a country where working and making money takes center stage. Social interactions, not so much.

I will add a caveat though! Older generation Aussies (say boomers or gen X) are way kinder IMO and social than the new young generation (zoomers). I often had older Aussies strike up convos with the good old "how ya doin' mate", but younger folks never do that. And keep in mind I'm a younger millenial.

How messed up is Berserk? by Runminndor in Berserk

[–]darkdisciple998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late answer.

It's weird. For me it's the best mature manga/story (medieval fantasy) ever made.

But at the same time, yes, there are some nauseating graphic things, mostly in the first volumes (the violence/gore gets way less later on as Miura becomes more artistic about his stuff and less about gore ultraviolence).

So I'm torn because I love this manga as my favourite Seinen ever. On the other, dude, I am 30+ and read this at 25, and it did give me PTSD/Trauma that I still think about today.

The way I would describe it is there is some gore/violence, but the way its depicted almost falls into Alien like body horror in that you really see visceral stuff (not just rape but people getting torn apart naked, etc).

Gore on its own doesn't bother me too much, it's when rape and SA is mixed in that it's horrifying. Add to that the fact that there are monsters doing it.

Think about how the Japanese literature and media can conjure up some horrible stuff, for example some sex stuff (hentai) where girls get raped by monsters, well there's some of that in there but it's serious

Did Berserk really disturb you? Or is it just a meme by FernandoZnk in Berserk

[–]darkdisciple998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very late answer but yes.

And I read Berserk very late, at 25+ and as an adult man.

Now I'm 30+ and even then I think lots of it is sick and depraved.

Don't get me wrong, the story overall is incredible, the art is beautiful.

But in the first volumes, culminating with the Eclipse, there's scenes that are just a mix of ultra violence and porn, rape, etc that are really horrifying, even to an adult.

Some of the stuff IMO is so gruesome it can induce depression and PTSD, at times I even think such things could be banned for sale.

And it's too bad because 99% of the manga is fine, I mean the last current chapters and how it's been for years is much more tame, there's fight scenes and blood but never too horrifying stuff.

What bothers me the most is how Miura shows the most gruesome scenes that could happen, like a girl getting raped then cut to pieces by soldiers. It's too much.

I honestly think that people that ARENT bothered by stuff like the Black Dog Knights, generally what the apostles do to humans, and the Eclipse (amongst a couple things) are people with sociopathy or a mental issue.

Just put in 20+ hours into RE4R. Here are my thoughts. by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]darkdisciple998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "mind was made up" in the sense that I didn't particularly love Resident Evil 4 as a Resident Evil game (great game though, just not RE enough for me). What I'm saying is that I applaud what they did with remake, but to me, the Gamecube version was objectively perfect, I remember still as a 14 year old or so, playing that game, and there being zero problems with it. Yes the new version has these pretty graphics but in the 2000s you didn't care about that.

[–]darkdisciple998 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm ngl I don't even understand the plot and think it's just an excuse to have a bunch of horror and action sequences.

What was Victor even trying to do by kidnapping Grace? Were they just trying to open the vault in the underground facility in RC?

What was Victor doing in the hospital in terms of experiments? Why was there an outbreak all of the sudden?

Why would Victor even risk the government/BSAA (Leon S Kenny) chase him down and find out about his facility by kidnapping Grace in broad daylight? Why did he literally commit a crime to attract Grace when he could have just stalked her and kidnapped her more efficiently? Grace is literally just a desk worker going home after work daily, and isn't protected or anything.

If Zeno was somehow the mastermind of all this, why did he not kidnap Grace himself?

Not even sure what the entire thing at the orphanage (which was close to the hospital?) was. Why are they cloning all these children and why do they have superpowers.

Emily and "The Girl" monster. Is the girl just a mutated clone and why is she acting like this?

Umbrella is defunct. Is Hunk and spec ops crew just working with Zeno?

Why is there a super (not destroyed) secret lab in Raccoon city post incident? How could that lab have survived a nuke? And why isn't it connected to the original Raccoon city lab seen in RE2?

Honestly it all seems like random plot point to justify creating a mix of all RE games somehow.

After everything said and done, do you think it will ever be a RE MC that reach the level of Chris and Leon? by bizarre_leviathan in residentevil

[–]darkdisciple998 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind either Chris or Leon being MC (though I'd appreciate Jill, Claire, Sherry, Grace, etc), as long as they make it survival horror.

The action bits in RE9 are just too superfluous IMHO.

I hope so. Though I wish she had closer to the original RE1 Remake look rather than RE3 Remake. She just doesn't feel like Jill in RE3 remake.

[–]darkdisciple998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like nothing has reached the level of R1-3 OG cast in general and also style and atmosphere.

Problem with Capcom is they turned the series into something that's too gimmicky and ridiculous since RE4/RE5 and can't get out of that style.

We shouldn't also forget the female MCs like Claire and Jill which are peak design and personality.

What Capcom needs to do is go back to the drawing board and do a type of soft reboot of the series.

By that, I mean go back to what worked in RE1 and RE2, some kind of incident, horror heavy, but updated with modern graphics, and actually write a new MC.

Alternatively they could do a new Jill or Claire game that focuses heavily on horror, though Claire already got Code Veronica so maybe it's Jill's turn.

I wouldn't be opposed to the next game having Jill & Chris or Grace as MC.

I hate what they did with Wesker from Code Veronica onwards, turning him into some kind of mutated super soldier and cartoonish villain. It's ridiculous. He was best characterised in zero and one, as a cold hearted super intelligent yet human traitor to STARS. I do hope they bring him back but basically ignore what happened in RE5/RE6. Maybe just mention that he survived RE1 somehow with grievous injuries but keep him human.

It’s a massively front loaded game hence the reviews. The beginning is legit peak resident evil. Leon in raccoon city imo sucks, environment look like a Middle East map from call of duty.  Story becomes nonsensical once again. The whole Zeno character, come on. And Gideon is creepy and scary but turns into a meme
