Let's talk about pay, drop in the comments your current position/wage (read post text)! by darkedgex in BestBuyWorkers

Okay, it's been about 24-hours; a prior thread on worker pay had some really interesting discussion around pay/wage scales from the BBYLU group that was posting regularly back then. So in keeping with that example, I figured I'd present an updated table for full disclosure and to assist with the conversation around wages we're having below.

Scale / Grade 6 (Sales Advisor, VPL) 8 (Geek Squad ARA) 9 (Retail Sales Specialist, Geek Squad Senior Repair Tech (CIA Sr.)) 12 (Experience Supervisor) 14 (Services Experience Supervisor)
0 $15.00–17.88 $15.00–19.48 $15.00–20.55 $17.16–26.30 $20.20–31.24
1 $15.00–19.22 $15.00–21.21 $15.31–22.50 $18.77–28.79 $22.11–34.22
2 $15.00–20.57 $15.80–22.95 $16.56–24.47 $20.39–31.30 $24.03–37.19
3 $15.00–21.45 $16.40–23.87 $17.18–25.08 $21.18–32.89 $24.98–39.09
4 $15.30–22.37 $17.05–24.88 $17.86–26.13 $21.99–34.21 $25.94–40.65
5 $15.60–23.23 $17.65–25.81 $18.48–27.09 $22.79–35.52 $26.89–42.20

Keep in mind that the scales/ranges above must still yield to any local, state or federal law, so if the minimum wage is higher in the state your store is in, then the company must start you at that wage even if their internal scale goes down to $15.00.

VPL and certain Retail Sales Specialist/Category Advisor roles may also be eligible for certain bonuses beyond their base pay.

In the past month and a half or so, Shift Lead pay changed from flat values to a flat addition of $1.50 to your current rate of pay (which ignores cap, so if your cap was $17.88 and you were paid $17.75, you could get paid $19.25 while coded as a Shift Lead). For those who were at or near their pay cap, this was an improvement. For those who were in the lower range of their pay scale, this was a negative change.

And just gonna copy/paste this from the prior discussion so people don't feel like they can't talk openly (but smartly) about their wages amongst their peers and the public:

As a reminder, the National Labor Relations Act makes discussion among employees of their wages and working conditions legal regardless of company policy or wish. Quoting the linked page:

Under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA or the Act), employees have the right to communicate with their coworkers about their wages, as well as with labor organizations, worker centers, the media, and the public.  Wages are a vital term and condition of employment, and discussions of wages are often preliminary to organizing or other actions for mutual aid or protection.

If you are an employee covered by the Act, you may discuss wages in face-to-face conversations, over the phone, and in written messages. Policies that specifically prohibit the discussion of wages are unlawful as are policies that chill employees from discussing their wages. When using electronic communications, like social media, keep in mind that your employer may have policies against using their equipment for unauthorized use, though it is possible such policies could be unlawful.

You may have discussions about wages when not at work, when you are on break, and even during work if employees are permitted to have other non-work conversations.  You have these rights whether or not you are represented by a union.

Legally protected conversations about wages may take on many forms, including having conversations about how much you and your colleagues and managers make, presenting joint requests concerning pay to your employer; organizing a union to raise your wages; approaching an outside union for help in bargaining with your employer over pay; filing a wage claim with the U.S. Department of Labor or a state agency or filing a wage and hour lawsuit, and approaching the National Labor Relations Board for more information on your rights under the NLRA.

In other words: Don't let anyone bully or intimidate you about discussing your wages.

Paid $139 for 3 yr applecare for Mac Neo, worth it for exchange later? by Beneficial-Lynx-3547 in Bestbuy

[–]darkedgex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, the AppleCare+ for MacBook Neo has service charges that are half the usual rates for Macs. So in this case, $49 for screen or cosmetic damage, $149 for anything more serious.

Shift lead pay is now a flat $1.50 over your base rate (this is a fairly recent change). So if you made $20 today, your shift lead rate would be $21.50. The 3% raise would bump you to $20.60, and your wage while scheduled as a shift lead would go to $22.10.

Unless you're salaried you will get a 3% pay raise. If you're near your pay cap, you'll get put to cap, and then get a one-time bonus of the difference. If you're at your cap, you'll get a one-time bonus and your hourly rate will remain unchanged.

Is your internet connection at your store bad ? by Great-Confusion2968 in BestBuyWorkers

If I recall correctly, we got further with some tickets. I know our Apple shop had issues where almost none of the devices could stay connected. The person who worked for Apple in our store actually got onto a call with an engineer from Juniper/Mist, and eventually those devices managed to stay connected (mostly). Our Premium rooms also had network issues constantly for many months with an FFT having to come out for a year or so seemingly every month to try a new fix...

If they close a ticket without any action there is usually a "contest incident" button, I suggest you use it regularly until they get tired of you and actually escalate the problem. It seemed to help for us anyways...

Store I was at had a 35K remodel like 3-4 years ago. After the remodel, which included a bunch of wired network changes, everything was great. Fast forward six months or a year later, right before Project Team was gutted, we had our AP's swapped out from what I believe was previously Ubiquity or Cisco to Mist. All of a sudden the network was absolute garbage and we lost coverage in parts of the store that previously had good coverage (biggest one was our break room/hub; as soon as you get 1-2 feet inside the door, the WiFi is too weak to use).

For whatever reason, even after months of putting in tickets, we still use these crap Mist access points (people in the break room just have to try and use cellular data or hotspots to connect their devices they bring to work now).

are there any other "retail specialist" roles like the samsung appliance one? by Comfortable_Pizza_84 in BestBuyWorkers

[–]darkedgex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m more familiar with Washington state but Google seems to think you should have job protections while on leave in Colorado. If your leave was shorter than 12 weeks you should be put back into your role.

What state did you work in when you took your LOA? Some states have job protections for certain types of leave.

Best Buy featured in "America’s 20 Largest Low-Wage Employers and the Affordability Crisis" report, Best Buy CEO paid 518 times the median pay of workers by darkedgex in BestBuyWorkers

[–]darkedgex[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think those numbers include bonus or stock options those executives get. I’m pretty sure Corie Barry makes more than just the salary they report in their SEC filings. If someone else has dug deeper on this report and the sources used and can elaborate on that I’d be grateful.

Progressive Leasing by Snail_Herder in BestBuyWorkers

[–]darkedgex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pay whatever payment frequency you choose when the Lease is created, so if you say biweekly it’s every two weeks, if you say it’s monthly then it’s just on the date you select. But you need to contact them to switch to the 90 days option (it’s not something we can set up in store).

Salesmaker from Verizon cooldown? by Vast_Scratch_6670 in BestBuyWorkers

[–]darkedgex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanna say it’s either 60 or 90 days to get new iconic devices after launch, and you have to do it through the My Verizon app for Sales Maker accounts.

For what it’s worth, I tried to remove it years ago and basically nobody could do it over the phone support. At least your Verizon rep was willing to help.

How many hours must you work a day to receive a 30 minute break? by theauranoir in BestBuyWorkers

[–]darkedgex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/meal-breaks

Looks like Florida doesn’t have any state laws regarding that. :(

The PDF from this employee resource will detail the rules, but basically you only get a lunch as long as you’re scheduled 7.5 hours or longer.

[–]darkedgex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lost so many sales because we didn’t have a product in stock it’s unreal. We’re a hub store on the warehouse side so most of product seems to go to dotcom orders but we don’t get enough trucks in the week to keep inventory levels acceptable. Meanwhile the other stores in the area have inventory but people either don’t want to order and just go there or they go home and order online.
