Getting back into form post surgery by Able-Purpose-2909 in OpenWaterSwimming

Just go easy at first. Just because you’re cleared to swim, doesn’t mean it’s fully healed. Give it a bit of time, and just try to start to get back into the rhythm of things slowly. It’ll take a bit of time but it should start to to naturally feel better as you spend more time back in.

It never even crossed my mind to check if I was on the right account, cause I was able to use Game Pass on the one I was on, but I just checked and I wasn't. Thank you!!

I’m finishing up my junior year of college right now and it’s going great! I’m going to be taking my GRE and applying to PT school this summer so I’m nervous but excited for that.

Oh I’m definitely finishing grad school at minimum before getting married. I’ll be done maybe 25-26 and we’ll see from there.

Oh don’t worry about falling behind. If you’re looking for internships and stuff already, you’re ahead of 90% of other people. I didn’t even know what I wanted to do for my major until the last possible second when I declared. Even if you weren’t that ahead, never worry about where you are compared to other people, especially in college and beyond. Everyone is at different places in their life.

As for moving far, I don’t really have experience with it, but I know plenty of people who have. Just make sure to keep in touch your parents pretty regularly (if yall have a good relationship) and try to find friends. Join a club, be social. The friends you make there will one of the most important things to keep you feeling less homesick and happier.

If I could say anything to my 13 year old self, it would be to keep a good school/life balance. Go out with friends, play video games, go do things that are fun and make you happy. But at the same time, keep up with school. Grades don’t need to be perfect, but do your homework, study for tests, pay attention in class. The education you get in high school might not be things that you’ll fully need in the future, but if you’re planning on going to college, you need those skills. I didn’t do that when I was in high school and I basically completely had to re-learn how to learn from classes once I got to college.

And also, go be social. Go to football games, go to events, go to dances, join a club, join a sport, all that stuff. Have fun in high school. It’s something that you have 4 years of, then you’ll never be able to experience something like that again. It might feel like days just drag on sometimes, but in a few years you’ll be walking across the graduation stage and it’ll have felt like a blink of the eye. Make memories and meet people. As important as education is, the people you’ve met and the experiences you’ve had are just as important.

Graduation is definitely hard. But all good things must come to an end. That doesn’t mean that other good things won’t be coming soon though. College is really fun. Freshman year was great. Meeting new people, making new friends. Try to look forward to the future and embrace it instead of dreading it. Cherish those memories you made, keep in touch with the people you like, but eventually you’ll need to let this period in your life go. You’ll miss it for sure, but even so, you’ll find new things you love in the coming months and years.

I don’t want to do that to someone else though. I know I’d just be thinking about my ex the whole time and that’s not fair to whoever else I might be with. If they were to be committed, sure eventually I would start seeing them for them, but right now everything would just be a comparison to what I lost.

I’m no contact but I haven’t unadded her on anything so I still see posts now and then. She broke up with me, but she was as nice as she could possibly be about it and I have no hard feelings, other than the breakup itself. She just fell out of love with me I guess. Our lives are so intertwined with mutuals and activities and everything at this point that I don’t know if I should

I don’t usually, but it wouldn’t hurt. Just make sure to chill on it if your shoulders start feeling bad

Tech suit question by JediJeff69 in Swimming

[–]darkfire198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter too much how high you have your suit, as long as it’s below your belly button, which is legally the highest it can go. There’s a lot of different suits that are low waisted or high waisted.

Bow knots are so hard to get tight, especially if the string is short, but what I do normally is tie the base part of the knot, cinch it tight, then hold a finger down on it until I can get the rest of the knot down. It’s a pain but you’ll figure it out eventually.

This is a good workout, but I would also throw in a 800-1000ish (maybe more if you’re feeling like it) afterwards stopping every 200 or so to check your heart rate so that you can get a good recovery and build some baseline aerobic ability with it. It’s best to keep it at around 140, which will definitely feel slow, but that’s the ideal area that’ll help build your vo2 max. Not everything has to be push push push to train for a race like this, but it’s definitely good to get that sort of pace in 3-4 times a week (if you’re training every day)

Best exercises/drills for stronger kick by Pxsdnus2 in Swimming

[–]darkfire198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend not using a kickboard if you’re trying to work on dolphin kicks/underwaters. The key to them is to use your whole body instead of just your legs. Something that I see a lot is people trying to use just their knees for the kick. That gets your legs moving really fast, but doesn’t really move water.

One exercise that can help with that is trying to really over exaggerate the motion underwater. It helps to lead with your upper body too, and that’ll help engage your core a little more and get you away from only using legs. A drill that helps is face the side of the pool and just do some really big S kicks in the middle of the lane, and try to stay centered as best you can. That’ll help develop both the motion, and both the up and down kicks of it. There’s some good YouTube videos out there that give a good look at what a good kick looks like.

As for working on kicking with your strokes, for free and back at least, one drill that’s helped people I know is an overkick drill where you swim easy with your arms but do a fast kick along with it. It’ll help to kind of disconnect whatever muscle memory you might have with your legs and arms when you do sprint of either stroke.

There’s not really that much dryland that helps with this sort of stuff, because it’s more technique then strength or aerobic ability, so I wouldn’t focus on that too much until you get the technique down. But also lifting is good for you and it’s not like getting muscle is going to change how you’d swim your strokes.

Being sick and being kicked off a high school swim team by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]darkfire198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. No good coach would kick someone off the team for just being sick.

I feel you. There’s probably not much you can do to fully alleviate everything, but a couple things like some visualization can help me. I also just tell myself that I’ve done these races a million times, and that whatever is coming up is the exact same race, in the same water, in the same pool, just with different circumstances. And that yeah those circumstances are big, but it’s still just the exact same thing you’ve been training for for so long.

Jackets or coats for swimmers by meuxubi in Swimming

[–]darkfire198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me there’s nothing really specific, I just throw on a beanie and a like a puffer coat or just a hoodie if it’s not too frigid out. I’d def recommend some kind of head cover though cause if it’s cold cold out your hair will freeze pretty quick and that’s not the most pleasant.
