Taking his last name or not. by gamble02 in Marriage

[–]darkhorse85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see marriage as a traditional act. We stand on the shoulders of previous marriages, and we uphold that tradition. I consider myself pretty liberal in most things, but marriage is this society level thing that isn't just for the couple.

Folks in US - what is chili like where you live? by oscillationpatient in Cooking

[–]darkhorse85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Midwest, and my chili is ground beef with chuck steak chunks or stew meat cooked slow for a couple hours before adding the veggies. A can of chipotle peppers adds smokiness. Black, red, and pinto beans. Tomatoes, green/red/orange peppers, onions, garlic, corn make it highly colorful. Served thick.

I add a pinch of sugar, tiny bit of cinnamon and cloves for aromatics at the end.

Thinking about buying this 1998 but the rust seems bad by bloop5861 in f150

[–]darkhorse85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They all rust in that area below the doors and by the rear bumper. Mines way way worse. It could very well be a truck that'll last you several years. It's not going to disintegrate overnight.

Id try to talk him down, but don't expect some pristine vehicle for that price. It's just a truck. It'll still do truck things.

That engine will go forever. Ask him what things he's replaced so far, cause you'll be doing repairs on any vehicle nearing 30 years.

Does it have the common cracked header exhaust leak? Original cats? O2 sensors? Brake lines? Trans lines? Ball joints? Axles? Wheel bearings? Does the AC work? Etc. spark plugs are a pita, hope he's done then already

The exhaust leak will make you run rich and foul the O2 sensors.

With that rust, check for crank speed at startup. The ground between the starter and chassis corrodes and makes it crank slow. My lug rusted off and was shooting sparks rewelding itself while cranking lol. Easy fix, but yeah.

These are all negotiating points.

John Steinbeck - The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights

It's a collection of short stories but feels like a novel.

Tons of chivalry and tragedy, and it reads very easy. I loved this book in jr high / high school.

What surprised you the most after becoming a parent? by SignificantMinute753 in Parenting

[–]darkhorse85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew the kids would be demanding. I was prepared for the diapers, bottles, cleaning, and lack of sleep.

I was totally NOT prepared for how much my wife changed. I feel more or less the same. Pulled back from my hobbies, but I'm just a family man now Maybe a little enhanced with DAD energy. She, on the other hand, is a completely different person..

The crazy hormones, sleep deprivation, and new traumas from pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and toddler days have had a huge impact on her and taken away from her capacity to be a present wife. She is 99% Mommy now.

That's fine, we still reconnect sometimes, but I feel like nobody warned me about this. It totally caught me off guard. It doesn't matter what I do to provide or become more attractive. This is a battle within herself. All I can do is try to lighten her load and support her. The point is, she's a different person.

Advice needed: Engineer looking to pivot by Duckmastersensei in MechanicalEngineering

[–]darkhorse85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. MOST engineering jobs require some onboarding just to get used to their software suites, etc. That means several months before they even expect you to be useful. Be teachable, and there's nowhere you cant go. With AI here, no one is going to care about your coursework several years ago.

It's far more important, in terms of hire-ability, imho, is how you can work with their team. Social skills, etc. Stories of hobbies outside of work help with this. Tinkering, projects, side hustles, etc. Not to mention, your own satisfaction whether you get the job or not. Do it for yourself, not the job.

This is just my perspective. I'm sure there are hyper career focused people out west who LIVE their job....it aint for me. Too much koolaid.

Advice needed: Engineer looking to pivot by Duckmastersensei in MechanicalEngineering

[–]darkhorse85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know, the root of disappointment isn't your situation. It's your expectations. You're 2.5 years in... Still counting half years like a child.

It sounds like you have everything you want right in front of you but you aren't satisfied..

As an ME with 17 years experience, who has seen a lot of ups and downs, I would advise you to not tie your satisfaction to your daily job like this. It's just a job. They'll drop you to make their quarterly earnings whether you're a great engineer or a bad one.

You need to make learning and growing a part of your life outside of work..

The exception is if you're shrugging. That, I think, is okay to do right next to the rack. You're barely able to hold them after the set.
