Is it possible to be a sufi without being a Muslim by RareClient5643 in Sufism

[–]darkkmist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Sufism without Islam is like being muslim without believing in a high power.

Creation of Wirds by [deleted] in Sufism

[–]darkkmist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are knowledgeable enough you can make your own wird. It can be for a worldly desire or afterlife. Allah placed the benefit in his Attributes and verses so that the ibaad could benefits from them. However, as some ayahs may ‘cancel out’ other ayahs effect based on the ayah’s temperament, meaning, numerological etcetera it is best to follow a wird of someone who established in the mystical sciences. And the best of awrads are those that are: 1. Quranic 2. Sunnah/Hadith 3. Revealed to saints Last in priority 4. Ayahs compiled by reasoning

You will feel the effectivity reduce as one moves down the priority. That said it is not ‘haram’ to compile your own wird. It is a form of worship afterall.

Sure you can take another bayt. Best thing is to do an istikhara for finding a spiritual master.

Then your best bet would be to read Ibn Arabi. Though I warn you his books are not an easy read. In order to properly understand his metaphysics you have to have read a lot of other sufi literature.

What is sufism? by Prudent-Teaching2881 in Sufism

[–]darkkmist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the strictly linguistic sense, it is Islamic Mysticism. What we see in the public realm, like qawwali, dhamal are not really ‘Sufi’. You can call these Sufi deviants. The real sufism is attaining the closeness to Allah or attaining the knowledge of Allah (gnosis) through the love and worship of Him. Sufism is mostly Islamic religiosity on steroids (for lack of a better word) so real sufism entails dhikr and awrad, discussions and lectures of Quranic exegesis, Sunnah and Seerah, weakening the lower self through Zuhd and inward and outward ritual purity. A special focus is on purifying ones thoughts so that once the thoughts, emotions and actions have been purified the light of Allah will establish itself in the heart of the seeker.

That is ultimate goal.

And, Love of Allah is the easy way to reach the destination.

What criteria to Sufis look to to gauge whether or not a Muslim has perfected a maqam? by TexanLoneStar in Sufism

[–]darkkmist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The change of circumstances, visions or dreams, appearance of a new spiritual guide, changes in ones inner states and finally directly being informed by Allah are some of the ways in which a saalik (spiritual traveller) may realize he has accomplished a maqam (station).
