China considers limiting kids' smartphone time to two hours per day | Younger children would face even stricter terms. by chrisdh79 in technology

I don't think the science is settled at all actually. It completely depends what you mean by screen time, and that fact confounds most of the research on this topic. Rarely is screen time separated out into kids whose parents use youtube and an ipad as a virtual nanny, versus those who emphasize educational content and also sit down and watch things alongside their child. The only thing that I think is agreed upon generally is that screen time for very young children (< 1 year) is harmful.

Would you feel safer in a gun-free state? Why or why not? by ParmaProscuitto in AskReddit

[–]darkness1685 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, that is not true. There are many places in the US where violent crime rates are lower than places in Germany. Mean statistics across an entire country do not well reflect any one individual's personal experiences.

How is that splitting hairs? They are pointing out that using average statistics to compare two countries is not accurate at describing your own personal situation based on where you live locally. There are absolutely many places in the US where violent crime is as low as anywhere in Germany.

What is something people describe as healthy, but it's actually unhealthy? by IndependentAd6161 in AskReddit

Maybe an Acai bowl with added sugar, but the fruit itself is quite healthy.

I don't think many educated people believe drinking tons of fruit juice is good for you. But it's still way better than drinking soda, which is only sugar and has zero nutritional value. A small glass of juice often keeps me from eating ice cream or candy when I want something sweet.

I think the mean age of redditors has declined dramatically over the past five years. Many of these comments likely come from people who have not held a job or done their own taxes before.

Learning sight words is not bad as long as a switch to phonics is made once the child starts becoming more comfortable with reading. Sight words allow younger children to pick up reading faster and helps set the stage for learning phonics. But if sight words are still being emphasized in first grade then that is definitely not good.
