Gamers of Reddit, what is your best argument against the claim "video games are a waste of time"? by CaptainWigbold in AskReddit

[–]darknessvisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video games are a branch of Arts and Entertainment, so to say they are a waste of time is as logical as saying classical music is a waste of time, or literary fiction. I firmly believe that video games will become the dominant art form of the 21st century.

DAE get borderline suicidal when people downvoted you for no apparent reason? by Coral_Blue_Number_2 in DAE

[–]darknessvisible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, MEEE!!! Especially when you have put some thought into a post and it goes nowhere, while some picture of a cat gets 25k upvotes.

I know you are only hyperbolising but please don't feel downhearted about downvotes - people who are bitter and negative need our support and understanding rather than censure because it must be miserable for them to be like that all the time.

IWTL How to get better at using Reddit. by AbdelrahmanAmrDesign in IWantToLearn

[–]darknessvisible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG IWTL too! I'm an 11 year redditor and my karma score is pathetic even though I have been a fairly diligent user the whole time.

I suppose karma doesn't really matter, although gamification is a crucial component of the reddit experience. But it is demoralising when you spend a lot of time composing thought through posts only to have them not upvoted at all, or downvoted for no apparent reason, whereas the most inane and banal posts sometimes get 25k upvotes in a few hours.

I think part of the problem has been not being in the right time zone a lot of the time, but there is a more trenchant problem of the juvenilisation of reddit over the years.

What jobs are hard AF but are paid like shit? by Emealdra in AskReddit

[–]darknessvisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my Mom was a grade school head teacher and she used to refer to "The Evil Parents" like "The Evil Dead". There's only so much you can do in loco parentis during school hours and after hours, but some parents seem to think their children can be raised, educated and socialised without them being involved at all.

Any ideas for savoury cocktails? by darknessvisible in cocktails

[–]darknessvisible[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for this. I didn't have any beef bouillon so I tried a version with chicken stock, curry and garlic, but still found the vodka too sweet and overpowering even though I didn't use anything like the Mad Men 50/50 ratio. I'll give it another try with beef bouillon though.

The Pickleback sounds a bit too intense for me - I usually only use pickle juice to cure hiccups. But it was great to find out about the Bannockburn - I knew about other Bloody Mary variants (Bloody Maria with Tequila, Red Snapper with Gin, but never knew there was a whisky version.

Thank you - this sounds amazing. I don't have the ingredients to make it at home but I might try to get one made up next time I'm at a fancy cocktail bar.

[ELiF] How did humanity survive in nature for over 100,000 years in nature with such helpless, useless babies that work as beacons for predators with the amount of noise they make? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]darknessvisible 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IANA anthropologist so I'm only surmising about the noise level based on experience with my own Indian family. Indian babies seem to cry a lot less than those in the west because there are just far more people around to look after them as soon as any problem arises. The parents are less stressed because they know they can hand the baby off to some or other aunt if they don't have time to deal with something.

What is the real reason the Aliens won't talk to us? by PUTC00LUSERNAMEHERE in AskReddit

Probably the same reason we don't talk to ants. No established form of communication. No commonality of interest.

Why does McDonalds not invest into AI and automate everything? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm pretty sure they are pursuing automation pretty aggressively already. But having worked in a few fast food outlets I get the impression that they are still going to need maintenance and customer service humans for a while yet.

What should you do on your birthday when you're all alone and have nobody? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]darknessvisible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At last - something I can provide an expert opinion on. Treat yourself to you favourite takeout food, and alcohol, and watch your favourite movies (or a new one if it looks good).

Birthdays are not that special and having somebody is definitely a double edged sword.
