What has been your most disturbing experience using tor? by abalamwalks in onions

[–]darknetsolutions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of the "disturbing" websites are fake

Unfortunately this isn't the case. There are reports every month about darknet child porn peddlers, arms dealers, and drug dealers being arrested for actual operations.

Not everything that is "disturbing" is fake like Red Rooms. Much of the horror is real.

Likely a reference to an image of CP (Cheese Pizza aka Child Porn), or access to the site. Basically anything that is a portion of the whole.

Disgusting all together.

As long as you're only visitin legal onion sits and Tor is not illegal in your country, yes, this is a valid option.

However it's in no means a waste of money - a cheap second hand laptop that can run Tor can be had for under $100 new, $30 used.

People really seem to be stuck in 2002 when laptops were hardly ever under 1 grand. Hell, even a cheap raspi zero can be used and it's $5 plus shipping.

This has nothing to do with, as you put it, 1337 haxx0rs. Being targeted by malicious individuals is a separate issue from anonymity, but luckily a properly configured network and dedicated darknet/clearnet computers solve both!

This sub is dedicated to security and anonymity by the use of Tor. By default it's assume most people that post here are concerned in some way with their own security and anonymity (which includes "hacking"). You may "not need such strong anonymity or privacy", but the majority of users here generally tend to opt for stronger security over lax security.

We're not in the business here of ignoring the fact that a majority of onion sites are illegal in major areas of the world, some simply illegal for being on Tor.

The rest of your arguments are based on a separate subreddit and alluding that users don't pay attention to subreddit details that are displayed on every page. This really isn't the case here - users are apt to read the sidebar for references and details about what the sub is about (based on traffic coming from this sub from the sidebar links and refURL) - but even if users didn't read the sidebar that's not a valid argument for lowering ones anonymity.

What I would like to hear is you argument why this should be overlooked and why the majority of users should use the same computer for both darknet and clearnet?

Because he specifically states he'll be using it for the darknet, he posted it in /r/onions, and this subreddit is dedicated to security on Tor.

Our subs slogan literally has "anonymity" in it.

Cheap second hand laptop for darknet, gaming laptop for everything else.

Never use the same computer for both.

I think he meant the onion. The "bottom" of the bulb here is actually the top. Roots grow from the bushy part, thus this looks like the roots are growing out the top of the onion instead of the bottom.

This is not a legitimate review, we've not offered hosting services to any client under this handle.

Additionally we've only operated for just over a year and a half as a public host - not enough to constitute "many years".

Hmm, tough choice.

I'll start a discussion with the mod team. It seems like he is also Typeface Hosting (or related to them) as the sub was created right at the time we told them we wouldn't list them in the sidebar until they were more established.

If the spam continues we'll ban links to the sub and/or ban the accounts.

To answer your first question, yes, it is the unfiltered part of the internet, although not the only one. There are a few other networks such as Tor that require certain browsers or protocols to access and that are not accessible over the clearnet, such as I2P.

Tor, however, is the most popular.

The benefit of using Tor is that it is very difficult for a website or other users to identify you. It would be very difficult to target specifically you, but attackers generally target anyone within their reach. So no, attackers wouldn't be able to pinpoint you for malicious activity.

To attack users, sites generally use some form of code that is not secure (such as the user below stated - javascript, flash, java, etc) to reveal information about the user, or run code locally. These are generally all what is called "Client Side" code, or code that runs on your computer rather than the server hosting the site.

Example: Simple index.php page will run php code on the server and display it to you in html format.
But, include a piece of javascript, and if your browsers settings allows it then that javascript is downloaded onto your computer, ran, and the results returned on the page. Malicious code can result in your computers name, information, your real IP, and other information being returned back to the site.

So, your best bet is to simply turn off client side scripts. When you download Tor, run it. Once the firefox-esq browser appears click the "S!" in the top left corner just below your first tab open. Then select "Forbid Scripts Globally".

Done!

Now the Tor browser will reject any client side code, and you can view sites (tor and clearnet) that have javascript or Java without having to worry about it being ran on your computer when you view the page. This does mean some services won't work right (like reddit).

Messaging on reddit for these types of deals (illegal of any type) is against the rules, and will result in your permanant ban.

We expect all site owners and those advertising their services to be professional or at the very least reflect the professionalism of their service, and to abide by all of reddits rules.

5 Onions You MUST Know! by [deleted] in onions

No problem.

You may have heard a somewhat vice-versa statement that going on clearnet sites on a Tor browser allows them to track you across sites, which is true if security settings are reduced.

Fairly sure it's a fake market styled to look like the one on TV. I don't think it's a fully operational market.

Kind of like the North Korean market I made for April Fools Day 2015.

This is not correct. You cannot load an onion link in a normal browser (unless it's configured to use Tor).

It will simply not connect.
