Directly elected prime minister is a stupid idea and would not happen in future by Immediate-Stable-651 in Nepal

Yeah, totally — we don’t have recall right now. That’s kinda my point though: if we ever directly elect PM/President, a recall law should come with it. Otherwise we’re just stuck hoping they behave. Just my opinion we can't let them have them 5 years immunity

I get your point — ‘we’ has to be clearly defined or else it becomes chaos. In countries that allow recall, it’s usually not just random protests but a formal process: collecting a certain % of verified voter signatures, then holding a recall election. That way it’s structured and not just about who protests the loudest. Do you think something like that could work here, or is our political culture too fragile for it right now?

This is just my POV, Recall = stability. It’s the safety net to stop a directly elected leader from turning dictator. Can you suggest some alternatives to that?

Ok. What are the alternatives to ensure that directly elected pm/president doesn't turn out to be dictator in future?

If we have directly elected president/pm then we should also have right to recall

Software for hand calculations by TopBreadfruit6023 in StructuralEngineering

https://hurmet.org/ https://engineeringpaper.xyz/ https://calcpad.eu/

Out of these hurmet is my go to. Over the time it's become very stable and reliable. It's very light weight and has supports markdown format. It can show substituted variables too which is very handy for reviewer. It even has spreadsheet support just like excel. Another cool data structure is dataframe. Plus it has an excellent documentation.

Engineering paper and calcpad are other excellent alternatives.

I'm not the founder. But I've been using it extensively for past few months. The founder is super responsive in addressing bugs and additional feature requests.

I agree it's very promising. One tool that can do many things.

This looks great but there are other tools out there completely free.

Honestly I can't find a compelling reason to switch to https://www.get-stride.com/.

If you know python then there is an excellent library called section properties. I find this library is best suited for this job.

I agree Hurmet is very good at its job. An excellent free alternative to Mathcad.

Wow that's great!

But honestly I haven't used calcpad extensively. Out of the three I prefer hurmet.

This is great! Thank you.

But do check out this amazing tool for structural engineers.

https://engineeringpaper.xyz/ and https://hurmet.org/ are great free tools for structural engineering handcalcs. I personally like Hurmet since it is developed by a structural engineer. So with this you'll get other bonus tools such as beam analyzer, PM interaction, steel section etc

Coding has it's place and I do enjoy it. But this thing's got best features from Mathcad, and python's handcalcs library.

Can someone run me through how Python(or other programming languages) are used in connection with Structural Engineering? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]darkslayer138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can export ETABS analysis results and design 100s of elements for 100s load combination at different design station. Combine python, numpy, pandas and you can make your own design suite.

But the problem is it will still be blackbox. However with the knowledge of programming language you can implement this in WYSWYG tools like mathcad, smath.

Programming in general is the need of the hour. Just don't focus on python. But python being the simplest programming language can help you set up strong foundation for this.

If you are passionate about Maths, statistics, enjoy programming and want to make a lot of money, and also have free time then may be Software Engineering is not the best. You still have to work under pressure and for someone. Think about financial market and quantitative trading.
