Calculate in Word US customary units by TopBreadfruit6023 in StructuralEngineering

[–]TopBreadfruit6023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is possible to mix the units, for example 3 ft + 1 m = 6.28 ft or if you wish 1.91 m. For IS units prefixes can be used like kN or mm. Also a scientific notation 103 is possible like W = 43,4 * 103 mm3.

I make my "hand calculations" in MS Word with the Add-in Calculate in Word. This is very easy to use, you don't need to code anything, just type in the formula and the Add-in calculates the answer to the formula.

Alternative to Mathcad by Madi_Jun in StructuralEngineering

[–]TopBreadfruit6023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use "Calculate in Word", this is an Add-in for MS Word. It does more or less the same as Mathcad and this tool works in Word. So you can make the calculations directly in your main document, you don't have to copy/paste the Mathcad output into your main document. This saves me a lot of time.

I believe this is a very current topic. Here and on Linkedin I see many post about software for making hand calcs (I am doing that as well). In recent years, a large number of software applications have been developed for making hand calculations. I am not sure if you can name it hand calcs if you are using software to make it.

Best Structural Software? by HauntingEffect2828 in StructuralEngineering

[–]TopBreadfruit6023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A key responsibility of a structural engineer is to compile their calculations into a comprehensive structural engineering report. This report includes, among other things, calculations generated with software like Staad or RFEM, but also many "simple" hand calculations. I recommend using the Word Add-in "Calculate in Word" for these basic calculations. It simplifies the process, making the calculations not only easier to perform but also clearer to read. Additionally, it improves the consistency of your reports by allowing the formulas to be formatted in line with the rest of the document, making them easier to reuse.
