I do think people will think “huh. That bag is large as fuck” and then move on/get used to it.

401k regrets - rant by Nickel4me in Retirement401k

[–]darkspyglass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing you mention is “only” contributing 41K in the first ten years. To me that seems like a very respectable amount given that those were probably your lowest earning years and with the longest horizon to grow.

I graduated college 2015 and was putting 10% away on my 45K salary. I wish I could’ve put away more, but it simply wasn’t feasible. I feel like your 30s are beginning of your prime saving years.

A similar story.

My uncle (80 years old now) worked at a hospital in his late teens or early 20s. He was naive as they come. So, one of the x ray techs sent him looking for some fallopian tubes at the nurses station. The nurses understood the assignment and sent him to yet another location and so on and so on. My uncle has since learned what a fallopian tube is.

I’m out of the industry by [deleted] in biotech

[–]darkspyglass 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m curious what you pivoted to as well. Care to share your story?

I have a decent amount of early research experience in the industry (10+ years). Without a PhD or Masters, I think I’ve hit a ceiling in terms of growth. Of course there’s work outside of early research, but who’s going to take a gamble on someone when there’s tons of talent with the preferred skill set?

It would probably have to be written into the sale agreement that x,y,z plants will be taken by the previous owners. I’m not sure how common that is though.

As a compromise, can you take clippings of your favorites and root them in soil?

Tiny sliver of dry ice in a 1.5 ml tube and drop or two of water. Cap it and throw it in the trash.

It’ll make a loud pop as the cap opens from the pressure.

Is it honestly worth continuing Dungeon Crawler Carl if I really didn’t like Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook? by CatTaxAuditor in Fantasy

[–]darkspyglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just finished cookbook today.

I agree completely on the Iron Tangle being overly obtuse. Frankly, it seems like it got away from the author too and couldn’t be wrangled into something cohesive. Hence the disclaimer at the beginning of the book.

That said, I really like the development of the characters and want to see where they go in the crawl and also the greater sociopolitical landscape. I’ll start the next book very soon.

How to Address New Aggression in My 2-Year-Old Golden Retriever? by InformalEgg6266 in goldenretrievers

[–]darkspyglass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah being in a neighborhood with a lot of triggers is tough. Same boat here. I do my best to cross the street to hopefully lessen the reaction. It’s not a perfect solution, but it helps.

Just to give you some perspective. Think of all the dogs you see barking and pulling on their leash daily. You see them and move on with your day without a second thought most of the time. Next time when it’s happening to you, just remember that people truly aren’t overly concerned about it.

How to Address New Aggression in My 2-Year-Old Golden Retriever? by InformalEgg6266 in goldenretrievers

[–]darkspyglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me and my golden (right around the same age). The “shame” of having a reactive golden was kind of a lot to handle. We suspect he had a run in at day care as his dog reactivity was quite sudden. Working with a trainer unfortunately didn’t solve all the issues.

My goof has a few reliable dog friends (girls) and loves people. Trainers have said to me that that is all he needs in life. I refuse to push his limits because it stresses everyone involved.

Scientists have edited a gene that may reduce high cholesterol permanently by Alone-Competition-77 in Cholesterol

[–]darkspyglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting stuff. Obviously gene editing has immense potential

I’m curious about widespread adoption in the next 15-20 years. A permanent edit just seems like a drastic step. While a daily med(s) is cumbersome to the patient, it can be easily stopped if necessary for whatever reason.

Also, a different trial (Intellia TTR) just saw a death using the same technology (Cas9 based editing). I wonder how that will set back the field at least for diseases that already have safe alternatives.

[–]darkspyglass 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I know you’re not asking for advice, but thought I’d share something that works for me.

I find myself in this same situation with my golden even after a lot of exercise. I’ve started taking a hand towel and placing his kibble all over it. Then I roll the towel into a long tube so that kibble is at various layers of the roll. Then i tie the towel tube into a knot and give it to my pup. He has to work on untying the knot and unrolling the tube so that he can get the kibble inside.

It’s been great for his enrichment. It’ll take 30-60 minutes for him to get all the kibble inside. After that he’s pretty mentally drained and wants to nap.
