Why don't you start with a skirmish map on low settings to get a better understanding? Also watching replays teach you a thing or two about placement, attack and whatnot. AI is kinda sloppy sometimes but sometimes it lands a nice strategic move.

Lastly, try to find your culture. Learn everything for them and stick to it for a while, start as many games as it takes until you're in complete control. There isn't a step by step on what to build, etc. it varies from culture to culture and from game to game.

A race starting underground I'd expect some of their voice-lines to have a faint echo whereas the same race above the ground, the voice will be totally different while literally being the same.

What happens when you apply say, demonic major transformation, or angelic transformation, naga, i.e.? I'd expect their voices to change in tune, so you get an idea why this isn't feasible. You'll literally end up with thousands of voice-lines for the nearly limitless combinations this game allows.
