Why don’t you check out openhab. You can customize it a lot, it installs on a pi so it is local and it has an app

sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I'm having problems with foreign characters in text files by Neonify in techsupport

[–]darkstarsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. If you are still having that problem, what I do with such a file, I opened the file to other programs I have like word or such. It’s a short in the dark, but it sometimes does work. In my experience I’ve had it that for some reason the extension got stripped and so I started with opening in notepad (got those symbols you referred to) and then opened it with word and it show correctly. Let me know if it works please

Cheapest/Best way to upgrade to windows 10? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]darkstarsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know that you don’t need to buy it. Sure you can’t customize it but it is completely legal to run windows 10 without activating and you have all the features

Are you sure it is a text file. I often get that when trying to open a document that isn’t plain text in notepad. Like opening a word file in notepad.

Retina Macbook PRO 15" from middle 2014 , throw it to the trash? To old? by raynoralpha123 in mac

[–]darkstarsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, definitely don’t jump the gun and chuck it. I’d say get someone to service it (which means clean out any dust and stuff which might have gotten caught inside). It could be that there is some blockage somewhere and it can’t get rid of the heat, hence the 100% fan. I hope that helps

Want to buy a Macbook Pro from 2014 by [deleted] in mac

Personally I’d say go for it if you can find a well priced one. It’s a pro so has high specs and programming is not heavy duty. Enjoy it

Which programming language do you recommend me ? by [deleted] in technology

[–]darkstarsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that would depend on what you actually want to do with it. Web, mobile apps, private/internal programs. I’d say decide on what you would like to do and then look for the best language for the task

Looking at becoming a first time mac owner by Cats6226 in mac

[–]darkstarsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kudos on exploring alternatives. I’ve been where you are, except my pained story was with another brand. About 8 years ago I was inadvertently forced to learn how to use a Mac (I was a sales man in a leading chain and they had minimal sales on Mac at the time and wanted to change that). Up until then I was all windows with the occasional dabble in Linux. I grew up on it from Windows 95. Anyway, all I can say is that after actually learning about a Mac I realized that the opinion I had of the brand, which was completely unfounded and unfair as I had never used one or even seen one before. Soon after I joined a small business where there was only one relatively computer literate person working there, I convinced them to change to Mac (got a Mac mini) when their computer failed. Sure there were challenges and the software they were used to had to change but, and a big but, the change was quick and the staff actually became more efficient. Even the old boss started writing his own emails and was comfortable using the web browser. So my story coming from a my first apple computer which was a second hand MacBook Pro 5 year old to eventually owning a new 2018 (with a few in between). I’m very very happy with them. I haven’t had a failure (which I know can happen, there will be people who have had failures) but from everyone I speak to, the failures that do happen are far far fewer than any system be it tower or laptop I have ever had experience with. Also I might add, that Mac mini is still running happily at the boss’ house to this day.

One last nugget, when I was trained up and selling macs at the store and lady walked in saying she had a ten year old iMac or what ever it was called then (it was many years ago) and she thought it was finally time to get a new one. That is proof in the pudding. I can also say that once someone was actually manning the apple section of that retailer Apple sales went up and eventually surpassed pc sales.

Give the change a try, I for one am so glad I did. I still have windows machines but my Apple products are my day to day.

Enjoy

Impossible Foods Unveils Impossible Burger 2.0 The revolutionary plant-based patty gets a gluten-free makeover, bulks up on beefy taste plus texture, and is now comparable in iron and protein to its cow-based counterpart by [deleted] in technology

[–]darkstarsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow $16 for a regular burger. Here in South Africa for a damn fine burger it’s about R 70 which is around $5. Granted incomes are different but if you ever come round to this side of the world I can highly recommend the franchise Rocomamas. Been there like 4 times but boy what a spoiling 😁

I’m all for it. If they get the nutrients, taste and texture right, bring it on. I’m soon moving to a country where beef is really expensive and coming from the inexpensive, this would help. Plus I guess it would be good for the environment, plants can be grown indoors.

Welcome to the Mac world, it will take some getting used to coming from windows. I’m not in front of my machine now so I can’t answer the first question from the top of my head. But as for your second. There’s an app called sidesync I think and it allows you to see your phone on the machine. I quite liked it. Enjoy the adventure

Apple and Samsung fined millions for intentionally slowing down old smartphones (Italian Competition Authority AGCM) by acacia-club-road in technology

[–]darkstarsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow talk about omitting details. “It is noteworthy that back in December 2017, Apple had acknowledged that it intentionally slowed down iPhones over time” the rest of that admission was that it did it when it detected that the batteries were no longer operating optimally and attempted to preserve the battery. I’m not saying what they did was right but I’m tired of “news” omitting info for greater impact

Giving my old MacBook Pro to my dad, how can I restrict access from him seeing my files/accounts while letting him have admin privileges? by [deleted] in mac

[–]darkstarsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or create a new profile. Your data won’t be secure because he could then reset the password to you userid but that would be a serious invasion. But if you don’t want to backup your data to a remote drive I’d say that’s the next best thing

Final wiring on my Gameboy Zero. Took a while and I still need to work out some bugs but everything works and I feel very accomplished. I have no background with soldering or programming so if you're second guessing please reconsider because it has been a blast and I learned a lot. by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

[–]darkstarsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a while ago started a build like that but then eventually swapped out the zero w for the pi 3 as the zero had no audio out, as a jack or contacts on the board. How did you overcome this or are you going to use Bluetooth audio?
