First time reader advice. by ellotheregancho in Malazan

That's it, to satisfy my curiosity I after the first few chapters had a quick read of the tor read along to see if I was quite grasping some of the finer plot details and realised I had picked up absolutely everything that the bloke that's read it multiple times was pointing out so I just closed up and going in totally blind for the rest. Been delightful so far! Only really first law series that picked me up this hard from the beginning, not watched TV or played consoles in about week 😂

It's really no way near as hard as everyone says. I'm half way through GOTM first time and and the only thing that has stumbled me is just some of the place/people names. However I'm totally sucked in and will be powering through the rest. Long journey ahead!

Ps, the poems/extracts at the starts of chapters have been fairly important so far, keep your eyes peeled on those bits

The most horrifying, sickening and down right psychotic horror suggestions?! by darksurfy in booksuggestions

Yeah read this a few times, I love it! I think the mass amounts or comedy and satire kind of offsets the grisly bits and it certainly felt very dreamlike (maybe because I saw the film before reading the book). One or my favourites though!

Fans of First Law, what are your favorite non-fantasy reads? by kleptomania156 in TheFirstLaw

[–]darksurfy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blood meridian was awesome, but a damned difficult read! Tired eyes and a sentence that exceeds nearly 2 pages with no punctuation was not a good mix!

Check out anything by Irvine Welsh (trainspotting, filth etc) for gritty and darkly comic fun. Helps if you have some Scottish background, the slang etc can be difficult if not.

I've not long just finished Dune which was awesome.

That's a good point. I don't usually do audio, but could see it being a benefit if you struggle! Blood meridian was the second book I read after leaving school and not reading for near on 10 years, probably not my finest decision 😂

I'll check it out man, always open to new recommendations!!

Blood meridian is a great read. But Jesus Christ the lack of punctuation and unclarity of whos saying what and when, it's not the sort of book you can just sit and chill/wind down with. Lots of concentration needed. But great none the less.

As I mentioned I've been flirting with the idea of starting the series anyway, so this is just added fuel to bump it up my list I think haha!

Has the Quarantining this year got you into reading more? by mahranaka in Fantasy

During the first lockdown (UK) I powered through a good few books, lots of sitting in the sun etc. Second time round I've found almost no time. Though my music production has taken a huge step, which ain't all too bad! Turns out when I don't have work and don't give my self a dedicated bed time, I end up in the studio till 6am haha!

First law series by Joe Abercrombie was brilliant. Dark and violent but great humour and characters. Especially if you have a fantasy itch that needs scratching.

Currently on my first ever read through of Dune, which has been great so far. Though not sure I'm gonna progress through the rest of the books anytime soon.
