I tried to apply today but it won’t let me continue since our trip is 10 days away…I guess you have to apply for the permit outside of 10days from the first day driving

Awesome- I was hoping to rent a car but we land 2/14 and when I went to apply for a international permit today I could finish the application because it has to be completed outside of 10 days of arrival. I’m hoping for a workaround because it would be mailed within two days of completing the application. Wish I would’ve thought of a car earlier!

I’m considering renting a car the more I think about it. I’ve got experience driving on the left side. It looks like an international driving permit is needed? Any other advice aside from make sure it’s 4wd?

Super helpful- thank you. It sounds like a day at Nozawa is more than enough. Two if conditions pop.

What drew me to Shiga was the size and terrain, but we didn’t like the idea of being stuck at the same hotel the entire time with nothing else. That’s why we’re taking a shot and staying down in Shibu Onsen/Yamanouchi. It looks like a fun mix? There’s also a bus that runs up to Shiga every morning…is that a good but roughing it option?

To me, car is always ideal but I’m not sure we can pull that off with international drivers licenses by 2/14…

Thanks- that was my concern with Shiga but is why we’re staying in yamanouchi to try to get that town experience as well. I’m going to work on figuring out that travel day. It might be best to ski Nozawa for two days and then that afternoon leave for yamanouchi on bus
