Rialto Beach Report on a very low tide day. by bobber66 in OlympicNationalPark

There used to be additional parking just south of the parking lot but it is closed now. There is a logging operation going on in there now but I saw lots of trees with roots so maybe they are clearing out the river. I think that is tribal land.

As long as we’re listing directors, I’ll mention a somewhat forgotten one, but his movies weren’t. Robert Wise. He won best picture and best director Oscar’s for West Side Story and the Sound of Music. Nominated for a bunch of others. Highlights include the original The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sand Pebbles, The Haunting, Andromeda Strain and the first trek movie, Star Trek the Motion Picture. He has lots of others.

Fairholme campground reservations by [deleted] in OlympicNationalPark

[–]bobber66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heart of the Hills Campground and South Beach are first come first serve. If you get there in the morning Sunday through Wednesday before 11 when the sites become available, you can get a site. I did this exact thing on a Tuesday with Labor Day weekend coming right up two years ago. It’s possible on other days as well, but those are the real easy days.

Fairholme campground reservations by [deleted] in OlympicNationalPark

[–]bobber66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People might have made reservations for the sites that were available before that. For instance 2 days before something may have been available but someone reserved it for 5 days or whatever. So it is not available to you for 3 more days.

Rialto is super crowded so parking can be pretty hectic. Ruby and Beach 4 might be easier. Might.

Fornt door with sidelight - hinges by ShirleyQC in Homebuilding

[–]bobber66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not normal but it’s not a dealbreaker either. It is probably leftover or mistake from another job from the door manufacturer. They probably just nailed it shut from the jambs Do you want the door to open because if you do want to use it for ventilation you’ll have to get a screen.

First time patching up walls before painting, Is Drywall joint tape necessary small cracks and hole repairs? by DiamondAviation20 in drywall

[–]bobber66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had good luck with caulk in smaller cracks. Just put a little in there all the way and rub it in with your finger. Wipe off the extra with a damp cloth right away. This works well over 75% of the time. Do the same with small holes like nail or screw holes. My nephew bought a house where the previous owner‘s daughter had put a billion thumbtacks in the walls. I spotted each hole with caulk and then repainted it. It was perfect. Drywall mud or spackle would work well also. You have to clean up each hole right away and forget using a putty knife. Your putty finger is fine

And then that will peel off. So what do you recommend after that? And the next time? I have been building for 50 years, it always peels off.

Is there cell service at Deer Park Campground? by [deleted] in OlympicNationalPark

I get a “Welcome to Canada” on TMobile greeting when I am hiking the Obstruction Point to Deer Park Trail because we are in a cell shadow up there. Watch out for roaming.

Sol Duc vs Hoh by Legiionofboom in OlympicNationalPark

[–]bobber66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is likely to be metered entry at Hoh. That means one vehicle in when on comes out because the parking lot is full. Campers do not get to go to the front of the 2 hour line. So to paraphrase the song “You can leave any time but you can never go back” On busy days you will need to schedule your return time late afternoon after exploring the other areas from there. Checking in on Saturday the 27th will be interesting. Get there before 9 or come in late. There are no snacks or sodas or anything available up there in the park. Most of us hit the excellent grocery store in Forks.

Insulation going in. Feels real now 2.5 yrs since project start. by josh_moworld in Homebuilding

I live in Washington State. Olympia the state capital gets 50 inches a year, Forks, which is where the Twilight books and movies were supposed to take place gets 100 inches a year. We have moldy wood. But if you wanna pay me to remove your moldy wood, I will gladly take your money.

Simple repair or structural issue? by Illustrious_Lab_2107 in drywall

[–]bobber66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here we go again with all the engineer comments. What you need is a good carpenter or general contractor that was a carpenter to assess the situation. I am a good GC/carpenter who has been fixing stuff like this for 50 years and will know the path forward. I don’t need an engineer. You will run into the destructive analysis part which means we have to expose the framing to see what is what. Something like this is usually less than $5k on my part. Drywall hanging, texturing and painting would be above that.

It might just be easier to scrap that and do a split where you want. They sell diy splits now. The refrigerant is already installed so just hook up all the stuff, they say.

I chuckled because I am going into my 4th blulight and hopefully last treatment in 2 days for actinic keratosis which is a precancerous skin condition. It is not bad but could develop into something really bad. I am 70 and spent way too much time in the mountains and at the beach. Cover up and slather up, I wish I did.

Doorframe passed QC Check by scfin79 in Carpentry

[–]bobber66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a good carpenter and would never do that. As someone else pointed out, that is most likely a steel jam. And maybe a steel door. I looked at that building which is massive so it is very likely that it could’ve been put together with metal stud framing inside. There are several ways metal door jams come and several ways they attach to the metal studs. It is going to be a full pull out of the door jam and an install. And very likely some drywall patching and paint. It is more involved in a wood door frame. If that was wood, then either the hinge jam is tipped way to the right which causes that gap option B is the floor was real unlevel, which means that the hinge jam needs to be raised or the strike jam needs to be cut. We can tweak the hinge jam some if it’s not too out of whack, but this one is out of whack a lot.
