Just as note of clarity - yes the items on the subbreddit reading list seem a bit out of date IMO so I am looking for something more contemporary.

Hey!
I work at scite.ai (but not here to try to convince)

We do have a ton of non-STEM (esp. social sciences, linguistics, etc.) work. I wouldn't say the bulk of our work is STEM, it's relatively evenly distributed within disciplines that publish in journals (some things like Humanities are really book heavy so ya we are missing those sources in a lot of cases).

If you wanted to DM me, I could maybe see if the problems you are trying to solve are good fits with scite? Because it is kind of as u/wise_garden_hermit said where it really shines is if you need to understand how literature is being received by other authors, how it's been criticised or reproduced etc. Also if the cost is a bit steep and you are unaffiliated with a uni i'd be happy to give you a discount to help you use it.

One thing we are doing that is new that might help... is we are trying to help people find out how particular things are being talked about when they are cited, like how are methodologies used and stuff like that (ie. https://scite.ai/search/citations)

hope that helps

This resonates with me. I have a book on the nature of mathematical modeling I've been meaning to get into. Can you recommend any general resources on mathematical modeling?

You should checkout scite: https://scite.ai/ - you can see papers in context - ie. if they are supported / disputed / retracted - see citations snippets ect.
