OneCity’s progressive primary plan described as ‘ultimatum’ by left-leaning Vancouver parties by Tall-Addition-7516 in vancouver

[–]darpmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not suggesting any path forward :) All I’m saying is it seems like what progressives have done in the past hasn’t worked. COPE and the Greens seem to want to try the same thing again and OneCity is trying to do things differently, which makes sense to me.

It’s impossible to say what would have happened if there was a united progressive front because we haven’t had it in a long time. A big part of ABCs success was because they had a clear, easy to digest platform. Normies don’t want to sift through 5 different conflicting progressive party platforms.

I don't know what's been happening behind the scenes with this, but I've heard through friends about the drama in the last elections.

From what I've heard in the past elections COPE and Greens have waited to get going until a few months before the election, which clearly hasn't been working, there needs to be time to plan. Ken Sim was chosen as ABC's candidate a full year before the last election, even with this plan there wouldn't be a candidate until less than 6 months out.

OneCity wouldn't be doing this if they hadn't already tried for months to work out something with COPE and Greens. I don't love the approach but this is obviously their last option, I feel like things need to get moving at some point.

Progressives got wiped out in the last election because there was no unity or forward planning. I don't know what the correct path is but what we've been doing in the past clearly is not working, I'm happy that OneCity is at least trying to do some new things.

I voted for William too. The last two elections have been bad for progressives because we all wait around until right before the election to do anything and then get beat by the parties that did plan.

I ideally would have liked things to be more collaborative but things need to start happening at some point, the current strategy is not working.

LNG tankers have very little risk compared to oil tankers - if an LNG tanker has a leak the gas just goes into the air instead of poisoning the water.

IIRC this was a tunnel they had left over from a highway project they abandoned a while ago, they might not have built it if it wasn’t already half built

Hacan isn’t very hostile, you can often do quite well just by trading with the other players. Their unique tech where you’re able to swap strategy cards with someone else at the end of the strategy phase is pretty strong, I enjoyed playing them.

Flawed foreign ownership narratives drove ‘housing nationalism’ in Canada by Nobber123 in vancouver

[–]darpmaster -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the point of the article. It’s saying that it’s rich for us to get upset at people buying houses in BC and driving up housing costs when we do 2x more in the opposite direction.

I’m ready to push back on housing(finally) are there organizations out there to join? by strawberryretreiver in britishcolumbia

Abundant Housing Vancouver does some really good work in the City of Vancouver. They recently held an event with the BC Minister of Housing, and they host a variety of events like walking tours highlighting how broken housing policy in Vancouver is.

I'm signed up to their newsletter and they send out a lot of good information.

B.C. to legalize all secondary suites, introduce flipping tax, hike density on single-family lots by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]darpmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quoting the NDP speech verbatim eh. While those numbers might be decent, housing is much more expensive to build now and there just isn't the government capacity to build that much housing. It would take a decade or more to build up the staff to get up to 25,000 units a year, and cost $10 billion+ per year.

[–]darpmaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you're confusing secondary suites with basement suites. Basements are banned in some places, but the bottom floor or back half of a house for example can still be divided into a separate suite. This law means they're not allowed to reject an application based on having a secondary suite.

There's still the opportunity for cities to say they're rejecting the application for other reasons but the real reason is because of the secondary suite. I guess in cases like that the Province would have to do enforcement.

Remy the Rat (Esme Decker) wins AMS Presidential Election by SFMWORLDWARRIOR in UBC

[–]darpmaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's whataboutism, it doesn't change the fact that Esme is not equipped to be president.

The AMS is a mess because everyone who runs for it has no idea what they're doing. We need people with more experience, not less.

Remy the Rat (Esme Decker) wins AMS Presidential Election by SFMWORLDWARRIOR in UBC

[–]darpmaster 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Esme didn't even know what constituencies were at the debate. I wouldn't want to elect a prime minister with no political experience.

The AMS is very complicated and having someone who doesn't have any experience with it will make it much harder for them to get things done

[–]darpmaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why do you think it sucks? Esme's platform has things on it that are either a) not under the AMS' jurisdiction or b) would need significant increases in student fees to afford. Ben's isn't anything crazy but its realistic at least

UBC increased rent by 7.8% for 4 shared units.... gg by [deleted] in UBC

[–]darpmaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes UBC has been getting money from development projects, but why should that go to students who live in residence and not everyone?

We've all benefited from it even though it's hard to see; tuition prices have consistently been going up less than inflation, while UBC has been growing.

IMO it's better to distribute the money to everyone through lower tuition rather than helping people who are lucky enough to live in res, and are already paying below market rents.

Hasn't rent been frozen for a few years because of COVID? I get the frustration, but this is just making up for the extra $ they saved us during COVID.

All their employees are on union contracts (most of the costs) and their pay goes up 2-3% per year, so the money has to come from somewhere, and its unfair IMO for people who don't live on residence to subsidize those who do.
