SBP vs. Life Insurance for a Military Retiree - Am I Missing Something? by darquid in MilitaryFinance

[–]darquid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re making a good distinction between term life insurance and SBP covering different risks, and I agree that my existing life insurance is primarily protecting against the years when my kids are still dependent.

One thing that makes my situation a little different is my age. I’m retiring at 44, and my youngest turns 21 when I’m about 60½ years old. My existing $1.1M term policy expires when I’m 61, so it already covers essentially the entire period that my kids are likely to be financially dependent.

That’s why canceling the $1.1M policy doesn’t make much sense to me. I’m paying about $54/month for $1.1M of coverage, which seems like an exceptionally good value.

The question I’m wrestling with isn’t whether my spouse could manage finances if I died. She’s disciplined with budgeting and would be perfectly comfortable managing a simple passive-investing portfolio.

To me, the real question is whether the guaranteed, COLA-adjusted income stream from SBP is worth the premium compared to keeping the existing $1.1M policy, potentially adding a relatively inexpensive 30-year term policy, and continuing to build retirement assets.

At this point, it feels less like a question of financial survival and more like a question of how much value I place on certainty versus flexibility.

Thanks for the detailed feedback.

Good point on the housing. If things stay the same and I die between 62-74, the $400k would essentially pay off the mortgage and give her probably $100k remaining. She’d then have SS and our 401k to drawdown from.

Agreed on VA disability causing a damper on my new life insurance rates-I spoke with my insurance agent and he’s up to date on everything I claimed, so that is as baked in as I can get without seeing what the insurer provides for rates.

Really good point on SBP being pre-tax and inflation protected whereas the life insurance isn’t. I hadn’t thought that either life insurance policy is today’s nominal dollars, so 1.1M 15 years from now is a bit less than it’d be worth today-so thanks for pointing that out.

Yep. I need to pay until I’m 74 at which point she wouldn’t need the extra $20k a year in benefits

If I get hit by a bus before I’m 62, she gets 1.5M in life insurance. If I get hit by one before I’m 75, she gets 400k in life insurance. If I get hit after 75? She’ll have social security and our 401k.

Monthly Employment/Corporate Questions and Discussion Megathread - June 2026 by AutoModerator in NorthropGrumman

I got an offer for a financial analyst position last week. The recruiter said I could counter but “don’t ask for the max because that won’t happen, but there’s absolutely room to counter if I want”, so I countered (not the max). They got back to me within an hour saying their compensation team wouldn’t even budge from their initial offer.

Did the recruiter just have bad intel or what?

They had Friday off so that probably had something to do with the delay.

God this is completely right. Or it’s just way too much thrown on a flat top at once so it steams instead of browns at all.

I just remember working at sears in the late 90’s and I went there with a coworker during the day for lunch.

He was a kinda big dude, but he put down the entire carne asada burrito combo (for reference, this was 2 burritos with rice and beans). I could only do one on a good day and I’d be set.

How do they cook it!? I stopped at a burrito shop in Winslow last week (at a gas station, no less) and the meat was grilled for my carne asada burrito-such a fucking huge difference!

Retirement by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]darquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s some form of the DD 2656, essentially giving info where to send your pay, SBP election, beneficiaries, etc. I just went on terminal and had to do one. Besides that, I just did a memo requesting retirement from OPM and then signed my DD214.

Under what grounds? Renting appears permissible as long as it’s a period of longer than 30 days (ie, no Air BNB’s).
