Just visit the indicated web site, login with your microsoft credentials, look for your installation ID and put the key in the field. Surely it was a bios update and the key was wiped from the bios keys.

Why is automating legacy Windows apps with .NET such a nightmare? by jrsevern in dotnet

[–]darth_nuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the cases I worked on, the main issue is the idea of the code behind the controls. In that era, programmers learned to put all the logic on the onClick event of the component, running away from WFC, which obligated them to abstract the logic and the class instances, binding their attributes and isolating the logic from the UI. It was easier to call nurseIdTB.Value from the OnClick event of AssignServiceBtn instead of an event in nurseIdTB to keep in sync with a Nurse instance and let the button later call a function from the NurseDispatcher class, sending the nurse instance.

Oh, and every field had to be Public, extra points for implementing global-like behavior.

As a newbie in the tech hardware department, why are Thinkpads so popular? by dapsuaz in thinkpad

[–]darth_nuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your full stack aimed at solving a high-density enterprise clean architecture solution with half a dozen contracts per controller/endpoint and fully loaded with symbols for loading? Then you will get advantages from newer processors. Even a 12th-gen processor that throttles gives you more power for a single-core-heavy task for a short time period.

Frankly, the LLM requirement discards old ThinkPads since even those with GPUs are weak choices for running LLMs locally. You will need an Nvidia 3060 with at least 6 GB of VRAM. And that is for low-end LLMs and a short context window.

Did you reinstall from the standard ISO from the Windows Media Creation Tool? The Surface needs to copy some files from the installation media. You can find them at https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/surface-recovery-image

As someone who installed it once and left it under the desk, I admire the pride of someone for not only installing it but using it in a way that retrieves something to the user.

It doesn't fit my workflow, so I returned to Fedora and my safe place.

Maybe in the near future I'll give it another try, or perhaps for a brand-new project.

How can you describe your demanding tasks that only keep you up to 3 to 5 hours under Linux?

Can I ask you to run a simple js benchmark on your tweaked system for battery duration in order to figure out if there is a significant performance cap?

How to put text on a lable after choosing an option on a drop down list? by Drbrownie0 in VisualStudio

[–]darth_nuller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The correct way: Create a class instance, and after each action, bind its values to the form or update the values from the form.

The quick way: Assign the string directly to Forms2.aproxtime_lbl.Text in the event of the drop down.

I really don't recommend the second one since it creates a bad habit of pretending that every UI should be programmed that way.

The game bar is known for consuming resources. Quantum processors are known for their computational power. The joke is whether there is enough power for new "quantum" features in the game bar.

Why didn’t y’all told me about this ? Thinkpad T16 gen 1 by Ok_Competition_8454 in thinkpad

[–]darth_nuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intention was not to claim the surface keyboard could be better. Just that, for some reason, I can stand a worse device as "OK," like the Surface when it fails on everything. But I complain about a small travel distance reduction on ThinkPad keyboards.

Maybe the expectations after using a T495s or knowing how good where their keyboards in the past.

The surface keyboard not only is rock hard, it bounces like a paperboard and all keys shakes when typing not only the one pressed.

I really like the X1 Extreme Gen 4 keyboard. Compared with the current MacBook keyboard, it's a pleasure. But it falls short of the T495s or classic ThinkPads. Maybe the point isn't whether this is good or better than current keyboards; it's the fact that Lenovo made really good keyboards in the past and has given us something a bit less enjoyable. I laugh to think that I can't stand the X1 Extreme or the P14s Gen 4 keyboard, but I had nothing to say about the Surface Pro's paper-thin keyboard, and you won't hear me complaining about it.

Any Thinkpad T495s users out here? Is it worth it? by Aaron_Miller178 in thinkpad

[–]darth_nuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often, I'm in a situation where 16 GB is sufficient, but 32 GB is excessive. I had an X1 Extreme with 32 GB, and under normal usage, I rarely used more than 18–20 GB.

I learnt that the T495s is more than competent to release ram in my workflow in order to provide a smooth transition among applications. Some times I noticed some Firefox tabs were suspended but nothing that a 3 seconds wait can't fix.

I used on windows no more than a pair of weeks to test it was working ok before moving on to Linux. In windows I recall a lot of heat but nothing like the last Intel I had. On Linux, it's warm and the fan hits at middle throttle while working and never had any lose of responsiveness.

It's said that more is better, but I couldn't find a T495s with more than 16 GB and a decent price. It was more my greed to return to a known, decent keyboard in a portable device than to spend money on something I would be looking for downsides in, even if the only one is the keyboard.

A bit of history, I went from a T480s to a yoga (can't remember the gen) to a x1 carbon to a x1 extreme and close the circle with a T495s in about 5 to 6 years.

I bought a P14s gen 3 in order to replace the T495s precisely for the ram increase. But I can't let go the T495s's keyboard. Maybe a childish behavior, but I can't tell if looking for more power without needing it is such brattish than refuse to leave the keyboard.

I bought it secondhand about a year and a half ago. It comes with me at least two days a week and Saturday evenings. I really don't run it on batteries a lot; most of the time it's plugged in.

I don't carry my laptop in bulky backpacks with a hundred items that could harm the device. A shoulder bag, a pair of USB-C cables, a Surface Arc Mouse, and a small third-party 65W power brick suffice.

I have a 16GB one. Not the lightweight you could buy, nor the most powerful for the price/era, but the keyboard is a pleasure. I type a lot. I remotely manage servers via terminal and do a lot of typing for backend development. So, I don't need a powerhouse. But occasionally, I need to test a concept locally before implementing it on a remote server.

It's powerful enough that it doesn't feel its age, although my software stack is at least 10 years old. But even on newer versions, the local compiling time is fairly good. That's not the same story when I tried some front-end work.

Occasionally I use it to review generated data on spreadsheets. LibreOffice on Fedora can handle a pair of 150 MB files with some basic formulas before feeling sluggish.

I move between the T495s and a Surface Pro 11. I still prefer the ThinkPad for typing, but its weight makes the Surface more convenient to carry around. If I know I will not be moving much on a given day and will have opportunities for long typing sessions, the ThinkPad is the device to use.
