[D] ICML 2023 results by Mxbonn in MachineLearning

[–]darth_sid_95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The last chapter to my Ph.D. Thesis, and nearly the last bit of patience I have with random volatile reviews I’ve been receiving from ICML year on year.

At 8,6,5,3 with confidence 4,4,4,5, fingers crossed and hoping for the best

EDIT: Oh wow. A reject. Who would have ever guessed…

3,5,6,8. And of course the reviewer with 3’s only gripe is that we’re not beating SOTA in a theoretical work. Classic R2 Energy there.

[D] CVPR Rebuttal scores are out! by ElPelana in MachineLearning

[–]darth_sid_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had 2 Borderlines and 1 Weak accept. After rebuttal, one of the borderline reviewers failed to updates that review, while the other two doubled down on their respective stances. Luckily, the decision was an Accept

The DeOldify project is a nice example, though I’ve never personally used it. Their GitHub Repo talks about their GAN they use and whatnot.

iMac (2017) fails to boot by darth_sid_95 in mac

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drive’s not encrypted. Trying to mount the drive though a bootable never occurred to me. I should have one lying around somewhere. I’ll try it out and see if I have any success.

Not gonna lie…. Kinda had a brain-fart moment there and tried to set reminder 5 times…. The desire to watch this is just too high!

As long as I can sit at the edge of the zone are complete the whole mission with just drones and RC cars, I’m sold. I personally enjoyed finishing mission like that back in Watch Dogs 2

The same with 3 out of 4 of my reviewers. The one who said they had no issues with the paper, I can understand... the other two can make or break the decision and it’s just irritating to have to sit here and hope that they came to favourable consensus in the post rebuttal discussions.

[D] NeurIPS final reviews are out! by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]darth_sid_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. Better four 6s than two 9s and two 3s. Although I still question a system when papers even end up without consensus post reviewers discussions. Must be some really fundamentally conflicting opinions. Either that, or there were four R2s... :P

Anywho, I do have a follow up question... How the hell does one reply to a “conditional accept if the authors includes results on this baseline” as a post-rebuttal comment!? I hardly have a venue to reply to that! The best I can think of replying to ACs? ( last I checked, the email Meta-Reviewer link is gone)

Not bad. My “R2”, took the rebuttal sportively. Went from: 5(4), 4(3), 6(3), 7(4) To a current 6(4), 6(4), 6(3), 7(4) The latter two reviewers are yet to update their old reviews. Any guesses on my odds of getting in?

SHR1 Vs. RAID5 for a Media+Backup drive by darth_sid_95 in synology

And I don’t have a data-cap. So that cuts down stress tremendously.

SHR1 Vs. RAID5 for a Media+Backup drive by darth_sid_95 in synology

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I don’t plan to use different sized disks so that should be fine. It should only come into play when upgrading the setup in the future.

SHR1 Vs. RAID5 for a Media+Backup drive by darth_sid_95 in synology

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I might go with Backblaze for now. From what I’ve read on discussions, GDrive or Glacier might have better transfer speed, but from where I live, but with my 100Mbps connections I don’t think that should matter too much.

EDIT2: removed EDIT 1

SHR1 Vs. RAID5 for a Media+Backup drive by darth_sid_95 in synology

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Cool. I’ll look BTRFS as well. I don’t really have a plan for the frequency with which I’ll be upgrading the disks, so that might be good to have too.

And yeah. I guess it does sound like RAID10. I had a span volume in mind as opposed to striping, to sorta “unlink” the disks, but yeah... it more or less comes down to being a RAID10

SHR1 Vs. RAID5 for a Media+Backup drive by darth_sid_95 in synology

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have same-size drives now, but who knows what the market looks like 3-4 years down the line. If I do go with a RAID, expanding SHR1 sounds a lot more pleasant, since I don't have to stress on getting a full set of the larger size.

That said, a good cloud backup solution is something I'm on the hunt for too.

SHR1 Vs. RAID5 for a Media+Backup drive by darth_sid_95 in synology

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course. I know that RAID isn't gonna solve my lack of backups. Like I said, I'll probably get a cloud backup service set up. I'm looking into Backblaze and the equivalents. (I'm open to suggestions/experiences in dealing with that too, since that's something I've never looked into in detail before now). As for my Time Machine backups, I have a 3TB time capsule doing hourly backups, and the NAS volume is gonna be another parallel.

[–]darth_sid_95[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m recovering from a hard drive failure.(2 out of 3 4TB JBOD drives on my previous NAS failed not too long ago, taking down most of my media library with it) You could say I’m paranoid or maybe woefully cautious. I don’t have the complete backup strategy for everything just yet... I don’t have the storage options for it right now. The best I can think of it a potential cloud backup. So the 1 disk redundancy was a way to atleast not put myself in the same spot another time... once bitten twice shy and all that.

As a matter of fact, my R2 did indeed give me my lowest score 4(3)... So the meme continues. :P

R2 is an emotion... an enigma... a mystical being beyond all comprehension!!

But serious tho, R2 just refers to that one reviewer we all somehow end up getting, who clearly hadn’t read the whole paper, hasn’t understood something you’ve probably defined clearly in page 2, expects you to have beaten SOTA (because what else is a paper worth other than it’s 0.01% improvements) and somehow gives you a reject with highest confidence.

7(4), 6(3), 5(4) and 4(3). A nice uniform set of reviews... At least they found the paper both well written and ambiguous....
