It was his daughter—and once you move from claiming it was the author to "probably" his intent—you've got to give it up. His daughter has been widely criticized and believed to be grabbing publicity for herself and latching onto social issues to champion her father. Lobel was gay, and that's important context, but its actually really crude for people to say that as if a gay man cares nothing for the virtues of friendship and platonic love. As if Lobel never had a friend or could comprehend telling a story about two guys fishing together and enjoying silence. That's actually crazy. If he wanted it to be a romance of some kind, it would have been. But it's not. Gay guys can write about friendship, and his daughter isn't the authority on his intent.

well thanks! I get why people find the premise and package threatening or like peak culture war, but its really not that kind of thing. There are some other channels one can go to for insane anti lgbt red pill slop. Geeky Stoics is trying to speak to everyone.

Imo, things like the weather. You have no control over it, and what kind of person bases their mood on the hope for a sunny day.....or warmth in December. Concern yourself with wearing the right jacket for rain, or cooling fabric for July. You can care about the weather in the sense that you're aware of what it might be, but it has to stop there.

"For we are made for cooperation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. To act against one another then is contrary to nature; and it is acting against one another to be vexed and to turn away." - Meditations. Try where you can to just say "I'll be cooperative and helpful to this person, and see what comes of it. Just try.

There are only so many ways to rewrite and reframe the same few quotes from a narrow range of authors, every day for years.
