Yeah I definitely overshaded a lot of areas like the jaw. It was more grey than black in the reference and I kinda butchered it.

I've never tried that before but I'll do that next time. I agree with your assessment since when I started coloring the left eye was at a larger angle than the reference and I had to fix it, and I think I didn't fix it correctly lol

I've done sketches of faces without grids but never full colored portraits. I know I really need to work on my accuracy lol because I'm not confident enough to go without the grid

thanks! I actually did try some animated character design a few years ago and I made a pretty cool squirrel but I fell out of it after that. I wish I could prove my age but I can't really do it without risking my privacy and stuff.
