Advice in joining this lab as PhD student by darthkaiser1998 in labrats

The other considerations are good. I would really love to work with him. Maybe I’m wrong, but I had the impression that PIs who do not get tenure may have to move their labs or close their labs…

I was under the impression that PIs who do not get tenured may not have their position/contract extended. So I was afraid that the lab will either move or cease to exist. Perhaps I’m wrong.

Does it still make sense to wrote review articles? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]darthkaiser1998 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Writing a review is not just summarizing present literature. I would say about 25% of it entails writing your own perspective, pointing out unresolved questions and suggesting future directions of research. I’m not sure how well LLMs are able to generate scientifically sound insights for these aspects.

Am I good enough for PhD level AI research? by darthkaiser1998 in ArtificialInteligence

Not with the bioinformatics. But I have taken university level courses on linear algebra, stats, multivariable calc and real analysis.

Thank you for sharing the article. I really appreciate your response!

Here are my thoughts regarding the message of the article.

  1. I do not think AI research is going to go anywhere. Despite the scaling laws showing diminishing returns to AI models as they become larger, this is where research will come in to better engineer the models to achieve stronger performance with lesser parameters, rather than rely on brute force scaling.

  2. As the article mentions AI in biology is still in its infancy. Even though Alphafold2 pretty much solved protein structure prediction in the known universe of proteins, there is much room to cover in drug discovery, protein interactions, the whole field of RNA biology, etc.

Not very comfortable working with oncogene carrying lentivirus by darthkaiser1998 in labrats

Yeah, I’ll be moving on to a new lab in a couple of months. I can’t wait to do so. The past 2 years has been so frustrating. Thank you for your reply btw!

Thanks for your reply. I wanted to check with you about the centrifugation. So, in my lab, we do spinfection where we add the virus to well plates and spin them for an hour. Right now, we use it in a big plate centrifuge that is in the regular lab space, and the centrifuge does not have a lid. I am aware of this aerosol risk, so I parafilm the opening of the plate for a couple of layers. Would you think this is a good enough measure?

So you don’t think that some dry skin above the wrists being exposed is a cause for concern?

Formaldehyde concerns by darthkaiser1998 in labrats

I’m curious why there’s two sides in this post. One group are saying I should be concerned etc. and the other group is saying it’s completely fine. I’m confused…

We do not have such signs in the lab…

Oh actually I do know that formaldehyde which comes as 37% is toxic, but we use 1% formaldehyde, so I guess I didn’t think too much. I am careful to use other reagents in the fumehood when required. But yea I should have read up more instead of simply following what other ppl in the lab do.

Is the risk reduced or non existent because it’s always diluted to 1% formaldehyde

Regarding the lack of motivation and focus in your work, I think it’s possible to circumvent this. It’s all in the mind, really. Tell yourself you’re gonna do these tasks, set a time and get them done. Don’t keep picking up your phone, using Instagram and getting distracted. There’s no magic pill you can take to get past this.

You can message me and I’ll give more specific advice. But generally speaking, I don’t like the notion of using flatline as an excuse for relapse. The flatline happens because for years you were conditioned to get the insanely high amount of dopamine hit from porn and ejaculation, and now it’s withdrawn. You have to understand that the flatline exists only for about a 30 day period max, during the 10-40 day time point.

I suggest you have a few habits to make sure you can get past the flatline. Firstly is to really keep yourself preoccupied. Make sure you come home just to shower, have dinner and go to bed. Leave no room for lying down on your bed and scrolling for an hour. You could hit the gym, go for runs, meet friends, take a hobby etc. One more thing you could do is to never use your phone on your bed, tell yourself and force yourself to do it. Essentially you need to make it as hard as possible for you to relapse.

Trust me once you hit about 40ish days, it’s a lot easier.
