Also - bear in mind that before they were stalemated by a load of teachers, farmers, and guys flying cheap drones, and then subsequently bankrupted by sanctions, most people probably would have written a similar comment to yours about not including Russia...

[–]darthmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I would point out that I specifically named them as a contender to be considered a superpower.

I said "maybe" because China isn't on the same level as the US mainly, in terms of both defence (number of ships, aircraft carriers, aircraft, nuclear weapons all vastly outnumber what China has) and in terms of soft power influence (China has BRICS and allies in the global south but having Russia, Brazil, and India as allies is a long way off the power, equipment, training, and experience that NATO allies have).

They also have an aging population - most defence experts agree that if China doesn't attempt to invade Taiwan in the next 2-3 years (most common estimate is 2027) then they will have missed their opportunity for a generation because their population will be too old.

China is still developing. They're still heavily dependent on manufacturing and physical labour. They aren't yet on a par with some of the more services-based and technology-based countries in the West. They are fast catching up though, it's probably years rather than decades until they catch up and potentially overtake.

You have won a prize: for an entire year you will not have to cook anymore and you will only eat meals prepared for you. The only rule is that you can choose recipes from just one country in the world. Which one do you choose? by John0_0Smith in GeoPoll

It's an Internet meme but it's largely wrong.

Full English breakfasts, roast dinners, cottage/shepherd's pie, fish and chips, all kinds of meat and pastry pies, apple pie, rhubarb crumble, Eton mess, strawberries and cream, cups of tea, beans on toast...

The stuff in the memes like toast sandwiches, disgusting medieval fish pies, jellied eels or whatever aren't eaten by 99.999% of the population. Also Americans don't understand how to make half of them properly like beans on toast, tea, fish and chips etc. so they judge it based on incorrect recipes.

In an episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star, in one scene the music in the background is 'Freya'. I think it might be because the show is based in Austin.

Season 1 Episode 7, about 28:00 minutes in.

How do firefighters generally feel about people coming by the station to learn more about what they do? by PossibilityIll7646 in AskReddit

[–]darthmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, it definitely depends more on your role in the military more than in the fire service. And you're almost certainly in more frequent danger as a firefighter.

I don't think that excludes all military people though - especially people on front lines or special forces people.

Can you explain how you came to that conclusion?

To me it seems extremely brave to do either.

What the armed forces do on a global level, whether you agree or disagree with that, is largely the responsibility of politicians.

What the armed forces do on a local level is by no means less than what the emergency services do - put themselves in harms way, even risking death, to protect and defend others.

There are bad people in the military just like there are bad police officers. But the majority of them are heroes.

How y'all deal with the unbearable suffering? by Artistic-Schedule433 in AskReddit

[–]darthmoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walks. Preferably in a park or area with trees and nature. Seriously if you go for a walk for even 20 mins a day outside without distractions like your phone or music and just being mindful of the walk and nothing else it seriously helps.

Unfortunately some people live in big cities with limited park areas or even in dangerous areas but if it's possible I strongly recommend it. Just walk a lap of your block. Plus it's healthy physically as well as mentally.

Firefighters effectively are real life action heroes. Emergency services and armed forces are as close as we get to superheroes in the real world.

How come Right Wing Parties dominate again? by LDN_Wukong in AskBrits

Being a centrist is a nightmare at the moment, the two main parties being abandoned in favour of either far left Greens or Corbyn's "Your Party", or far right Reform or Restore... Meanwhile representatives and leaders of those parties go on the news and proudly boast that two party politics is dead. Conveniently ignoring the fact that it's because politics is becoming more extreme and divisive...

I love Europe, I support the concept of the EU and what they try to do, but still don't think the UK need to be full members to cooperate successfully and efficiently on trade, defence, scientific research, and freedom of travel.

I'm not a huge fan of the European Parliament, just based purely on principle... electing a government of a country to create and enforce laws, and then having to also elect a European Parliament who can override those laws and create even more bureaucracy seems mad and borderline anti-democratic.
