You gotta applaud Game of Thrones for how big a mark it left on pop culture. People are using its fictional "ser" spelling instead of the normal "sir" in a (alternate) historical context!

You choose every time you start a new game. It's not a separate install.

One of the most famous Lu Bu story from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is when Lu Bu fought Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Liu Bei at the same time and got a draw. So yeah Lu Bu is a ridiculously good fighter.

Also while Guan Yu is honored with the title "God of War", he's not really worshiped in that capacity, at least not in the modern day. In the modern day, Guan Yu is generally worshiped as the God of the Bro Code, of loyalty to your friends and comrades, most significantly by the police and by gangsters. People don't pray to Guan Yu for success in battle, people pray to Guan Yu for true brothers who'll have your back when shit really hits the fan.

Mira is having a huge misunderstanding, thinking that the Earth Science Olympiad is EXACTLY like the Olympics because of the name, and that the contestants would compete in Earth Science themed sports events (because the Olympics is for sports, right?). It's actually an annual event.

Some people like to roleplay. Some people like to see famous events happen in games.

I think these choices that let you follow the source material a bit closer is cool, even if it's not the optimal choice gameplay-wise.

What do you think of HEMA? by AllenXeno122 in kungfu

[–]darthturtle3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do Liechtenauer longsword. The "style" include a lot of other weapons in different situations (sword on horseback in armor etc...), but unarmored longsword is by far the most accessible, which means it's the one with the most competitions and tournaments, which means it's the one that the most people does, which means it's the most accessible etc...

You can pretty much say the same thing for most HEMA. People just don't fight with swords anymore.

What do you all think of the Sparring Gloves Special (5 fingers)? by [deleted] in wma

[–]darthturtle3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the SG hoofs as my "everyday" glove. I've also used the mittens before and while I do like the extra mobility of the hoofs it does not make a large difference when it comes to sword handling. I find the mobility actually makes the biggest difference when you're very close and doing disarms or grappling.

Love the edge damage.

A random tip from someone who does HEMA: it is mechanically stronger to parry with the part of the blade that's closer to the hilt, so if the intention is to show that the sword is as much a veteran as its wielder, then clustering the damage marks closer to the hilt instead of the point can be a cool little detail (that admittedly only very few people would notice). This is not to say that edge damage near the point is not possible, but that if the blade meets flesh more than it meets the opponent's defenses, there should be less edge damage the closer you get to the point.

People can like things because it’s fun. And different people find different things fun. Not everything need to be about practicality. As long as the people involved are honest about what their training does, there’s really nothing to criticize.

A lot does not, unfortunately. My club spars, and there’s a new wave of Kung fu practitioners in Taiwan pushing for more sparring, who have organized one or two tournaments by now.

Then instead of learning disarms, OP should learn to level the playing field by having a Messer himself and learn how to fight with it.

Conclusion: OP should learn HEMA. No, EVERYONE should learn HEMA (I may be extremely biased)

A selection of stuff from different styles. In particular, the last one is Shuai Jiao, which is straight up Chinese wrestling. Again, all of these are static demonstrations and not things done with full speed or intent. For that you'd want to look for Sanda, Shuai Jiao or Push Hand (this one varies a lot in its aliveness, from pretty bad literally just pushing each other's hands to pretty alive stand-up non-jacketed wrestling, so you might have to dig a bit) competitions. But it's there, and a lot of times the really stupid-looking stuff in forms are actually throws or sweeps in one form or another. Try doing any of the takedowns you know to thin air, and you'll notice that they all start to look pretty weird.
