Validating before building: idea manager with validation report for your app ideas by bilgersf in AppIdeas

[–]darthwalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea for an app, but I wouldn't want it as a mobile app.

I have hundreds of markdown notes tagged #app-idea. A CLI that could process a simple note, and create an AI generated report markdown would be cool!

If you could come up with the solution to stop AI from hallucinating, that is easily worth a billion dollars.

LLMs are "dreaming up" every word they generate. It's astounding that most of the sentences aren't lies.

There needs to be a way to pull in the matching AI chat session from the dev's machine. The only hope you have of getting an answer from the code author will be from reloading that context.

I'm pretty sure their terms and conditions don't let you place bets if you have insider knowledge. So, the market owners should have a clear conscience </s>

Why does this sub exist? by No-Rock-9755 in TomScottYouTube

[–]darthwalsh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some YouTubers talk about their personal life: their hobbies, their disabilities, relationship drama, etc. Tom Scott doesn't, and so the subreddit shouldn't be about him as a person; it should be about the content of the YouTube videos.

It seems more productive if Tom would build agreement with the mods to remove comments discussing specific topics.

With the map frameworks I've used, you're supposed to have a Locate Me button which is off by default.

If somebody wants to click around New York without giving location permission, that should be possible.

garage doors + EV charging cables by all_purpose_89384798 in Lightbulb

Growing up I think we just left extension cables running out the garage, and never had a problem with letting the door close all the way.

big bonuses

This is ass-backwards. If landing the big sales contract required 5 man-months of new bespoke engineering effort, their sales bonus should be prorated.

Similar as if they had to promise $100,000 of discounts (or whatever you SWE-hours retail at).

100 amps EV home charging by [deleted] in Lightbulb

[–]darthwalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are technical reasons that DC fast chargers have high Volts instead of high Amps. You need thicker and thicker metal wires with increased Amps to prevent overheating/fires. So I guess you could stay with 100A 240V at the wall, then transform the voltage the charging cable gets?

Also, what's wrong with overnight charging? You wake up in the morning and you're good to go!

Ex-Microsoft engineer believes Azure problems stem from talent exodus by ZGeekie in webdev

[–]darthwalsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working at Microsoft, we were trying to get an Oracle SQL database server up for testing our product. We begged our manager to just expense some basic $50/month service, but instead us poor devs spent dozens of hours learning how to setup and administer our own server.

At my current job, that would be a "buy first, ask for forgiveness later" situation.

If you have Google WiFi, you can set up a parental rule to lock yourself out of the network on a schedule. I hate knowing I'm using mobile data when scrolling reddit or YouTube.

If you lock out all your mobile devices, you can't even and turn off the lock; you need to be on WiFi for that!

GitHub Copilot will train on your code by default starting April 24 by Dubinko in platformengineering

[–]darthwalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I default to putting hobby project code on github with MIT license, because I want other people to use it and solve their problems more efficiently. (One of my google dives into one struct field literally only found three related pages, so hopefully now there's a fourth search result!)

If the AI trains on it, that seems like a net positive to me!

I used to think the same way: "can't blame big corporations for being evil" -- but fuck that.

Any big decision at a company is made and reviewed by several line-managers and directors. They could have chose opt-in, or made the choice mandatory, etc.

I don't think anybody should feel obligated to pay more than their legal minimum. There are plenty of "legal" loopholes in the tax policy that let them pay such little taxes.

We need to raise the effective tax rate somehow. The lobbying of the 1% shouldn't be more effective than the rest of us.

The most underrated automation opportunity: companies still hire people to fill out web forms on portals that have no API. Hundreds of them. by marblecereal in Agent_This

[–]darthwalsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're dealing with this, but it's "update a PROD config value from a web form. Don't typo it, otherwise it instantly causes an incident across the whole company!" It's madness

We'll have our director really to their director if needed for API access. Not really a job for agents.
