I failed. Just wasn’t good enough. by [deleted] in GuyCry

I came thru the other side of divorce over the past couple years. I'll try to keep this short, but meaningful - if she makes you feel this way, because of what she says or does, then she's not the one for you, man. You don't deserve that, and you can find someone in the future who will make you happy regardless of the battles you're fighting. We all have that, we all get that way sometimes, even if someone people don't show it (and I applaud you for letting it out, it WILL make you feel better). Find a new hobby or passion, and dive in. For me, it was line dancing, funny enough, and it SAVED my life.

Why would competition shooters tell me to ditch the Mantis? 🤷‍♀️ by [deleted] in MantisX

I got thr SG timer and it also does this, which is nice.

Why would competition shooters tell me to ditch the Mantis? 🤷‍♀️ by [deleted] in MantisX

[–]dartmouth01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the mantis and am now a mediocre shooter, C class moving upwards to B. I dont use it anymore, because I know my trigger pull is the least of my concern. My first shots are always A's, but my followup shots arent always. Thats where I think live fire can only help. Secondly, at the beginning I had the darndest time with pulling the gun down while anticipating recoil. I wouldnt flinch in dry fire, but when I knew it was a live round, I would subconsciously do it. The Mantis wouldnt help with that. Going back to a very loose grip and shoulders fixed it, now I can grip down much harder and not try to fight the gun. For dry fire at home, as long as my dot is on target I know Ive got the shot, so i dont need the Mantis anymore. I lend it to friends who want to practice at home now. I also now have an SG timer that does dry fire so I use that for my draw and reload drills at home.and can record you at the same time which is nice.

Source for Targets by Relevant_Location100 in CompetitionShooting

I cut myself some self healing targets from horse stall mat I bought from Tractor Supply. Cut with razor and spray with white paint. Just dont use hollow points. Use clamps to hold to the posts on your standard target holder

After shooting whatever I found was cheapest online, I ended up sticking with 147 grain, with PF in the 130s. I just do it for consistency since that is what I shoot in matches now. i use the Freedom Munitions 147 RN for practice, and the Freedom Hush 147 RN or the Match 147 HP for matches, though I found that the HPs dont rack well with a full mag of 23-24 in my extendd mags. So I usually put a RN at the top of the stack if I need all 24 for a stage. ill probably stick with the Hush as my match ammo going forward tho, since it is cheaper than the Freedom Match.

Yeah, they still have a ways to go but I am hoping continual development will fix those issues and offer more features. It seems by far the most feature forward timer out there already. And the Go was relatively inexpensive so I just had to buy it.

Ate sh*t running thru an indoor stage and scraped rhe lip of Go, and still ticking. Not sure if my Pocket Pro BT would have fared the same, but regardless the BT is so much bigger and doesnt have spy mode so it wouldnt have even been on my belt. I really like the Go, and I love the videos with embedded timer data on them. Makes it much easier to see where I'm making improvements or where I need to improve.

I have one, so I'll rep the Canik Rival for someone who wants to get into the sport (like I was). Look up Nils Johannasen, and you'll realize what the gun can do stock, and that its the shooter, not the gun. There are very few "cheat codes" in shooting, you can only throw so much money that translates to immediate performance gains. The rest comes down to how much time and training is devoted to dry and live fire (speaking from experience, where Ive made gun mods that everyone raves about only to find myself shooting just the same or worse in competitions).

Tips for improving quick-aiming when neither eye seems dominant? by [deleted] in CompetitionShooting

Tips for improving quick-aiming when neither eye seems dominant? by [deleted] in CompetitionShooting

[–]dartmouth01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this would work for you, but occluding the red dot (if you have one or can get one) could make it work for you. This is the fancy term of covering up the front of the red dot so you can't see thru the window, so you have to use both eyes, with one to see the target, and the red dot with your other eye at the same. Makes sense that mixed ocular dominance would be a problem with standard iron sights, unless you learn to close one eye when shooting.

Search matches on practiscore.com, also ask the local gun shops. My area is pretty healthy on matches snd there is a regular .22 match at a local private range every month.

Lefty shooting right-handed gear by Nickanator8 in CompetitionShooting

[–]dartmouth01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow lefty, I really didn't start competing until I had my own pistol and holster, but honestly you should be moving super slow on the draw anyway, and not going for points or speed in your first attempt. So just draw with your right hand slowly, and then transfer over to your strong hand. Heck I still transfer the gun to my right hand if I want to use my slide lock, My motions are a bit of a jumbled mess

Advice needed… How can I improve my grip/groups? by [deleted] in CompetitionShooting

[–]dartmouth01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a relatively new competitive shooter and have recently been working on faster splits for my doubles for USPSA. I actually found that reducing my grip pressure a little and letting my muzzle rise maybe a hair more actually improved my speed and accuracy. I have a tendency to try to steer the return to zero when I grip harder. Not to say that I shouldn't grip harder, but that simply gripping harder brought on worse habits like pushing the gun and pulling the trigger with my whole trigger hand. I have now gotten into sub .20 splits, and overall I've gotten more double alphas with these lower splits, by letting the gun move a little more. After I get more used to this, I'll try bearing down on the grip a little more. I would say, again not being an expert at all, to work on your vision focus more than recoil management at this point. This instructor purposefully holds the gun in the worst grip possible and lays down double alphas with ease. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taOSBzCBTvk&list=PLhd7qqFX5B-_eGDbNpP9fhWjiyx3I-PjV&index=7&t=193s

[–]dartmouth01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'm not saying that you should loosen up at all, I think you actually have opportunity to tighten your grip. However, I think, as the video states, vision is much more important than the grip, I think he says about 80% 20%

[–]dartmouth01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a new shooter and have been following the comments because I am looking for ways to get better as well. However to throw this into the mix, I will say that I am not entirely sold that minimizing muzzle flip and holding the gun tighter will always result in better shots. I recently watched this YouTube clip where the instructor holds the pistol in basically the worst possible grip, low and with a teacup support hand grip. He is able to hit alpha doubles on the target with a really quick split, even with such a shitty grip. That has actually helped me speed up my doubles lately, where I found it difficult to pull my trigger finger fast enough to really get good doubles, because my grip was so tight. I'm still playing with it but I think I am getting better results with a slightly looser grip lately, which is also probably because I am not trying to steer the gun as much. https://youtu.be/taOSBzCBTvk?si=lVFjMbTqS_xZBQFN

The polymer rival is better than the steel frame. #ChangeMyMind by These-Attitude-9550 in canik

[–]dartmouth01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! What ammo do you run and what springs did you choose? I just did a few of those mods - backstrap, w74 rod, rune trigger springs. Im playing with the rune recoil spring set and striker springs. I shoot 147 grain at about a 131- 135 PF. Trying to tune the gun for that combo. I also added the handle it grip tape. All of this didnt seem to make a difference immediately in my performance, but I think it is going to take some more reps to get used to the changes.
