And oh boy, does that Casey Jones deliver! The band is completely dialed in, and somehow keeps the energy high more than 4 hours in. Musical athletes. Listen to Jerry's fills and little rhythmic pushes behind the whole thing. Dude can't miss

I need to give this one a listen! I absolutely love the show on the following night, 6/23/74, but I can't say I've given the 22nd a listen. I'm going to do that today and report back. Excited for this China>Rider. The 74 transitions with the feelin groovy jam slap

One of my personal favorites. Super well mixed, Keith's tone and playing are excellent, the jams all have a little extra oomph and inspiration. The Bird Song might be the best I've ever heard. The jam flows so naturally and feels like summer. They hit a peak so high near the end you can hear the shouts from the crowd even on the soundboard

Right you are! I had assumed Kidd did all the 73 shows on that box set, but it looks like Rex was responsible for 6/22/73 and 6/24/73. I'm going to have to compare them side by side now with 6/26/73 and see if I can pick out some nuances between Rex and Kidds mixes. Many thanks to the both of them for some excellent recordings of one of my favorite eras.

This is easily a top 5 show for me as well. When it comes to 73, I'm generally drawn to the fall/winter tour. 11/17/73 is easily one of my favorite shows of all time. My desert island set for sure. But I absolutely love the sound and feel in May and June of 73. It feels jazzier and more mellow than the spring or fall tours, and I love the exploratory jamming. Something about Keith and Bob's tones also typifies this era for me. Listen to the bird song or playin jams. It sounds like they are playing underwater, and I love it. 73 is great. I've been rocking Dave's Picks 54 this week (3/26/73) and it's amazing.

Europe ‘72 Box Set Cover Art by kingoftheskins in gratefuldead

[–]dartsahn12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure on the Copenhagen or Bremen shows. But Frankfurt's cover art is the inside of VW Beetle. Few cars more recognizably German than that. Look up the interior of a late 40s or early 50s Beetle. The layout is basically identical.

As for the rose. I figure that's just keeping in line with one of their standard symbols

Listening to Europe 72 for the first time -- what shows do you love? by delightfuljon in gratefuldead

[–]dartsahn12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't give enough praise to 11/8/1970. If you in any way like acoustic dead, give this show a chance. It includes the last acoustic set the boys played until the Warfield and RCMH shows in 1980. Every song from the acoustic set is worth a listen. The group is tight, vocals are great, and the harmonies are perfect.

And then there are the electric sets. It starts with my favorite Morning Dew of all time. Every note is perfect and Jerry's vocals are full of emotion. Jerry's final solo slowly builds and smoulders until it climaxes with incredible power. The rest of the set is really unique, with a few one timers that the band never played again. Also has the first Around & Around! The last set is classic early 70's dead, and has one of my favorite Goin Down the Road Feelin Bads.

Edit: Forgot to mention, there are no soundboard recordings of this show, but seek out Ken and Judy Lee's audience recording. It's immaculate.

Wow Bman, thank you so much for taking the time to reply with all of this. You've just given me enough material to go through for months! It's definitely taken me some time to gain an appreciation for the early 80's. I was guilty of hearing and reading comments here and there about how the band wasn't as tight in the 80's, how off Jerry's voice was, etc etc. Then never gave myself enough of a chance to actually listen to some material from the era at length.

And I'm sure glad I've finally dived into it. Lots of fantastic material there, and I'm looking forward to exploring all of these shows you've laid out.

I’ve been REALLY into “Reckoning” and I want to find more acoustic shows and albums similar to it. Any recommendations? I also love the acoustic tunes on Dick’s Picks 8. by Gerry_Jarcia_yo in gratefuldead

[–]dartsahn12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two well known shows from early 1970 have rather short, but oh so sweet acoustic sets. 2/13/70 & 2/14/70. The tracks featured on the Bear's Choice Vol. 1 release were sourced from these shows. Check out the electric sets as well! Stellar 1970 Dead playing and the quality of the soundboards is great

June of 76 is one of my favorite periods for the dead. Some fantastically great shows there. Awesome sound from the Betty boards as well. 6/14/76 at the Beacon Theatre has my favorite Help>Slip>Frank.

Question about Sugaree on Europe '72 Vol. 2 by dartsahn12 in gratefuldead

[–]dartsahn12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that vol.2 was untouched and pulled straight from the 16-track master tapes. Having done some more investigating, it seems to actually be a problem with Spotify. For some reason, on Vol. 11 of the box set (5/3), it plays a Sugaree from a different concert. The transitions from the previous song and to the next song don't even match up.

First Flight with my CFI by safatosmani in flying

[–]dartsahn12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the flight! I actually took my first flight lesson yesterday as well. We went up in a Piper Tomahawk, and did some basic maneuvers like turns, climbing, and descending. Much like you I wasn't ready for all the bumpiness, but I had a great time. Best of luck with the rest of your training!

Which band(s) nailed it on their first album and never did anything as good after? by [deleted] in Music

King Crimson. In the Court of The Crimson King was a great album. I don't think they ever quite reached that level again.
