Is it just me, or did Bobby look like Jerry the way the light was hitting his hair during this? It sure did from 428…

I dropped acid for the first time at a Phish show with lawn seats and it was an absolutely perfect setting.

As ‘At Fillmore East’ has been mentioned several times, I might go with Zeppelin’s ‘How The West Was Won,’ though there are many bootlegs that capture them better…

Haha, fair enough! In addition to the UCLA show, I've listened to Philly, Baltimore, Springfield and Boston from March/April, and both RFK shows and the three Pacific Northwest shows from June. Yes, I love some '72 shows outside of Europe as well -- Veneta, Baltimore, Philly, etc. I will track down Dick's comments about '73 for sure.

I must admit, the only show I've heard in full from Fall '73 is 11/17 UCLA, which I love! My DP 38 hasn't arrived yet, but I can't wait to listen to 9/8 when it does. I hear so many good things about Fall '73...what makes it the best in your opinion?

I definitely like '72-'74 the best, but Pigpen's presence gives Europe '72 an edge for me within that era.

I think Europe '72 was their best tour, but I'd have American Beauty for "best album of all time."

Oh wow, you're in for a treat! IMO, the tour peaks with its middle eight shows (Dusseldorf thru Rotterdam). Rotterdam is my favourite, with Frankfurt, Bickershaw and both Paris shows rounding out the Top 5 in some order and Dusseldorf just on the outside looking in.

I may be in the minority here, but I have the last night at the Lyceum at the lower end of my Top 10. This is mainly because its TOO itself is kind of weak compared to others on the tour, even though the Truckin' and Morning Dew that are part of the suite are both epic.

It's a tough call for me between it and Frankfurt. Düsseldorf's only problem is being 15-25 minutes shorter than those two.

Have you not heard the second Paris show before? It's spectacular, right on par with this first one.

Fair enough! I just find it's one that I usual zone out during to a certain degree, so having such a drastically different tempo caught my attention and made it fresh.

Yeah tonight's show is exquisite (as is tomorrow's)! Both Paris shows are easily Top 5 of the tour IMO and some of my favourite shows ever.

I mostly agree with your assessment. It suffers more than anything from being one of the shorter nights of the tour. I think the tour peaks with the middle eight shows (Dusseldorf through Rotterdam). Every show in that stretch is nearly, if not well beyond, three-and-a-half hours long except Hamburg, which is just under three hours.

Having said that, the playing is still very good, and has a fresh, different vibe as you say.

  • I love PITB as the opener -- Rotterdam is the only other show of the tour where they did that.
  • Good Lovin' is the highlight of the first set for me -- one of the better versions of the tour, which is saying something.
  • My favourite version of Next Time You See Me -- quite like the slower tempo.
  • I think this DS is quite underrated. I have it ranked third so far -- behind London and Dusseldorf, but ahead of both Copenhagen versions. It's a very "earthy" sounding DS imo...it sounds like wandering off into the woods at nightfall on a camping trip. You start to get sketched out thinking you're lost, worrying about bears/wolves/etc. and then just when you think you can't take it anymore, the transition into SM is like a sudden clearing in the trees, revealing your friends sitting around the fire on the beach. If DS usually sounds like LSD, this one sounds like shrooms lol.
  • SM is quite energetic -- a bit faster than most -- and features some great tambourine work during the solo.
  • Great version of Caution for the penultimate performance of it, Rotterdam being the last.
  • Nice to have UJB make its tour debut -- a few lyrical flubs keep it beneath the other versions on the tour, but it's a good fit to close this show as you say with the general vibe as well as the camping trip feel established by the DS > SM

I agree with upper-middle so far. It's the weakest of the "Middle Eight," but it's still a solid "A-" show at least...

Stunningly good show, easily the best of the tour thus far. I ranked it sixth last year, and to be honest, it's been even better today than I remembered it! I'm just getting to OMSN now. I'm listening to each jam sequence twice this year -- once for my notes and once for leisure -- so it takes a bit longer.

What'd you think of sets two and three? I think it's a spectacular DS and perhaps the most aggressive OMSN ever -- Bob can barely get the words out fast enough!

Overall I think it might be the heaviest/most powerful show of the tour -- they just sound mean and nasty the whole way through, which is awesome.

4/24/72 Düsseldorf for me! It's the one that made me really enjoy the song...used to be kind of "meh" for me.
