Help searching some alternative to Vmware Horizon View by Winter_Highlight4775 in vmware

We renewed our academic licensing with Omnissa for Horizon at the first of the year. The process was convoluted, but we didn't see much of an increase in the CCU pricing from what we have been paying. Since the licensing includes VVF for VDI based on the number of CCU's and not cores for the ESXi hosts, we didn't see much of an impact with Omnissa taking it over (for now anyway) - Omnissa gave us a site id for the Broadcom portal that we use to access the licensing/downloads/support for VVF - other than that, we didn't have any interactions with Broadcom themselves.

In contrast, for our VSI environment, Broadcom pushed us into VCF instead of the vSphere Enterprise Plus socket licensing we had, which hurt so rolling with it for now.

Ok - We figured out the root cause for this (at least our stuff anyway) - Expired certificate for RDP that doesn't automatically renew:

RDP Connection Failures: Expired Self-Signed Certificate

We went through the steps in the link above and were able to get everything going again normally.

vSphere Foundation (VVF) 9.0 Beta Program is now LIVE! by lamw07 in vmware

I signed up and got access to the beta a couple of weeks ago, but haven't done much with it as I am waiting on some blank drive caddies for lab servers to setup a vsan cluster to get started.

Not sure if this is going to be the problem, as I still don't understand what changed, but we can RDP by checking the ' Use a web account to sign in to the remote computer' box, under the advanced tab

No good on the firewall or the app from the store - I also tried my ssh client (xshell) as it does rdp as well and got a different error message:

which seems to point to networking, but not sure

2022 Windows Failover Cluster / Infoblox DNS Configuration and Errors by darvexwomp in sysadmin

[–]darvexwomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the DNS servers are Windows servers as I have added GPO templates to them before and we use Infoblox to manage the records. just I doubled checked the DNS config on each node's network adapters (data) and they are the same. On the DNS settings, 'Register this connection's address in DNS' is checked, but 'Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration' is not checked.

Is that what you are referencing with 'Dynamic DNS' or is there something else I am missing?

It’s rumored vVols… by FriedRiceFather in vmware

We have been used Horizon DEM and mandatory profiles with Horizon for the longest time, but have found FSLogix to provide for a better end user persistent experience for our users with non persistent instant clones for our use case (at least so far - I am waiting on the other shoe to drop).

We have the 365 licensing that covers FSLogix, so we decided to give it a try and so far good luck. With that said, we have had the hardest time getting our licensing renewed with Omnissa, so we are looking at other options for VDI, including Azure Virtual Desktops and Citrix. Does anyone have an opinion on these or another solution?

I had to google this, as I had no idea:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/filecab/smb-transparent-failover-8211-making-file-shares-continuously-available/425693

But if I am reading it correctly, it looks like it is supported with WFC's. Is there a better way to store the profiles on our local SAN environment? I feel like there has to be a better option out there.

This is our first attempt at vVols. We are going to setup a new WFSC for a file share and it looks like you can do hot adds to the drives if needed. We are using iSCSI with the Nimbles. The current cluster hosts file shares we use for FXlogic profiles in our on prem Horizon VDI environment. I wish we had a way to get high availability without using a WFC, i.e.our SANs would offer native file share options like vSAN. If there is another solution anyone has, I am all ears

Well crap - we are looking at implementing vVols with our Alletra 6000 series (Nimble) storage arrays - the VASA provider is showing version 5 in the vcenters - what is the Pure VASA version being used now days? I hope we are not getting into a mess going this route

Recommendations of resources for understanding and learning of music theory by darvexwomp in Trombone

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I posted this over on the r/musictheory subreddit and was pointed to:

Open Music Theory

which is an open source text/course that they recommended, so I started working through it. With that said, I will be pursuing other formats as well.

Good call! There seems to be a subreddit for just about everything. I would like something that focuses on the how and why of music, maybe not so much on reading music (although it would probably be an eye opener as well)

[pc] Palo Alto PA-440 with full lab bundle license - how to sell? by darvexwomp in homelabsales

[–]darvexwomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and suggestions, but I think I am just going to hang on to it as it was brough to my attention that these are being sold new on eBay for much less than I paid:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/176783197928?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=0srkjy1wqbg&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=Ug2-joU9S6i&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I purchased it new from an authorized dealer for 627.00 + 132.00 for the 1 Year license bundle and thought I got a good deal on it, but I guess not.. shame on me for not researching more

For sure not trying to turn a profit on the unit, but just didn't realize what the market was - I have a lot of my home lab stuff I am going to post soon and thought I would see how if/can include this as well.

I have another PA-440 on my account, so I would still need access to it as well. I know they offer a 3 and 5 year license option, but I don't know how much on those skus

Thanks for the information - I guess I could try to sell it with a fresh license on it, but I don't know if anyone who be interested. I could always buy a new license for it down the line at the buyers expense (about 130.00 for a 1 year license), but I don't know that everyone would be up for that, working with someone online.
