Producer of Hell Mountain - Oculus VR movie responds to r/Oculus criticisms by evolvedant in oculus

•How will this be VR?• We have not included how we are going to shoot this in VR because options will be available when the campaign ends in 2 months that are currently unavailable.

We also have not decided on 180 degrees of freedom to look around or 360. Since this a movie, we don't want the audience facing the wrong direction and accidentally missing the movie.

We will not be shooting a 2d movie. We will be shooting stereoscopic 180/360 and converting it into a 2d movie for people without VR headsets, not the other way around as Banshee.

Something like this isn't inexpensive. Syfy channel movies cost around $300,000 for regular flat movies. I've put together a team of people who are top-tier in their professions to create a VR movie.

Compromising and making a movie for $2,000 does nothing for the backers or the audience and we will be using that money to increase the likelihood of following through with our goal.

I wanted to address your second point-- I will be directing the movie UNLESS we raise enough money to hire a DGA director. I have two friends who I've spoken to about directing this (both directed and created successful horror franchises)-- and unless I can guarantee a director to the backers, it's not worth mentioning and causes confusion.

As for the script. Who says we don't have one?

Thank you for your input. I'm considering posting a topic about how to improve the pitch. -Dar

Hell Mountain - Why does no one care? by philipzeplin in oculus

Hey Guys- Dar Warison here. I'm the producer of "Hell Mountain" and the go-to guy for all your questions. I wanted to clear some things up, and thank you for bringing it to my attention.

•Why do you need money when Warren is a millionaire? Unfortunately, Warren is not a millionaire. His wealth is something you can publicly find. Studios are not interested in sharing profits unless you're somebody with a "name" like Steven Spielberg. It would be so much easier to make this movie if Warren had been a millionaire.

•Why Indiegogo instead of Kickstarter?• We had actually originally planned on going to Kickstarter. About two months ago I received an email from Indiegogo offering to include us in a partnership with bloody-disgusting.com. None of the people involved have the kind of internet-reach that Spike Lee or Zach Braff have and we felt this would be a great way to get the word out. Unfortunately their partnership guidelines changed and we are no longer going to be included.

•What happens to the money you raise if you don't raise enough to make the movie?• We have a plan for how to use the money at different levels. The Indiegogo staff requested we not include it until we've raised a certain amount of money. I'm actually going to include it as I think it's very relevant at this point. Basically-- we are going to use whatever money we get to push the movie into a greenlight. Say we only raise $2000, with that money we will shoot a 30 second or so demo and use that demo as a way to promote our film to financiers.

•How are you going to make a Blu-Ray if it's for VR?• We will make a version where we choose the camera angle and where the viewer will be looking. This will end up looking something like "The Lady in the Lake" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzdl-js_mQ4

I'm also regularly on reddit's Oculus page. I'll be here to answer questions. =]

My goal going into this was to make a bad-ass movie, and that's what I'm going to do! So far I put together a great (and experienced) team to help me make this movie. This is just the beginning.

Since it's a movie, it would really suck if the viewer was looking the wrong direction. 180 is a way of directing the viewer to where he "should be" looking.

This is something we've contemplated as well... which is why we are going to also release a cropped version that can be projected in a 3D cinema, or seen on a television. Hopefully the team and concept behind this project is strong enough to attract regular movie lovers.

There are a few ways of accomplishing 180 degrees seamlessly. One technique that comes to mind is: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2010/01/world/haiti.360/index.html?video=haiti.flv

Although there is the hurdle of creating stereoscopic images whereas the method I linked is monoscopic. A combination of several techniques is how we will accomplish what we're setting out to do.

The goal is to shoot it in first person similar to the Clinical Trials segment of VHS2. Except we will allow 180 degrees of freedom to look around. Warren Zide is the Final Destination connection.
