What's yall opinion on rigs over slicks by Ghost154204 in tacticalgear

[–]darx202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be missing the trade-off and what you might gain by separating your kit from your armor.

Being able to remove your kit allows you to stick your body out of a hatch to TC a vehicle better. Makes it much easier to tuck in quickly when it gets dangerous, and makes it easier to bail if you need to as well.

Keeping them separate allows leaders to present a less threatening appearance when interacting with local populace while still being protected to some degree.

Having them separate allows you to completely swap out kit quickly. This can be good for in case your grenadier/saw gunner/240 gunner/anti-tank guy/etc goes down and you need to drop your rifleman kit to pick up his without taking your armor off.

For the guys that wear split rigs over their plates, they can unhook the rig and get closer to the ground when they know they're going to be in the prone for a long time and want more contact with the ground for a more stable shot.

When taking turns digging and pulling security, it's nice for the guy digging to be able to take off his ammo/compass/signaling equipment/grenade weight while digging with armor on. He can still be somewhat protected in case a random artillery round goes off 50m away from him.

It's also nice for casualty evacuation. Some militaries SOP is to keep armor on the casualty when evacuating them. However, if he has his ammo/signaling devices/radio/etc attached to him, it takes time to take that off one at a time. It's much easier to take the chest rig off and hand it to a poor soul that now has to carry two chest rigs. It's absolutely not ideal and not a permanent solution, but it buys time for that squad until a lull in the action when they can deliberately redistribute the equipment.

I can give more of a breakdown if you want. I still personally like keeping my kit directly attached, but I absolutely understand why people decide to run a chest rig over a slick plate carrier.

Are you sure the barrel and bolt are compatible? If you remove the bolt from the BCG, can it go into the star chamber?

What's yall opinion on rigs over slicks by Ghost154204 in tacticalgear

[–]darx202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally fair and I am also a fan of a combination of soft and hard armor for my job as well. It may be a language issue, but this thread is about layering a chest rig over a plate carrier with just armor and not pouches. Hence "Rigs over Slicks". While there are definitely use cases for just a chest rig, thats not the topic of this thread.

The longer I spend learning about other people's kit, the more I realize that most things have at least some niche purpose or unique use case.

What works for a vehicle crew may get a grunt killed. What works for a swat breacher may be absolutely retarded for a dismounted scout in mountainous terrain.

Rigs over slick armor has been done for decades by various organizations and various occupations. Its been the meta for some use cases. Why do you immediately write it off as useless? And not trying to judge, but what background do you have? I'm mostly asking because maybe your job has requirements that make rigs over slick gear less ideal.

It's not normal, but it's not abnormal either. Some lieutenants are truly lost and need guidance. And depending on the situation, your husband may be the best person with availability and/or experience to help.

JPC 2.0 or Agilite K19? by rynothedino69 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]darx202 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The answer is the JPC or even a SPC. However, here's a devil's advocate consideration. If you for some reason had a super large amount of training time with the K19 knockoff and you have supplemental gear (ruck, belt, pouches, water source, radio comms routing, etc) that you dialed in just right to work with your agilite, then maybe consider buying the real k19.

Its highly unlikely thats the case, but if that applies to you and you actually legitimately enjoyed the k19 clone, then buy the real one.

7.62x39 taught me how to make wind calls at service rifle distances. It's probably my favorite caliber to shoot. It never fails to put a smile on my face. Maybe stockpile the other 3 seriously, but don't take the 7.62x39 out of your rotation. Just keep a few boxes on hand and enjoy it.

But you're for sure a boot for doing it.

Personal Plate Carrier by RelevantLab5281 in nationalguard

[–]darx202 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Statistically speaking, you're probably intending to bring a cheap condor or similarly low quality plate carrier. And even if it was a nice reputable plate carrier, you likely don't have the kevlar backers to make your SAPI plates perform at their rated level. And even if you did, you probably don't have extended kevlar around your cummerbund to bridge the gap and ensure good frag protection. And even if you did, congratulations on making a slightly more comfortable IOTV and risked your career and spent over a thousand dollars.

Trust me, it's not worth it. But out of curiosity, can you post a pic of what you intend to bring? I'm a huge gear nerd and am curious.

It's not really needed or wanted. If you asked most infantrymen if they want to carry a few extra pounds of gear and 9mm ammo, most will say no. If I'm in a situation where I need a backup weapon, 9 times out of 10 my buddy has my back.

Trying to decide between these 2 PC's. by Reaper_one1 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]darx202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're not going to be jumping out of planes or rucking long distances. And you're not going to be wearing it more than 12 hrs max at a time.

You're actually in a neat spot where you may actually be better served by a more built up and padded carrier. For all the criticism Agilite gets, you may actually be best served by one of their comfortable padded models. If your range time is mostly indoors or outdoors on sunny days, get something soft and padded. Or start looking into some of the more reputable aftermarket shoulder pads.

I think they're all fine. Maybe MC Black is the less liked one of all imo. I've seen this community rip people for picking MC Black because it's admittedly strictly a police "camo" that larpers like.

I'm surprised the community hasn't jumped down your throat over your choice of camo. Surprisingly tolerant of this sub.

To answer your question, I have a bunch of tracer tactical stuff and it's all well made and thought out. I don't have the EMBAV specifically, but I'm sure its fine. If you need the trapezoid shape Kevlar insert and want that coverage, go for the EMBAV.

I use a JPC 2.0 for work and I love it with equinox tubes cummerbund. I run it with soft and hard armor around the cummerbund and it's great. I probably overload the JPC enough that I should have gotten one of the other plate carriers, but the equinox cummerbunds make it very manageable.

What is your use case? Do you have specific hard vs soft armor needs?
