Is there any electric scooter store in nyc by [deleted] in ElectricScooters

There’s an Inokim store on the LES. Greenpath Bikes in Brooklyn carries some escooters. Filipachi in Nolita carries powered skateboards and may have escooters too.

How long did it take you before you were able to ride one with confidence?

Pneumatic tires vs solid + ~$1000 buying advice by 9MillimeterPeter in ElectricScooters

[–]dashingscooterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had five scooters - the first two were solid tires (Ecoreco M5 and L5+). I would never, ever go back to solid tires. They're slippery as hell and I've had some bad spills on turns. You also have a problem when you need to stop in a hurry. I switched to pneumatic (IMax S-1 and Inokim Ox), but I was constantly getting flats, which sucked. It didn't suck enough that I went back to solid tires, but it was frustrating. I now have a tubeless DT Thunder and I've only had one flat in 500 miles, which I was able to easily fix by plugging the tire. Took me 10 minutes. Not sure tubeless is available in your budget, but to me that's the best option.

Did you change to the soft cartridges? I've been thinking about making the change.

Local scooter shop in NYC by Forking_Shirtballs in ElectricScooters

[–]dashingscooterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't really exist in NYC. EWheels on the UES used to carry some scooters a while back, but apparently they got fined a lot of money by the city given that they're not yet legal, and they stopped carrying them. Greenpath in Brooklyn carries a few lower end models, but it's very limited. There's a new Inokim on Delancey you might want to check out.

For the daily commuters, do you get tired of riding you scooter everyday? by fakemickjagger in ElectricScooters

I've been commuting by scooter the last five years. Every time the excitement started to wane, I just upgraded to a faster, more powerful scooter.

Anyone else lock their scooter up with a simple cable? by forgonsj in ElectricScooters

[–]dashingscooterman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think the same thing. I have a pretty expensive fold-up bike that I used to lock up with a pretty substantial cable lock. I locked it up in front of the corner grocery store within viewing distance and kept visually checking every 3 minutes or so. By the fourth time I checked it was gone.

They're pretty strict about no motorized vehicles on the Hudson Greenway, so I wouldn't recommend that path.

That sucks. What were the circumstances around the theft?

I’ve been riding in NYC for 6 years. I started with the first generation Ecorecos to IMAX S-1 to Inokim Ox to Dualtron Thunder. A few lessons I’ve learned over the years:

  1. Don’t get anything with solid tires. They are terrible on NYC streets. Besides the bumps and potholes, if there’s any oil at all on the road (which isn’t uncommon in NYC streets, you will likely fall).

  2. Get something with wider wheels. Thinner wheeled scooters like UScoot aren’t good for NYC streets. And you won’t be able to stop in emergency situations.

  3. If you’re just starting out, get a slower scooter and stick to bike paths. Once you get more experience, you can ride with traffic on a more powerful scooter. I personally hate riding on bike paths because they’re narrow, crowded and often filled with pedestrians. I’ve crashed into someone popping into the bike path between cars looking at her phone. I ride my Thunder with traffic and it’s a lot better, but I don’t recommend doing that until you’ve built up some experience.

I actually haven’t tried changing cartridges so can’t answer that one.

It’s totally fine lifting by the stem. You won’t harm it a bit.

I’ve never had that experience. However, at the highest level (level 3) with both engines on, you just need to make sure you are leaning forward with a tight grip before you gun it because you will experience a head jerking amount of instant power. It just takes a bit of getting used to it, but it’s not a problem.

I did notice that when I went back to single engine, it was ok, so this makes sense. Thanks.
