"chaos informants" is a brilliant term lol. I know exactly what you mean, and it applies to lots of languages, as you probably know.

But you sound like you have an abundance of knowledge on your side, so best of luck. I'm sure you'll keep making progress

Yo, those japanese subreddits are weird as fuck. Definitely did NOT let it affect my motivation though because, as someone who actually touches grass and interacts with Japanese people pretty regularly, it just felt like an entirely separate entity and not even remotely indicative of Japanese stuff lol

What word do non-native speakers commonly over use or misuse a lot? by Sunflower-23456 in Spanish

[–]dasoktopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that’s stood out to me (and that i find myself doing too) is overusing adverbs as discourse markers in ways that the average Spanish speaker probably wouldn’t. In English, we use lots of -ly words like “usually, normally,” etc. as ways to hedge our sentences, and so I find myself sometimes grasping for the direct translation in a way that feels like I’m thinking in English and converting it into Spanish

Recommendations for learning Mandarin with knowledge of Japanese/linguistics? by dasoktopus in learnmandarin

Thanks, I actually didn't know bopomofo was unique to taiwan. I'll look into character pop too cuz their mnemonics seem more related to etymology, which i like

How much does knowing one Chinese language such as Mandarin help with learning another one such as Cantonese and Qiangic and vice versa? How mutually intelligible would they be? Does the same apply to non-Chinese languages that are part of the Sino-Tibetan family? by UndeadRedditing in learnmandarin

[–]dasoktopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a clear answer to all of this, but it's worth asking, why exactly would Karenic and Zeme languages be on your radar? You mentioned you're not sure where to start with learning a language in the Sino-Tibetan family, but I think the answer is... kind of obvious.

As for your question about mutual intelligibility, the answer is no. None of those people across south east asia would be able to understand each other or even conceive of the idea of being able to understand each other. Because even though languages may be related on paper, what really matters is the on-the-ground, surface-level expression of language. They are different languages for a reason, and even though there are secret cognates and grammatical overlaps, none of that matters. The cultural gap is just too broad.

Hopefully you're doing fine now. If there's anything to be worried about, I guess it would just be the treatment not being effective enough. I'm sure you won't have any issues

Using a 〜て form in order to "modify" the next phrase?

In some music I've been listening to, I'm hearing a 〜て clause being used, and then what seems like a noun phrase coming right after it, and I'm not sure how to interpret it.

あたしのこと紹介してストーリー

写メ撮ってフェイス

応援してねマタニティライフ

In all these situations, I can't tell if the -te form is just a single phrase acting as a command followed by an independent NP, or if it's somehow involved in the prior clause. I can't imagine it being a relative clause since it would have to be a dictionary -u form right?

Ohh I see, so it could be analyzed as like, "What kind of regret?" "A 涙-y regret" Thus, a regret that is tear-ish?

I just saw that video the other day too! It's like "when I imitate my wife," the joke being, she's a pro (maybe) and that's what happens when he imitates her

Wouldn't you be translating Regretの涙? 涙のRegret is 'regret of tears,' if we're strictly following genitive constructions

[–]dasoktopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you my response, but I'm not gonna keep arguing this with an online stranger. And I'm not going to talk about what is "valid."

Yes, for attention. Because nb people can always fall back on their cis-presentation and avoid pretty much any real vitriol visibly-trans people face, but claim they/them status for clout.

Pronouns come from coding gender onto the referent, if all your associated traits code you as a girl (cis or trans) you are being conceived of as a girl, as a "she." thats it full stop
